This was a nightmare.

A complete and utter disaster. Bri had known that tryouts would be rough, but this was far beyond even her low expectations. Bri grit her teeth as Franky smeared on her black lipstick. Leaning back in the chair she crossed her arms and thought back over the tryouts so far.

Kara and Abby were decent. That is, if they could land a jump or two. She tried not to hold it against them too much as she remembered trying out for Seacliff and being so terrified she just dropped her biggest stunt from her routine. Besides they were better than half the girls on last year's squad.

Matt certainly had the enthusiasm needed for the job, and wasn't a half bad dancer. But why did he have to look like that? Bri supposed that at this freak school you took what looks you could get. At least he had some talent.

Then there was Elly and Thorn. No. Way. In. Hell. Elly looked more like she was auditioning for the local strip club. She had no stunts and barely any cheer moves. Bri took a small bit of consolation knowing that the juvie reject was not getting a place on this squad if she had any say.

Thorn was even worse. Even the untrained eye could tell the only reason Thorn was able to pull any of the those stunts was because of his wings. Which he wouldn't be able to use on the field. At all. Forget the thorn confetti. Inability to do stunts or cheer without the use of powers was the biggest strike against him. Bri smirked in her chair, knowing he had shot himself in the foot by trying to impress the judges.

When Franky called Roo up, Bri breathed a sigh of relief. Finally someone who knew what they were doing and had already impressed her time and again. She smiled genuinely brightly at Roo as he walked up and held out her hand for his music.

"Hang on!"

As if the sight of the five-foot-tall Jade Rooster towering over the gymnasium at the top of the bleachers wasn't absurd enough, it was immediately obvious why his typical shouts of encouragement had been absent for the majority of the try-out - he had apparently spent the time stripping away his school uniform. His shoes and tie had found a resting place on the glossy wooden bench beside him, and one foot was sticking straight up into the air as he tugged at a sock. A few more awkward moments of disrobing left him in his shirt, slacks and trademark grin.

Anticipation and adrenaline shot through his system, giving him an energetic bounce in his step as he made his way down the tiered steps and over to the table with CD in hand. Paired with his overwhelming confidence, he could have easily come off as arrogant to anyone who didn't know better. He leaned forward to give the disc to Brianna with one hand and remove his glasses with the other, placing the latter on the table with care. "I think it's track one," he murmured, "But I never made one of these before."

Roo made his way to the floor and settled at a midpoint, allowing himself a slowly-drawn breath to settle his nerves and focus. The music kicked in suddenly with its well-known opening melody - "Jerk It Out" by the Caesars - but the boy remained motionless until several bars of the song had passed. Right on cue, however, his face lit up into the fake smile typical of a cheerleader and his body sprung into motion.

He lacked any real dancing talent and he wasn't strong enough to lift some of the taller girls, but he could tumble with the best of them, and it was obvious as he began to flip and cartwheel to the rhythm that he was pushing his acrobatic skill as his selling point. This routine more closely resembled a legitimate gymnastic cheer sequence than his wushu-set-to-music from the prior year, though the occasional kick or twirl still smacked of martial technique.

The song reached a bridge point and the lyrics died down, allowing Rooster to plant his feet and bellow a cheer at the "audience" in front of him. His hands darted in traditional cheerleading gestures, clapping and spelling out letters with his arms as he poured almost humorous levels of enthusiasm into each syllable.

"Explode! Ignite! SJS is dynamite!
"We're blue and white! Let's go, Flyers! Fight, fight, fight!"

One last reprise in his background music provided Roo adequate time for a few more dramatic spins and leaps, but the end of the song didn't mark any particularly remarkable flourish. Taking a moment to catch his breath, he spun on his heel to flash a bright smile and a thumbs-up at Franky and Bri before trotting his way back up the bleachers to his previous perch.
"This is ten percent luck, twenty percent skill
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will
Five percent pleasure, fifty percent pain
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name"

Leave it to Rooster to make an appearance. At least this year he didn't almost end up almost jack-knifing off the basketball hoop thanks to Eric's caffeinated speed boost capabilities.

Franky made one more pass over the clipboard, tapping her pen down the list.

"Ok, any last minute entries before I close try-outs?"

She glanced around the gym and then cautiously at the doors.

"It happens every year and let's face it, my luck just isn't that good."

She waited for a minute or two.

((If anyone wants to jump in for a last minute try-out, feel free to come crashing through the gym doors. If not, I will leave this thread open for a few more days before I close it as Franky and Bri fight out this year's roster. Cheers.))

Valerie walked into the gym, wearing baggy sweat-pants and a loose-fitting tank-top. She was extremely confidant, she's been working out for months and she thinks that'll help.

She looked around at the kids on the bleachers, and blushed. Was she late?
She walked up to the judge's table nervously, and kinda-whispered to Franky.

"Uh, am I late? I am so sorry!"

Franky just waved at her, told her to give her the music and get to work.

"Oh! Thanks, so much!", Val said excitedly and handed her a CD.

Valerie took position centered at the judge's table, and began in a stance with her legs bent and her arms down.

As the opening guitar licks to "Here I Go Again" by OK Go started, Val pumped her arms and lifted her knees to the rythmn. As the guitar parts twanged, she jumped straight into the air and touched her out-stretched feet. As the song went by, Val provided many tricks as she cheered to the rythmn. After the end of the first chorus, Val did a neatly-done front flip. She repeated much of her last performance for this verse, but did it with much more energy. As the guitar solo started, she started to go crazy. She jumped and thrusted her arms ferociously. As it ended, Val showed off her splits. She repeated her mock-walking a bit more until the outro started. There, she did some more fancy jumps and frontflips, and ended by sliding on her knees.

She got up, panting, and sat down next to Mike. "How do ya think I did?"

((Er..I posted right after rooster that I was there for the tryouts. >>, just since I guess you missed it. :x))

Trixie frowned a bit at that, wondering if they just hadnt noticed her coming in or anything..then realized her mistake, and slapped herself on the forehead. "Aw crud, I forgot to sign in. But Um, I'm here for the tryout too", waving her hand for emphasis.

Mike grinned over at Val. "I think you did great out there Val." He leaned back a bit and watched as Trix lined up to tryout next. "You'll probably get on the team no problem."

(slaps forehead...Do'h!...sorry Trixie..my bad. I missed it on my way through.)

Franky glanced down at her watch, mentally begging it to go faster.

She smiled as Val made it to the bleachers, landing neatly next to Thorn, before looking up at the waving hand in the bleachers.

"No worries." she nodded, her brain mentally filling in the rest *not like you have anything better to be doing*.

She mentally slapped herself for being snarky with...herself.

Dang...all this "cheer" was really getting to her. It was worse than Christmas.

Trixie nodded, taking a deep breath and handing off a Hairspray CD, pointing out the right track, before taking a position and taking another deep breath, launching into her routine as "You Can't Stop the Beat" Started blaring over the speaker.

She obviously had been working on this for more than a few days, managing to keep up with the high intensity song and even throw in a few jumps and attempts at cheerleader-like flips, The style of her performance being something between cheerleading and broadway style dance. Either way she seemed to be letting herself simply move to the songs beat and enjoying a chance to show off her athletic talents outside hero time.

The song continued through to its second and then third verses, trixie alternating the movements between a few styles when she could fit them into the beats, almost tripping a couple times but doing her best to keep the electric smile plastered on regardless, after all.

The song of course eventually came to an end, trixie managing to puncuate the end beats with a couple slightly more risque hip thrusts and then a "Go Flyers!" cheer before stopping, tiredly grinning as she walked to get her music and take a seat.

(Hopefully I didn't miss anyone else. If I did, forgive me...these back pain meds are killer.)

Franky looked over at the assembled group in a small formation on the far bleachers. She scanned her list again, checking it twice (Oi...with the Christmas references).

She paid another lingering glance to the gym doors, visions of November Bell and Faster Pussycat crashing through her head.

Reluctantly, she turned her head and looked at Bri.

"Well.....think that's it?"

Yuki stood at the heavy gym doors. She peered threw the small square windows at Trixie trying out. She didn’t fully understand why she wanted to do this. With her hand lightly touching the metal door handle she could feel vibrations as the music echoed threw the large hollow room.

She sighs.

“What the hell am I doing?” She asks her self.

She lets go of the door and turns around and walks away.

The music stopped as she hears Trixie cheering. “Go Flyers”
Yuki stops again and shakes her head.

There is no reason she shouldn’t try out for the team. She loved dancing. She went to gymnastics for years and with all the intense training at the dojo she’s put in, she could jump higher and spin in the air with ease. So what was stopping her? Why was she nervous? She asked her self as she stood there.

“Are you going to let that chick make you afraid to try?” A small voice in her head mocked her.

Yuki tilts her head surprised at the random thought of truth.

She jerks around and proclaims, “No.”

She shoves the heavy doors open with an echoing calamity and confirms to her self “Let’s do this!”

Franky was looking over at Brianna but turns along with others at the source of the noise. Yuki stops for a moment and give a sheepish grin and gives a little wave at everyone.

“Hi.”

Nothing. If it was possible this would be a perfect place to add cricket noises. Yuki’s grin fades quickly and she blows the strands of hair that collected over her eye out of the way.

Yuki puts her bag down and pulls out her music. She walks with reluctant confidence up to Franky and hand her her pink Ipod.

“It’s the only song loaded” Yuki whispers with a wink.

She pulls her over shirt off and tosses it aside and finds the clearing where the others have performed and makes sure her undershirt is firmly tucked into her skirt. Yuki gets into position and stays motionless waiting for the beat.

The music begins. Slow at first then the voice and rock pops. Yuki stands staring at the floor motionless while the song reaches its first high note with a strong beat. The female vocalist pauses and the music fades in an echo. With out notice the music and voices scream and the rock blasts. Yuki jumps up with a bright smile. Her hair wips around as she jerks her head up. She lands with her feet evenly spaced shoulder wide and hands cupped in front of her face.

"Oh Kay!" She makes a solid clap.
"Lets Go!" She gives her words as much energy she can muster.

With the next set of beats she pivots her hips facing the judges square on and gives a wink and a cheesy smile. She jerks her hands high in the air in a V and slowly bridges her body back until her hands touch the ground behind her with her feet still firmly planted. With a kick of her leg she moves to a handstand. Her legs spread outward making a T shape as she folds her body down strattling the floor. She shoves her hands out like daggers and yells.

"The other team you need to sit down and gasp!" She puts her hands on her hips.
"'cause the Fliers' are goin' to kick your..." She covers her mouth with one hand then jumps to her feet.
"Go Fliers!!! She makes two loud claps.

Yuki runs down the bleachers raising her hands trying to get the mock crowd to cheer and yell then turns and sprints back. She double steps and jumps into the air. She twists her body and flips end to end down toward the judges before bouncing the last flip high stretching her body straight and landing with her knees bent. She bobbles her head up and down to the song as sweat beads down her forehead. As the music winds down she cheers and jumps in place keeping the spirit going.

The song stops and Yuki drops her smile and walks over to the stereo. Franky hands her the pink Ipod as Yuki gives her a small smile. She calmly walks over and pick up her over shirt and slings in over her shoulder. Yuki doesn't even look back and she leaves the large room with a metal clang of the doors.

Francis took a moment before sliding her feet from the rickety table and standing up.

"Alright," she called to the assembled group. "Try-outs are officially closed. Thanks to everyone for coming today. We'll be posting the cheer roster by the end of the day."

She paused.

"So...you know...you can now go do...whatever."

Casting a glance toward her co-captain and attempting to maintain a neutral expression at the same time was not easy.

"C'mon Bri. Gym office is this way."

Franky hauled the CD player and clipboard into the office, hearing the soft smack of the door closing behind her. If the accompanying footsteps were any indiciation, she figured Bri must be close behind her. Turning, she tossed the clipboard with its accompanying notes and random doodles (one that had a striking resemblance to a game of hangman without the letters prominently displayed in black Sharpie) on the desk.

"Ok, let's hear it. I'm sure you're just dying to tell me how you think that went."

Kara shrugged and stood up, favoring...well, favoring both legs. She was looking forward to soaking in something warm, preferably with bubbles. "Good job, everyone!" she called out as they filed out the doors.

Brianna smiled brightly as she watched the people begin to file out. She stood, following Franky with her head held high and her shoulders back. After all, she was headed into a negotiation. And at a negotiation you had to be confident. As she closed the door behind them, she leaned back and crossed her arms in front of her, the smile fleeing from her face now that her audience was gone.

"It went okay," she began slowly. "Roo is definitely back in."

Start small. Work up to it. Let her give a little too.

"Kara and Abby were good. If Kara hadn't have fallen, hers would have been perfect. Matt would be a good base. Think he can lift someone?"

Bri went about inspecting her nails, smirking inwardly at the two of them staring down each other. Franky in her old, worn uniform and goth makeup. Bri in her crisp short skirt and fitted top, her tan skin a drastic contrast to Franky's pale complexion.

"How do YOU think it went?"

Franky nodded, seemly to her own thoughts more than anything else.

"Well, we need boys one way or the other. Can't do much without chick-chuckers anyway."

The newly-blonde goth made it a point to plop into the seat behind the gym office desk, sneakers landing squarely in the center of the open calendar.

"We might even be able to manage an even number of them this time. Might make an actual pyramid for once...."

She trailed off.

"Well, we need ten for the pyramid. That doesn't leave much wiggle room. I say we go for broke and hope no one bails."

Bri scoffed at the goth across from her. Surely, she wasn't serious. All of them? She crossed her ankles and shot a look across the desk. She had been right in thinking this was a negotiation. She had given her low offer and Franky had replied with her high. Now to hammer it out.

"I think taking all of them is a mistake, Franky. That's why the cheer squad is in such a sorry state to begin with. If one takes unqualified people, one gets an unqualified squad." Bri smiled coldly and crossed her arms again. "But if we need more, Val, Trixie and Yuki show some potential. They could probably be great cheerleaders with some practice."

Bri leaned forward to emphasize her next statement. "But Elly and Michael... They don't belong on this squad, Franky."
