Coach Jeff Waters

Post by Mimi »

Coach Waters is a man that has the kind of looks that you just can't tell his age. Slightly thinning hair has led him to start shaving his head (better to be bald than balding), and has a little bit of that 'hard beer gut' look about him. You'd swear he might have been a drill sergeant at one point, and he's got the bark to prove it. You screw up, and you can expect to get dressed down, and then be mowing the field with your Saturday. All this aside, he also cares alot about his students, and even moreso about his athletes. He's been known to help students out in those 'delicate' situations where the nuns are perhaps just better off not knowing.

He keeps a tight rein on his teams, but has also been known to host the after game celebrations, and really putting on a bash. While the students just think that it's "so cool", his motivation is again, the safety of his kids. If they're at the party that he throws, at least they're somewhere where he can stop them from doing something stupid. All in all he's a kind of "kids will be kids, but they'll be kids while I'm watching" guy.

Coach was never really a superhero, per se, although he does have abilities beyond those of mortal man (sorry, couldn't resist). His powers are a bit less obtrusive though. He's an power dampener. Which makes him uniquely suited to coach a school full of budding superheroes. By using his powers, he makes students push that little bit extra, or use powers in a way they wouldn't have normally though of, helping them discover their powers, and develop new ones. This also would explain how the school can exist without getting blown up by errant powers, since it doesn't have a true 'danger room'.

The extent of the Coach's power-dampening has not been fully codified. However, it is safe to say that he can exert a moderate amount of control. He can dampen one power while allowing others to function, or restrict the level of a power without shutting it off completely. He can affect several (or even dozens of) students at once, though it is reasonable to assume he cannot dampen the powers of someone who is not within his field of vision. However, the exact "area of effect" has been left undefined. While he cannot use his powers like a scalpel, it is fair to say he can use them like a rusty knife: with a fair degree of specificity, accuracy and finesse.
Examples of his dampening field have been:
  • Allowing an entire SJS football team to play a normal, unpowered team (with only minimal accusations of cheating);
  • Enabling a student to use their blasts, but not their nova;
  • Sapping the energy from a student who was using a nova to prevent the action;
  • Suppressing magical energy, alien physics, and super-science as well as mutations.
It has also been suggested that the Coach's dampening field could be used to greater effect and with greater precision, but the Coach himself does not possess the knowledge and/or training to do so. One example of note was when a Gemini twin absorbed the Coach's power and was actually able to see a group of invisible students before she turned them visible-- which suggests that she was able to dampen the invisibility in a very specific way before shutting it off completely.

Thanks to Oby for the original writeup of Coach Waters, and to Wachabe for the original Waters concept.

Sounds like he and "Cap'n Jack" might hang out a little.

So does this mean that I can't just jump in midair during the football game (I think I'm the Cornerback....I cover the wide recievers :D )) and catch the ball? That is cruel....

Well, Coach uses his powers to help students refine and control their abilities. He has a starring role in Your First Day, where you can see him use his abilities.

I think, for our purposes, it is more useful if Coach Waters can really use his powers like a scalpel. He can suppress one of your powers while leaving you the rest, and can even partially suppress one of your powers, keeping it under control so you do not harm yourself or others.
