Joni flinches at "born that way" before she realizes Amy is referring to her abilities. "The... umm... well, the doctors aren't really sure. I didn't have the ability at birth, by all appearances, but my blood temperature was slightly below normal... and over the next few years it just got colder and colder. I might have always had the ability to draw heat, but I wasn't really conscious of it until about age seven or so, and I wasn't really good at it until twelve... until then I could only do it with the heat directly surrounding me. Not really conscious action until then, just stick me in a warm bath and make sure to pull me out before I'm sitting in a block of ice, or something like that. That's how they kept me from freezing until I got better at it. But trust me, you wouldn't want to be me... it's miserable not being able to go out in normal weather without a set of heating pads under your clothes. Or not being able to take a long nap outside of a controlled climate."

"Oh...ummm...sorry. Didn't mean to pry or anything. I just get really curious about everyone, mostly because alot of them never talk much, well, at least not about themselves. It's hard getting a picture in your head of what they all look like just from their voices."
Somewhere under the table Bailey snuffled.
"I mean, to be fair, mine was a car accident really, well, kind of. Well I mean I think it was anyway. Oh shoot, now I'm just babbling again. Didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."

The doors to the tram hissed open to the cacophony of sounds from across the business district. Nennya and Bryan stepped off the tram to Steel Canyon. He was speaking to her as they walked. “I’ve never been to this place before but Jason told me it was a pretty good.”
They walked the few blocks to the Emerald Dragon. Nennya was quiet, only speaking up to ask Bryan a question. She listened intently to him as he babbled answers. She seemed interested in his powers, one of Bryan’s favorite subjects, so he was more than willing to talk. As they got to the restaurant, Bryan opened the door for her. “After you.” he said to her with a smile.
The two teenagers got into line waiting to order, from the back the shouts of the cooks could be heard clearly though the spoke to one another in an unfamiliar language. Bryan ordered their food and the two made their way to an empty booth in the restaurant. Sitting down, Bryan got quiet for a second. Nennya caught the boy staring at her. He quickly caught himself. “I’m sorry Nennya, I didn’t mean to be rude. I was just thinking about the people I’ve meet since I got to St. Joe’s.” Bryan got quieter and leaned forward some;“You don’t have to answer if you don’t want.” He paused trying to think of the best way to phrase his question. “Were you born with your… um … fur?”

She coiled a length of hair around her finger, a nervous habit. What to do? she thought to herself. A big fat lie, or the truth? She scanned the menu, looking for something with fish. Bryan seemed nice. Better, her intuition told her he was nice. So why not the truth?
"I was born with fur. And the ears. And the spots. It's feline. I know I'm not as kitty as Faster, but I'm still kitty." She smiled at Bryan. "How about you? Born all slickery and pink like that?" He nodded. "I assumed that. That's cool." She waggled her hairless palm and fingertips at him, where the skin showed, dark russet. "Shrimp lo mein," she said.
"Eh?"
"I like shrimp lo mein. Yummy yum. Do you have siblings, Brian? Parents? Are they different like you?"

"Oh, no, not at all! And I'm sorry about your accident... and that I was acting like I had..." She stops herself and giggles nervously. "We're getting into an endless cycle of apologies now. Maybe we should try again. Umm... did you..." She pauses to check her pockets for something. "...did you still want to know what my face felt like? I can reheat and be back in less than a minute."

“I don’t think I’ve meet ‘Faster’ yet.” Bryan felt like he may have made her uncomfortable by asking about her fur. “Uhh… yeah. I have parents. Are they different?” he paused for a moment.
“Oh! You mean different like us? Not that I know of. My dad is a normal working ‘Joe’. My mom works at a local tailor sewing and stuff” He smiled back at Nennya. “I have one brother, his name is Rudolf but we just call him Rudy. He’s a big guy like my dad.” Bryan chuckled nervously. “I’m still waiting on a growth spurt or two.”
“What about you? What are your parents like? Do they have…” he paused to look and see if anyone was listening, “Powers?”
Bryan looked over Nennya's shoulder "Cool, here comes our food."

"Well, I suppose it's better than being thought of as 'the cold girl' for the next four years. Hold that thought; I'll be right back." Joni gets up and heads over to the radiator.
While she's absorbing heat from it, she looks around uncertainly, then digs into her pocket and pulls out the earmuffs City Hall was handing out to all heroes. They didn't fit her properly, so she'd stuffed them in her coat and forgotten about them, but now... She positions them carefully in front of her offending ears. Hopefully that'll block any attempts to locate them.
A minute later and she feels warm enough to proceed. She returns to her chair. "Okay, sorry for the wait."

They ate fried dumplings out of the bag on the way back to the school.
"My parents have tons of powers," Nennya said, grinning. "They have all the powers!" She snagged a sip of her thai iced tea and re-checked their order for the fourth time. "Well, no, not all the powers. They each have some little power but me and my siblings have everything they have, with a little more 'oomph.' And yes, one of my parents is kitty. TOTALLY kitty. Well, not totally kitty. But he's more like a cat than a man." She wiped her fingers on a paper napkin and straightened her knee socks. "Not that it's a deal here at St. Joseph's. You can't swing a string without hitting a student with the ear-to-toes upholstery. Like all those little ones with the huge fluffy tails running up and down trees in the Arboretum? Heh."
"Wh--the squirrels?"
"Squirrels nothing. That's just what they WANT you to think. In fact, there's a sizable population of the school posing as quadrupeds. I'm not sure what they're after, but I will find out. In time. Although I think Amy Graves' dog is benign. I don't know what his agenda is. He likes Amy, though."
They strolled back onto the school grounds and divided up lunch, Nennya disdaining chopsticks in lieu of a sensible fork. "Your conversation is like gravity," she said at one point, when the end of the meal was in sight. "If I send a question to you, you answer it and send the same question back to me. Like a shuttle doing a slingshot orbit around a planet." She used a chopstick to draw a brief illustration in a puddle of soy sauce on the table. "Do you think that's always true of superpowered people? That their methods of conversation, or their psychology always echoes their powers?"
He shrugged. "I think it's more how you're perceiving me, not how things really are. If you want a bench test, how about you, Nennya? Is your personality just a reflection of your powers? Or are you more than that?"
She stared down at the tips of her left hand which were now all capped with discarded jumbo shrimptails. Nennya shrugged, and was silent.
Am I more than by body? More than the flesh that holds me together? More, perhaps, than the careful map of nucleotides that directs every function of that body? She frowned, bit her lower lip. And if I am, what is that essential 'me' that can direct the pattern of my body? If it is not in the flesh, where can it be said to be?
"Nennya?"
"Sorry, Bryan, my mind was wandering. Look, my fingers are mermaids!"
A bell rang.
"I've got class in ten minutes," she said regretfully. "But it was nice getting food with you, Bryan. I thank you." She slipped the menu inside her blazer pocket, patted it, and waved bye-bye with her mermaid fingers.

Amy shifts in her chair so that she is facing what she thinks is where the other girl must be sitting. She raises both hands up slowly and carefully.
"Sorry if I poke you in the eye or something, just umm...tell me if I'm about to jab you."
With a slight lean, the blind girl rests the very edge of her fingertips against Joni's cheeks. Confident she's found the right spot and is not in danger of injuring the other teen, she moves her fingers up and down across jawline, nose, forehead and chin, drawing what almost seems to be an invisible grid. Accidentally, her fingers brush the synthetic fluff of an ear muff.
Amy draws her hands back into her lap and giggles. "I got those too but someone said mine were two different colors so I put them on Bailey. Ummm...Thanks Joni, I appreciate it."

Joni tenses up just a little at the contact, but does her best to relax.
At the comment on the earmuffs, she smiles a little. "Yeah... guess it's nice for you to have the uniform, so you don't have to worry about whether you're clashing. And, umm, no problem." She smiles a bit wider. At least one person on campus won't be staring at your skin or ears all the time.

Bryan sat with his back against a tree, as he pondered what Nennya had said to him. Well, the other thing besides the disturbing bit about the squirrels...
About their conversation, or his lack of originality it seemed. "Do you I speak like my powers?" he mumbled to himself audibly as he gathered the trash and his books. Maybe she perceived something that he, himself was not aware of. More than anything he was merely curious about the girl, now that he had stumbled across her a few times. She was mysterious and he admitted to himself, cute.
He was merely trying to learn more about her and he more comfortable throwing the questions she had asked back at her. Assuming that if she was prepared to ask then she would be prepared to answer.
"Oh well" he sighed. "I wish I wasn't so boring." He sat against the tree focusing on the fortune cookie that sat in front of him. Concentrating on the shell, it crumbled to dust without being touched. He brushed away the crumbs and read the slip of paper within.
"Accept the next proposition you hear."

"Ummm, I don't suppose you could give me a hand on something could you, Joni?"
Amy begins to fidget in her chair. "I'm supposed to research this paper on the French Revolution for Sister Moltar's class and the talking computer over in MECCa is being fixed. Could you help me find a book?"
She offers a weak smile.
