"Hey! New kid!" the Coach barked from the field. "Get that helmet on and get out here!"

"But... I... I'm not on the football team..." the small boy said as he sat on the wooden bench reading a comic.

"Well, you got a uniform on don't you?" the coach was visibly starting to get annoyed.

"But.. I was told I wouldv'e have to play" Bryan replied sheepishly.

"GET OUT HERE NOW!"

Gravwarp scrambled to strap the oversized helmet to his head. He fixed his glasses through the face mask. He strode over to stand beside the coach.

"Yes, coach." Bryan said as he walk up. He was mad that the coach had embarassed him, especially with the girls watching. He was new here, that was bad enough without being bullied on the football field too.

"When I call you Baxter, you come. Understood?" The coach wasn't really asking, he was telling. "Now, you know how to play. Right?" Gravwarp nodded. "Good, you're on the offense."

Gravwarp lined up with the other players nervous to be a small kid on a field filled with giant guys. He heard the quarterback call out he play. Bryan had no idea what he was saying. He was too bust praying that the ball stayed far away from him. He heard the word "hike" and he started running.

Gravwarp say that he had run past most of the other players, they didn't seem to concerned over one scrawny kid. When happened to look up...

There in the sky was the football coming right at him. He raised his arms and by some miracle caught the ball! That's when he saw all the defensive players charging after him. He panicked, instictively he turned on his personal defensive gravity field. The boy closed his eyes and just started running.

He could feel a few of the other players hit his field and bounce off. He was overjoyed, he just continued to run and run. Through a haze of elation, Bryan Baxter heard a whistle blowing. He stoped running and opened his eyes. He was standing in the endzone!!!! Gravwarp starting doing a very embarrassing attempt at a Scoring dance that included such classic moves as the Cabbagepatch, the Robot and even the Running Man.

He was very happy!

Until, he heard the laughter... it seems while running with his eyes closed. Gravwarp had gotten turned around after a player hit him and he had run to the opposite endzone. And after scoring for the other team, commenced to celebrate.

Gravwarp, placed his helmet down gentlely on the ground and walked away from the field.

((This is from the Football game that took place LAST thursday between SJS Flyers and the Mt. Pelon Paladins))

St. Joe's Falls to Mt. Pelon Paladins 42-17

Thursday night opened to a large crowd excited about their Flyers football team, which had compiled a 5-1 start to the season. While the start was a shock to many of the other teams in the division, it wasn't to Coach Jeff Waters.

"We've got some talented players and I'm not surpised that they're doing well. We can run with any team out there."

Evidently not. The Flyers managed an anemic 225 yards of total offense, and were held under 100 yards rushing for the first time all season. From the first gun, the Flyers seemed overmatched. The stingy Paladin defense constantly closed holes, leaving normally elusive running back Anotine DuBois no alley to run through, although he did manage to finish with 30 carries for 77 yards on the night. When forced to the air, quarterback Scott Sanders faired no better. En route to a 10-28, 128 yard performance, Scott threw three interceptions, and didn't manage to get the ball into the end zone.

The Flyer defense proved little cure for the offensive woes. Paladin running back Jeffrey Clauson ran for 158 yards, gashing the Flyer defense for runs of 25 and 45 yards.

The one bright spot for the Flyers came early in the second quarter, when middle linebacker Biff Hannigan forced a Clauson fumble, and defensive end Alex Waters scooped up the ball and rumbled 37 yards for a Flyer touchdown. The touchdown closed the Flyers to within 3 points at 13-10, the closest they would get in the game.

While the Flyers are still all but assured a playoff berth in the state chamionship tournament, the loss makes the road to that championship that much harder. When asked about the loss, and what it meant, QB Scott Sanders said the following.

"Sure it's tough. We came out here looking for a win, and thinking we were prepared for them. It just didn't work out that way. We can't dwell on it though, there's still 5 more games till the tournament, and we need take each game seriously."

When we caught up with Antoine DuBois, he had a different perspective. "We got our brains beat in for 60 minutes out there. They beat us in every facet of the game. Sure, I'm going to tuck this one away, and remember it for the next time we face them, hopefully in the playoffs."

Which is very likely, should the Flyers get back on track after this loss. The question remains, will we see the dominant 5-1 Flyers team from weeks past, or will that be a repeat performance of tonight's misery? Time will tell.

Oby ran after the new kid, and grabbed the back of his pads, holding onto the neck. "Uh uh, kid, not so fast." He pulled Grav, good naturedly back to the other players, many that were still laughing. Alex Waters, or Glacial Mass, came up and stuck Grav's helmet into his gut, so the boy had to grab hold. "You don't get away that easy. You've stuck your foot in it this time."

A voice rang out from the group, "Hey, maybe if he stuck one foot out, he won't get turned around." the group burst into gales of laughter.

Alex looked over at the cornerback, "Hey Simmons, he may have run the wrong way after making the catch, but the first play rookie burned your ass pretty good to MAKE that catch."

The chorus of oooooo's that accompanied that, shut Simmons up pretty quick.

Biff Hannigan, the captain of the football team, and middle linebacker came up to Grav and put a hand on his shoulder. "Yo, kid, you better stick around and make more of those grabs, we could use a good pair of hands." He then squeezed the shoulderpads with an audible creak of protesting ballistic plastic, as he leaned in to glower at the boy. "And if you don't, you'll be answering to me, and it ain't gonna be pretty, got it!"

Oby could almost hear Grav's gulp as Grav hastily nodded, wide-eyed. Oby and Alex laughed, and Biff joined in, although much more menacingly. Oby nodded to Alex, who put the helmet back on Grav's head, all three of them gave Grav a headslap, jostling the boy a bit. Oby leaned down and grabbed the facemask, tugging a bit back towards the rest of practice. "Get back in there, you still have work to do," Oby grinned, "Wrongway."

As Grav headed back to the rest, hands buffeted him companionably, and calls of "Hey, Wrongway" and "Alright Wrongway." sounded out from around him.

The redness of Bryan's face was slowly fading as the players continued to rib him. He was thankful that Oby and Alex had defussed the situation quickly. Grav laughed nervously and tightened his chin strap and headed back to the group.

After sitting in the stands and watching the other new kid be accepted. JT thinks to himself "Hey maybe this place won't be so bad."

He continues to watch as the kid, lines back up on the field for the next play. This time he gets it right, and the offense in line up begins to celebrate with him in the endzone.

"Ya, maybe not a bad place after all." He stands up and walks from the bleachers.

"err.. oh no... don't tear... ewww this doesn't look good... maybe here..."
Kali continues to mumble to no one in particular as she attempts to hang one of several Flyers banners .
" man ... this isn't as easy as I thought it would be... who'd a thought hanging a big piece of paper could be so tricky" she continues to mumble as she stands back and looks at the somewhat slanted , wrinkled banner.
With a smile she shrugs and giggles follwed by a loud
" Go Team !"

As the team continues to practice for the rest of the afternoon, Bryan was doing his best to catch on to the nuances of the game. Scott, the quarterback, was helping him learn where he needed to be and what to do.

They were all calling him "Wrongway" now. It didn't really bother him as much as it might have before coming to St. Joe's. Everyone was being pretty relaxed about the whole incident, though a few were still being mean about it (there always are). Bryan was taking it in stride, he was actually having fun playing. Though he was getting hit pretty hard, the padding and his fields were keeping him pretty safe from getting hurt by all but the roughest of tackles.

Coach Waters was putting him in places where his speed was put to good use. Plus, he seemed to be pretty lucky at catching the ball. Though the coach was dampening his powers, he was finding that by focusing on the ball to catch it; he was subconsciously making the ball lighter and easier to grab.

As the Coach barked at Gavwarp for not getting to his position fast enough after the snap, he pulled Bryan from the field and sent him on laps around the field. "I'm timing you, new kid! Run!"

Off he went, running like the devil was after him.

Oby walked onto the field looking in both directions seeing who was still around. It was the end of the day, so there were a few guys practicing routes and coverages, but most everyone else had gone. He motioned behind his back to Alex, who came walking up with another player kind of behind him, walking hurriedly.

"Alex, you know how to hold for a place kicker, right?"

Alex shrugged, "I guess I could do it, sure. Laces out, hold it light. Can't be that hard."

"Good, get her out there on the field and set up for a kick."

"How far, Oby?" Alex asked.

"Hell if I know?" Oby looked at the other player in pads and a helmet. "What's the length of your leg, Sam?"

Blitzen, or Sam, answered, and if any of the players around recognized the female voice, they didn't react, thank goodness. "The whole field?" Oby shot her a look, "Without powers...maybe 40ish."

"Okay, here's what will do. Get her out there and set up for 40 yards. Wait till Coach explodes and rants, as soon as he does," Oby pointed to Sam, "you kick the crap out of the ball. No powers on the field."

They looked at him dubiously. "Just get out there, trust me." he looked at Sam, "Don't miss!"

She nodded and Alex and she ran out to about the 30 yard line, setting up for about a 40 yard kick.

Oby trotted over to Coach Waters, "Hey coach!"

"Yeah, DuBois, what do you need?"

"Hey, Samantha Douglas wants to come out and kick for the team."

"Sam..." Coach's face started to get red, and Oby waited for the slow eruption. "Tone, have you lost your mind?" Oby manuevered so Sam and Alex were easily seen over his shoulder.

"Coach, she's been practicing, and can kick the hell out of the ball, and accurate."

"Are you serious??! We have a kicker, DuBois, and we only need one. I don't care if..." Coach finally saw the vignette behind him, "is that her on MY FIELD!!? You there! Waters you better put that damn ball down right this insta..." Coach stopped mid sentence as Sam booted the ball out of Alex's hold and the ball travelled in a perfect arc to the goalposts. Oby willed the ball to travel, and Alex held his breath. Only Sam watched, confident it had the leg to make it. Soon enough the ball arced down clearing the crossbar with room to spare.

Coach looked at the cocky smile on Oby's face, and listened to Alex's whoop. Other players were all looking at the boot appreciatevly. "Alright, DuBois, she's on as a backup" Oby turned back to the other two, "Just a backup! As for you and Alex...you get an extra ten bearcrawls for bringing a non player on the field. Get to work!"

Alex came over and slapped Oby on the back, "Ah well, let's get to work, it's worth it. Welcome aboard, Sam!"

As the ball soared through the uprights, Grav rounded the corner of the field. "Way to go Sam!" he called out!

"Baxter! Did I tell you to stop running?"

Bryan continued on his run.

“Thanks, Bry, I ...uh... blitzed it!” Samantha replied, mimicking "marquee" hands towards Grav- who’d already gone back to his laps. Second string was good, for now. A little more practice and without needing so much precision, Samantha figured she could have a decent enough hang time to start a game if need be, but then again, the whole no powers thing? Placekicking was probably better. It was almost like soccer, except for the weird shaped ball and the fear that Alex was gonna Charlie Brown her.

“Hey, appreciate the shot and the chance you took.” She said turning to Oby and Alex, chucking Alex on the shoulder. "I’d bear crawl with you for the camaraderie, but I think I got y’all in enough trouble today as it is.” She flashed them a quick smile before retreating to the sidelines, avoiding making eye contact with the coach.

JT walks up and stands on the sidelines, hoping that maybe he'll get yelled at by the coach to come out there and show his stuff.

Though at the same time a nervousness seems to course it's way through his mental synapses.

why the hell am I so nervous? i mean there's only a chance this could happen.

He begins pacing up and down the field not hearing his name being yelled by the coach.

"Boy, didn't you hear me yelling at you?"

JT a little addled by being caught daydreaming looks up blushing. "Um...No sir sorry."

"I said if you wanna play you need to get out there for this play."

JT looks at the coach, "Where you want me?"

"Just get out there and stand behind the QB when he hands you the ball... run. that's all you got it?"

"um.. yes sir..."
JT walks past the coach and jogs out onto the field a smile beginning to crack the corners of his mouth.

Jt gets into position just in time for the snap of the ball. The quaterback hands it to him. He quickly scans the the line to find a gap.

"There...Right there.." He races off between the linemen only to be stopped 4 yards later by Biff. His head snaps back and cracks the ground.

He stands up looking up at Biff. "Nice hit."

He turns and walks back into position..

"Allright, Let's do this again," he thinks as he gets back into formation for the next play.

"Boy it's good to be back on the field.

Summer walked out onto the field with a clipboard, she scratched her leg. She hated these school uniforms more than any kid in a low rent public school could dream. The skirt alone was worthy being used to warm homeless people. She rubbed her nose, spiting the cold weather.

"Coach?" Summer asked.

He looked across his broadshoulder and down his tooth pick to Summer.

"Yeah, somethin up?" He asked.

"Actually yeah." Summer replied.

"Hey, you're that journalistic girl. I love that paper. I always copy them." He answered, "What do you need?"

"A job." Summer replied.

"Hahaha, I can't put ou on the team, I am considering that new girl..."

"Blitzen?" Summer finished, "Yeah I know she'd work well in this type of setting. However, I'm not here for that. I here to ask if I can be manager of the football team."

The coach raised an eyebrow, "We got Rob on it."

"Skittles?" Summer said paying more attention to the practice, "No offense but Skittles couldn't run a team full of super power students without getting a sexual harrasment charge."

The coach bellowed out a laugh, "Why do you want to be the manager anyway?"

"I do nothing to support this school, minus writing in a paper that's unsanctioned by any officers, teachers and officials. Being the manager of the football team is a legitiment way to give back to the school while ALSO enriching my own life and giving me something to work for."

"You've thought about this." He replied.

"I stayed up a couple nights after writing a new article to make my decision. I will not be disuaded by something. I want to manage this football team." She looked at him finally, "I want them to be the winners. They lost one game, crushing as it is, we've got a team of kids, super powers aside, who need something to work for. Something to bind them and make their own family."

The coach bowed his head and bit his lower lip as he thought about it. Summer watched the team like a hawk, governing the plays and the players themsevles. She was already doing research to help make this team a pile of champions.

"Alright, Rob was startin to bug me anyway." The coach replied.

"Thanks, you'll have my report tacked up on the noteboard tomorrow." Summer answered, "Make them work for it."
