"Well," said the news anchor, segueing into the last piece of news for the night, "It seems like Paragon City's about to see a drastic rise in its heroic population this week--comic book heroes and their fans will descend onto Paragon City tomorrow, to enjoy the sights and sounds of Paragoncom VII, the largest such fan convention on the East Coast. Linda Lanyer's at the Paragon Civic Center with more information. Linda?"
The camera cut away to a smart-looking brunette in a mauve suit, holding a mic.
"Thanks, Dave. Yes, I'm standing here in the grand hall of the Civic Center. You can see the activity behind me as convention vendors and organizers get ready to open their doors Thursday to the citizens of Paragon City and convention attendees from all fifty states and across the globe, who will come to participate in Paragoncom VII. Attendees will be able to buy and trade fan merchandise, attend panel discussions with artists and actors from popular sci-fi and fantasy shows, and perhaps even garner an autograph or two from their favorite author or celebrity."
"Any chance of Statesman stopping by?"
Linda gave a professional laugh. "Anything's possible, Dave. No real-life heroes are scheduled to attend in their professional capacity. Conventions like this, the largest on the East Coast, allow fans of the sci-fi and fantasy genres to meet and mingle, and celebrate their interests. Advanced tickets for the event are expected to generate over a half-million dollars of revenue for Paragon City, and the bloc of tickets reserved for residents are selling out quickly."
The camera cut back to the anchor. "Paragoncom VII will run through Monday, tickets available through Ticketmaster or at the door." He turned to his co-anchor, oozing false candor. "Well, that looks like fun, doesnt' it, Marlene? Y'know, I was always a fan of the X-Men when I was a kid. Loved that cartoon."
Marlene smiled. "I'm sure most men are fans of the X-Men after seeing Famke Janssen in a bustier in that last movie."
They shared a conspiratorial chuckle.
"That's it for us at Channel Five Action News. Have a Super evening, Paragon City."
Someone clicked off the television in the student lounge. A few blinked, staring at each other. And then there was a sudden scramble, and howls of excitement, as the bastions of teenage geekdom began making plans for a most excellent weekend.
