SJS Vs. The Vista Heights Bulldogs - 9/12/08

PREGAME

Sure, the team had won their first game, but Coach Jeff Waters attributed it to an insane amount of luck rather than skill. Still, they managed to pull it together, which mean they did have it in them. And there was no one more willing to try to drag it out of them more than Coach Waters. He wanted to be confident that when his team took the field they'd be ready, and as he watched them climb off the bus, he wished he was. He took a moment to wipe his brow with one of the team's hand towels to clear away a few beads of perspiration. Even though fall was approaching and the weather was cool, he'd been sweating. Truth be told, something wasn't agreeing with him, he cursed himself for having had lunch in the cafeteria, but it was hard to turn down pizza Friday. Sister Mary Thomas tossed him a wink as he paused on the steps of the bus.

"I'll say a prayer for the team, Coach." She told him with a smile.

"All right, listen up!" the Coach barked as the team readied itself on the sidelines. A few of the vets were being a little rambunctious, but he didn't want to quash anyone's energy level before the game. "You ladies got lucky last week, which is all well and good, but I don't want you to win by luck! I want you to win because you're the better team."

"Didn't we beat these guys last year?" William Briggs asked while shoulder checking Biff.

"42 to Seven or somethin'." Zack Aiken came back with, as Lonsdale Rayburn smacked his shoulder pads from behind.

"Twenty-Four to twenty." Samantha Douglas said with a smile. If only remembering math were as easy as football statistics. Immediately, most of the team broke into loud conversations on plays and the Bulldogs they remembered from the game last year, which caused Coach Waters to blow his whistle to get them to listen up.

"Knock it off!" He hollered. "We're a new team this year. They're a new team this year! Last year means nothing! So what if you came "this" close to state. This season you might miss it by a mile. The Bulldogs have a strong coaching staff, they're going to hit hard, meaning we're going to have to hit harder! Now go on out there and show them you're serious! Who are we?

"FLYERS!" the team enthusiastically replied.

"What?"

"FLYERS!" they called louder.

"Who?"

"FLYERS! BEAT THE BULLDOGS!"

Brandon bounced softly, keeping his calves loose. Things were starting to fade away, like they always did when he was really focused. He knew, somewhere in the back of his head, that people were out there in the stands already. He knew that somewhere, he could look up and see Aura, Kristen, probably Del. There were others, too, and he was sure that some of them were up there. Not to see him, of course, but that was part of the spectacle.

The stands started to fade. The noise was there, and would be until the end of the game, rising and falling. The cheerleaders, even, started to become irrelevant. Lasers were less focused than Brandon.

In his mind, the pages of the playbook were being laid out over and over. He knew the plays backward and forward, and now that was being tested. He had heard about their defeat of the Bulldogs last year, but there was no reason not to give it his all.

He laughed and shouted and howled along with the others, but part of him wasn't paying attention to that, or anything but the game. The field of battle beckoned.

FIRST QUARTER

The Vista Heights Bulldogs charged onto the field as the opening notes of Ozzy Ozborn's "Bark at the Moon" blared from the stadium speakers. The large crowd immediately began barking to show their support as a costumed mascot ran through the banner held by the Vista Heights cheer squad. The mascot himself held the leash of "Spike" a genuine English Bulldog, pet to Coach Clifford Gordon. Spike wore a dog-sized Vista Heights' jersey.

"Bringing out the mascots against SJS?" Ty kidded to Sam. "They're brave, I give them that." Sam had to smile, thinking back to the Jaynestown Hawk, with Noah and Diego. Needless to say, the display was intimidating to say the least.

The SJS cheer squad tried to make up for it, getting the smaller Flyer crowd rallied, but the majority of their attempts were drowned out by the woofing from the crowd.

"Welcome to the pound!" A 'Dog fan called loudly.

"They think we're in Cleveland?" Bryan kidded. The Flyers fans tried to retaliate with spay/neuter quips and calls to put the dogs to sleep, and Coach waters rubbed his hand across his forehead to ward off the inevitable headache. It would be a long game.

The Flyers ended up winning the toss, Zack Aiken catching the ball at the twenty and managing to get all the way back to the midfield stripe, as the rowdy crowd jeered. Aiken took a bow anyway, before huddling up with the others. Reed could barely call out the plays over the noise, and seeing as it was the Bulldogs homecoming, he couldn't see the enthusiasm dying anytime soon.

Reed faked a hand off to Antoine Dubois, and in the second play of the game managed to connect with Brandon Jordan with a twenty-one yard pass. With the Bulldog defense closing fast, Bryan Baxter shoulder checked Bulldog's cornerback Ken Kuvasz, which let Jordan cross into the endzone for the first score of the game. But the kick from Samantha Douglas was deflected by the Bulldogs Middle-linebacker, Ryan Spitz. Cornerback Kuvasz redeemed himself by recovering the ball, making it all the way deep into Flyers territory, being shoved out of bounds by Dubois at the 20. But the damage was done. Quarterback Russell Jackson took the field, and despite the best efforts of "Dozer" Singleton and Diyar Delavar, the Bulldog's tailback Terry Spinone found himself over the top of the large defensive linemen and into the endzone. Bulldog kicker Benji Border's extra point brought the first quarter score 6-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.

Cyrus Fairchild intercepted the ball late in the quarter, only to be blindsided by Spinone, and the ball re-recovered by Vista Heights. But despite their best efforts, Biff Hannigan and the defensive line managed to keep them from the end zone, but Border's kick for 29 yards was good, and "Who Let the Dogs Out" blared over the speaker system at the quarter's end.

It had been a tough week of practice, Diyar learning as much as he could from his new partner on the line. Sure, he had learned and assimilated a lot already in the month and some odd weeks leading up to the season opener, but now that he had the expertise of "one of the best," he had been struggling to play catch up.

Still, he knew he was ready for this game.

Diyar sat on the bench, frustrated, looking up at the game clock and the scoreboard.

I'm so ready for this, and we're getting our butts handed to us.

There was a whisper, far off in the back of his mind, almost unintelligable thanks to the power dampening of Coach Waters.

You're not giving up NOW, are you?

Diyar grinned a little, shaking his head. Hell no...

Whistles were blowing, and Coach was cursing yet again, turning to the bench. His face was bright red, and his hat was already on the ground.

"DEFENSE! GET OUT THERE! AND DON'T LET THEM GET PAST YOU, DAMMIT!!"

Diyar gritted his teeth, throwing his helmet back on to finish the first quarter. Singleton came up behind him, smacking the back of his helmet as they took to the field.

For about a minute, Brandon was snapped out of his focus by the surprise touchdown. The victory overwhelmed him long enough that he stopped watching the other team as closely as he should have. One of the defenders took advantage and smashed him flat from an unexpected angle.

He jumped up and shook it off, letting the crowd and the victory fade away again. All that mattered was the team, and running the plays.

SECOND QUARTER

St. Joseph's offense continued to sputter in the second, unable to get the ball out of their own zone. Things got worse when one of Bill Harrison's punts fell short, traveling only 24 yards before being caught by Bulldog's receiver Hayden Lowchen. The Bulldog's receiever ran the ball deep into Flyer’s territory, finally being tackled at the fifteen by Oliver Fox.

Coach Waters rubbed a hand across his face again, found it hard to keep his cool. Between the crowd's enthusiasm, the Bulldogs' momentum, and the lackluster performance of his team, he could almost feel his blood boil. He imagined the feeling like a kettle, right before the whistle blew. He chuckled inwardly.

"Steam." He said under his breath, blinking his eyes tightly.

After the snap, Russell Jackson faked right then handed the ball off to half back Bernie Harrier. Coach Waters was finding it hard to concentrate on the game.

"Defense!" The sidelines called. The Bulldog fans were on their feet and back to barking. Griff Clumber, the biggest offensive tackle in the league managed to upset Flyer Darweishi Brown, the two big players tumbling backwards on the field. With a small hole cleared, Harrier broke through across into the end zone making the score 6 to 17 in the Bulldog's favor. The extra kick was good, and the Bulldog fans let loose with a series of hows, yips and yelps as the Flyers offensive line took to the field.

"Go get 'em Bryan." Sam said, offering a smile and a punch on the arm to the boy who'd just left the bench.

"I'll run one in just for..." Bryan Baxter stopped mid-sentence, catching a glance of Coach Waters. "Hey Coach? You all right?" He asked with a worried expression. A few of his nearby teammates joined him, one or two running back from the field to see what the hold up was. The ref blew a few short blasts of his whistle while waving the team to the field, but most didn't move.

The field looked fuzzy... blury, Waters noticed. He blinked his eyes to try to clear them. A weird feeling came over him, nausea, maybe, he wasn't quite sure what. His chest felt heavy, and he was finding it harder to breathe. Tunnel vision set in. The sounds around him went from a deafening roar to a dull background noise. He blinked a few more times and thought he felt someone grab on to his arm, but he focus or concentrate enough to figure out who. He tried to speak to whoever it was but couldn't manage to make the sound, his tongue feeling swollen and numb. A feeling of uncertainty swelled inside him as the field went black.

The Flyer's team huddled around protectively, the Bulldogs looking on as well until the Vista Heights medical personnel ushered everyone back. The Flyers formed a barrier to give the coach space as he was checked out.

Kristen looked around the small Flyers crowd, wondering why everyone had suddenly gotten quiet. It was football, darn it! You aren't quiet in football! She followed the gaze of the boy next to her to the bench, watching them...catch the coach? Help him lay down?

She hopped up onto the bleacher seat to get a better view as the rest of the stadium fell silent.

Diyar was making his way back to the bench, his helmet unstrapped and ready to be flung off at the bench. He looked around the stadium, the fans all barking and howling like dogs.

I would pay real money to see this place get torched right about now...holy crap...

He passed Reed on the sidelines, getting ready to take to the field himself. He muttered a quick goodluck to the older teen, finding his place on the bench and tearing off his helmet as he reached for his waterbottle.

"Coach? Are you ok? Coach!"

The entire bench turned as Bryan held onto Waters' arm, Sam jumping up to lend a hand as he began to drop to the ground.

Players began to rise, while others on the team sat, in shock. Diyar jumped up, rushing over and helping move the coach so he didn't smack his head on the bench. Brandon rushed back off the field, along with a few others.

Diyar looked up, pointing at the first person he saw. "You! Get the medics, now!" Hannigan nodded, sprinting off toward the ambulance...

Brandon jumped up and followed Diyar, his concentration shattered. Somehow the game didn't seem quite THAT important right at the moment.

"Come on, guys, get back a little! Get him some air!"

Brandon knelt down, the medical training from his merit badges coming back to him slowly. Um...airway, check, boy was breathing. Okay...elevate legs, legs, legs...Brandon tore his helmet off and then asked for Diyar's. Between the two of them he got the legs elevated. "Okay...um...don't move him, til they get here. Okay, guys, give him some air."

He hoped and prayed that he wasn't screwing anything up.

Bri's hands shot up to her mouth, her pom poms long forgotten on the ground. This wasn't supposed to happen. Coach Waters was... well, Coach! He was a superman. Tough. He wasn't supposed to be vulnerable like them. "Oh, God. Oh God, Oh God."

She turned towards the shocked faces of the Cheer Squad, even Franky. There was no bickering. No in-fighting. No one moved. They all just waited. For anything.

The team milled around on the field waiting for word. Kara Evans looked worried. With the coach's unique power being active even when he wasn't conscious, even she couldn't get a feel for what was wrong, but it didn't stop people from asking. An ambulance backed onto the field, and most of the team took on the role of crowd control, keeping on-lookers at bay as Coach Waters was loaded into the back. Most of them tapped the metal vehicle to show their leader their thoughts were with him before it drove off the field without anyone saying a word.

The Vista Heights coach encouraged the Cheer Squads to put on the half-time show, while phone calls were made and questions asked about the continuation of the game. The Bulldog's squad performed beautifully to a crowd who largely had mixed feelings about celebrating. The Flyers cheerleaders were encouraged to do the same, but like the team and most of the visiting Flyer fans, their thoughts were with the coach, and it was decided they'd stay on the bench with the team waiting for word.

Kara sat on the bench, staring into space and trying to keep it together.

Being mind-blind while the coach was there was bad enough. She was used to it from other games, but it still felt like being blind. Then, suddenly, the field was gone and the emotions from all the audience rolled over her like a tsunami. Tears rolled down her cheeks, and she struggled to put the mental walls back up. Lights flashed around her head for a few seconds while she reasserted control, but she soon had her mind quiet again.

Now she just had to deal with her own emotions, which were strong enough.

Stephen Reed and Sister Mary Thomas plus a few of the team boosters went over to speak with Clifford Gordon, the Coach of the Bulldogs as the Vista Heights team remained in the lockers. The crowd's mood was a little more subdude than before, and an announcement that there would be a delay came through the speakers. Bryan, Sam, Luke and the others could see the discussion going on across the field, with Coach Gordon nodding in agreement.

Reed and the others returned to the vistior sideline as the team and cheer squad huddled around him.

"Listen up." He said, looking uncertain to how the team would react. "We can't play the second half, seeing as Coach is what put us on a level playing field. I don't know if this is going to count as a forfeit or not. Coach Gordon doesn't know if this will count as a forfeit or not, or if we'll get a continuation at some point, but as it stands, the game can't continue."

"So what now?" Will McCarty asked. Stephen Reed shrugged.

"We get back on the bus. We go home. We wait."

"What about Coach Waters?" Matt Lamport asked with a worried expression. "He's going to be okay, ya?" The team exchanged some worried glances, as Sister Mary Thomas herded them back on the bus, assuring them as best she could, and asking them to have faith.

Luke sighed as Reed delivered his "speech" with little emotion. Forfeit the game? F@#$ that.

He grit his teeth as the dialogue went on, looking at the other members of his team. Their powers don't make em' overpowered. We should play.
Luke: "Hey, I've got some standards for girls."
Franky: "What, two legs?"
Luke: "Nah, two nice legs."

Diyar sat down on the ground when the medics came to help. He just stared at Coach lying there on the ground, unable to think, every fiber in his body just numb.

"Di? Diyar?" Diyar blinked a few times, looking up. The stadium lights shone behind the figure in front of him, and he couldn't recognize him. "Hey man...you ok?"

Diyar nodded, turning his gaze back to where the coach had been minutes before. He blinked a few times, his breathing slow and steady. Music started to blast on the speakers as the Bulldogs cheerleaders took to the field, trying hard to keep everyone calm. He looked up at the bench. The Flyers squad was sitting, a few of the girls crying here and there, all the guys lost in their own thoughts - praying, wishing, cursing...

God... Diyar chuckled a bit at the irony. God...please...let him be ok...

He stayed sitting, eyes fixed on the spot where the coach had fallen.

"Mr. Delavar. Please, get on the bus."

Diyar shook his head, bringing his attention to reality. Sister Mary Thomas was standing over him, hand outstretched to help the boy up off the ground. Diyar nodded, taking her hand and standing, slowly, picking up his helmet. He looked around, noticing the rest of the team gathering up their things and trudging to the bus. He followed the column of bodies, still silent.
