Freezing Pens Again

Why don't you tremble?"
"I'm not cold."
"Why don't you turn pale?"
"I am not sick."
"Why don't you consult my art?"
"I'm not silly."

Sister Mary Martha reads aloud from the book Jane Eyre to her class.

Kali sits half listening as she doodles all over a notebook page.

One word is centered on the page with squiggly lines and little hearts and flowers surrounding it .

Looking over her shoulder as she walks slowly past , Sister Mary pauses in her reading....
" nice artwork Kalista " she smiles , adding " Who is Jack?"

Kali blushes profusely as the others in the room giggle. Thinking quickly she answers...

" I have a question too Sister Mary..... Why are you reading that weird book to us anyways? This is World History class not English" Kali smirks as the giggles become louder.

" Kali... I think you should go to the hall ... Ill be out momentarily to speak with you"

" freakin penguins " Kali mumbles as she stands to leave the room.
" What was that Miss Kali?" the Sister asks" something you would like to repeat louder?"

" I said freezing pens again .... my pen quit" Kali smiles as she answers and slips quietly in to the hall.

From the Rooftops – Soundtrack for Life

*thwump*

*thwump*

“I *LOVE* this song!” Jayna shouted, while hovering over the skyscrapers of Steel Canyon. Quickly changing directions from her earlier destination she teleports to the top of one of the highest buildings in Steel.

*thwump*

*thwump*

Her feet back on a solid surface of the building’s roof she quickly takes her backpack off to pull out her iPod to replay the song from the beginning.

The song starts again, “How many times have you been pushed around? Is anybody there? Does anybody care?” Sitting down on the edge of the roof looking out over Steel Canyon just at the end of the work day Jayna just listens to the song as it builds to its crescendo.

“It’s all messed up but I will, I will survive!” the song finishes but Jayna starts it up again.

“I’m not done with you yet!” She exclaims with a smile on her face. “This is why I want all my music with me, for these ‘just right’ moments that happen with just the right song.”

“I care Jayna,” the voice said.

“Ha! As if!” she quickly retorted. Something’s not right, that sounded like it came from behind me. She thought quickly turning around to see a purple cloud of smoke moving towards her as it formed into the shape of a teenaged boy.

“I do care, and about your wellbeing too,” the voice said, it’s features clearing up as the smoke dissipated. “There are things you don’t know, things you don’t understand, and things you choose to ignore, I only want to help you understand you.” The voice said with sincerity.

“What are you doing? How can you be here, I thought you were just a voice in my head?”

“Oh I am that, but that’s not all I am my sweet Jayna,” the voice answered, no, not the voice, but HE answered, sitting down next to her. “Don’t worry, I’ll help you remember everything eventually, but small steps for now, small steps.” He turn his head to gaze across the buildings. “I know this is where you want to be right now, and that’s ok, for now. In time you’ll understand your true place, where you’re meant to be, but for now you can play ‘hero’ if you like.”

Confused to no end by his appearance and his words, knowing that she knew him from somewhere but not knowing from where, Jayna could only manage to stare at the physical representation of what she thought had been torturing her all these years. No matter what he looks like, he, not it’s still done so many bad things to me, hurt me in so many ways.

“I’m very sorry for that Jayna, I didn’t really understand the situation properly until recently. I’m very sorry for the things I’ve done to you in the past, I just thought you knew everything that you know.” He answered her though, and she felt his sincerity, she KNEW he was telling the truth to her. “And as far as songs go, I much think this one is more appropriate for this time,“ he said touching her iPod causing it to start a new song, guitars and drums flaring to life through Jayna’s headphones as he disappeared.

“I can be anything that you want me to be…” the song started and she just stared at where he had been. That face, so familiar, where did I see it?

Hold your head high. The voice, back in her head, sang along with the song.
Don’t look down.
I’m by your side.
Won’t back down.
You wanted a hero tonight.

Well I’m not made of steel.
I’m not made of steel.
But your secret’s safe with me.

Don’t worry Jayna, until you’re ready for them, your secrets are safe with me.

A look of pure surprise on her face, remembering something from before, something she didn’t know, couldn’t have done, in no way could have been a part of, but was. Something that someone had kept a secret for her, someone who had been close to her, so very close…

The song continued on, without his accompaniment, the moment was broken, and as always Jayna was left with more questions than answers.

And yet, she had the answers, and someone that would help her get them.

“Hold your head high. Don’t look down. I’m by your side. Won’t back down. You wanted a hero tonight.” The song finished, and Jayna was smiling again, back in the air teleporting to Icon to get a real patrol outfit.
... I see you lying next to me,
With words I thought I'd never speak.
Awake and unafraid,
Asleep or dead...

Time had to be shifting, or morphing, or going backwards, or something. Rudi knew this because she was sure she'd been on this bus for at least a hundred years. That's what it felt like anyway, with her head ringing and her stomach churning and that damned engine rumbling louder than the Bruce reactor.

Going to the club had been a mistake. She was still too weak, too sick. Still lightheaded from the shots and the counter-shots and all those stupid questions that Doctor Lowen kept firing at her. What business was it of his if she'd made new friends at school, if she was "fitting in", if anything significant had happened in the last few days to affect her emotionally? She'd told him no. Nothing like that had happened.

It's not a lie if it's none of their business, right?

Poster board.... check...
Markers.... check...
Uniform cleaned and pressed.... check...
Sticks.... I need some kind of sticks...

Kali goes over the checklist shes made in her mind.

She lays the poster board out neatly across the floor of her dorm and begins to write in large letters...

FREE THE MONKIES!
CAGE ZERO INSTEAD!

On a second piece of posterboard she continues

MONKIES NEED LOVE!
NOT BATTLE ROYALS

Pleased with her results she gathers up her signs and heads toward Pocket D's new arena.

I'll worry how to hold them up on the way.... surely there's sticks someplace

Passing a construction worker she gets an idea and zooms down next to him , posterboard rolled neatly and tucked under her arm.

" Excuse me? Sir? Could you maybe lend me a hand? I need some kind of sticks or something for these signs to hold them up with? Do you think maybe youd have something? Some scraps or something you dont need?" Kali asks , her dark eyes hopeful.

" Well lets see what you got there and we'll see what we can figure out" The worker smiles.

The smile on His fades a bit as He unrolls the posterboard and sees whats written so boldly.
"I can fix you up , but I'm not so sure this will go over too well... Does your school know you're doing this?" He asks concerned.

" Its a personal project... " Kali answers , " please? this is important!"

" Ok but... you didn't get any help from me... right?" He looks Kali in the eyes and she understands nodding her head in agreement.
" Yup it was all on my own" she replies with a smile.

Her signs all fixed up she watches the worker depart and continues to Pocket D

Lets see how Zero likes this

She stands just outside the Entry door as the Hostess looks on and begins her picket pacing back and forth .

Sister Salvation sits in the back corner of the library enjoying the few quiet moments before the next hoard of teens comes in looking for random books.
As shes sliding the out dated cards out and stacking the returned books onto the cart a piece of note book paper falls out of the book onto the floor.
Picking up the paper she opens it revealing a border of colored hearts and the name Jack written in balloon letters and colored in with tiny swirly patterns. As she reads she half smiles , half gags from the cheesiness.

I have a boy.
A boy that laughs a lot. A funny boy. A boy that kisses me randomly. A boy that will let me sit on his lap & puts his arms around my waist. We watch movies & He isn't be afraid to say he liked it. A boy that will put his arms around me and pull me close if another boy is looking at me. A boy that can be jealous of my friends but still knows I love him most. We watch movies together & have play fights. He talks about me to his friends & smiles. We have tickle matches & wrestle until we fall on the floor. He sits and talks to me for hours me before I go to sleep. He plays with my hair & I don't mind. We cuddle just to be near each other. He sometimes watches me put on makeup even though he already Told me I don’t need it. I have a boy that has seen me crying & put his arms around me, knowing I didn’t want to talk , and waited quietly until I did. A boy that will whisper secrets in my ear So that no one else can hear. When we kiss I see fireworks & he does too. He’ll hug me if he knows I am sad, even if i have a smile on my face. He took me to his favorite resteraunt, & sat with me, holding my hand. He will sit with me for hours and talk about anything & sometimes not talk at all & be just as happy. He tells me I am beautiful, just enough times. He won’t break my heart or make me cry.
I love this boy.

Sister Salvation rolls her eyes and slides the paper into her desk. It isn't hard to figure out who's it is and giving it back could prove to be a tad amusing.

Welcome back Cronology

“What do you mean I didn’t pass physics!?”

Cron stood in the office holding a letter stamped with St. Joes logo embroidered in gold. The elegant lettering affordable with the tuition of the school’s price tag for a peace of paper, witch happened to be in Crons other hand.

“Well its right here Mr. Cron, 23 out of 24 credits…” A Gemini squinted reading the text scrolled across the computer screen. “Physics…Third Period…Dr. Oliver…Room…”

“42 yes I know! but…but…ONE CREDIT!? How?!” Cron stood there speechless.

“Don’t interrupt me Mr. Cron.”

“Gah! Just Cron! Come on lady I work for a living!”

The Gemini gave Cron a horrible scowl turning back the computer and typed away holding a nose up and away from him.

“Look I just want my diploma; I have a job and a place I owe my rent.”

A bit snooty, “Well Cron…” she said, “You’ll just have to cope if you want your diploma so bad then you will start your class on Monday room …” She paused glaring at Cron and then back to her computer “…42 with Dr Oliver”

Cron scowled turning away for a moment taping his fingers on his arms, then rubbing his fingers on the bridge of his nose.

“Look Lady…”

“That’s Sister Sinclair…”

“Whatever Sister Sinclair…look I can’t do that I work full time…”

Interrupted again “Class starts at 10:30am…” she turned pulled out a peace of paper and stamps it presents it on the table same borders and headings known to be used by the school. The paper was the same authorization paper that he saw when he first came to the school and dealt with the same Gemini so many suns and moons ago. Another paper was slapped over the top of it. A schedule depicting; class time, amount of credits, and teacher with room number, she pushed both papers to him. She reached across the desk and out of Crons hand jerked the diploma from him turned in her chair leaning over to file it.

A communicator was placed on top of the papers and she turned to her computer again. “Welcome back to St Josephs Mr. Cron”

Cron hangs his head cutting his losses taking the papers and leaves placing his hat on his head. From the office Gemini shook her head hearing Sister Moltars voice boom “Mr. Cron! You know as well as anyone that hats are not aloud indoors!”

“Ho-friken-ray me…” He mumbled.

Snow

Moonlight shines as cold winds blow,
Shadows fall across the snow,
Branches dip towards the ground,
Powder falls without a sound,
A billion stars this silent night,
See tracks across the sea of white,
A thousand hills, a million trees,
Two beating hearts and four weak knees.

There’s nothing here to hold us back,
No leash, no chains, no ties,
A universe where nothing lives,
But the fire in your eyes,
There’s endless possibility, a million things to do,
You promised me a better world,
But my whole world is you.

Fears collide as dim thoughts rise,
Ideas rage behind four eyes,
Reservations mixed with doubt,
Are torn asunder and cast out,
A place upon the forest floor,
Hungry eyes that promise more,
A union ‘neath the moon’s pale glow,
A fire built to melt the snow.

There’s nothing here to hold us back,
No leash, no chains, no ties,
A universe where nothing lives,
But the fire in your eyes,
There’s endless possibility, a million things to do,
You promised me a better world,
And my whole world is you.

Rudi stared at the page in front of her, reading the lines over and over again. It said exactly what she wanted to say. In her head, she could already hear the music she would write for it. Something with a driving beat, that would push forward, carrying the listener away like the she was carried away. Unrestrained. Unstoppable.

“I hope Mimi likes it,” she murmured, thinking of her friend and bandmate. “She’s going to have to sing it, after all.” Something about that thought caused the red-haired girl to pause. She gave the song lyrics another read through. It said exactly what she had wanted to say, but maybe… maybe it said too much?

“Oh my god, sing it? I don’t even want her to read it!”

Rudi started to crumple the song sheet, but couldn’t bring herself to let the piece go. Instead she folded it neatly and stashed it in a drawer. Then she grabbed her jacket and headed out to Atlas Park to see her friends.

Mimi spent the entire afternoon trying to figure out why her quadmate wouldn’t look at her.

Her legs tremble slighty as she sits holding the cedar box her mother gave her.
"Use it for something special" Imaya had told her daughter on her last visit.
Kali knew this was a good time to use it. She opened the tiny hook clasp on the front of the small chest and sat it on the bed beside her.
A New Year was just around the corner and she felt the need to start it off fresh. When Jack returned from whatever it was He had to take care of after it would be different for them. No more skeletons in her closet to haunt her.
On her dresser sat a small ornate jewelry box. She opened it carefully and removed an intricatly carved Jade pendant, closing the jewelry box afterward.
As she gazed at the carvings she turned the radio on paying no attention at first to the song other then the soft accoustic guitar which played.

You are still a whisper on my lips
A feeling at my fingertips
That's pulling at my skin

You leave me when I'm at my worst
Feeling as if I've been cursed
Bitter cold within

She hadn't even realized she was singing along at first. Not at first, not until the chorus came.

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you

Softly she sang along as she lined the cedar chest with a shimery red satin scarf.
Ever so carefully she now wrapped the pendant in another piece of the same material and layed it inside the chest.
The song continued to play and Kali continued to sing along.

You are still a whisper on my lips
A feeling at my fingertips
Thats pulling at my skin

Days go by
And still I think of you
Days when I couldnt live my life without you
Without you

Standing she walked to a nearby shelf and picked up a small model taxi . On its side shown tribal patterns rather than the usual checkered pattern.
Kali pulls the model car close to her chest as she sings to the radio

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you

This taxi , she looks fondly at and whispers
"Obsidian taxi at your service"
As she carefully wraps it too and places it also inside the chest.

Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by and still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you
Without you

The song is repeating the chorus now , the singers soft mournful voice reating the lines over and over again.
But Kali has stopped singing and now reaches on the same shelf for a crystal stone that rests there.
As she gazes into the stone several images form , some happy , some sad, and a tear falls from her cheek landing on the crystal. Almost as if the stone knew its fate , it splits in half as the images it has shown dissappear.
Again she wraps the pieces carefully and places this final object inside the chest.

"time to go visiting " she says to quietly .

Kali departs through the window , hoping noone has seen her leave.
It is early Saturday morning , the suns barely up , but she knows there are a few students like herself who don't sleep regularly.

First stop Founders Falls and an old friend shes avoided for some time.

The large Stone Lion appears in the morning mist above the Marina and Kali snuggles between the two huge familiar paws.

She reaches inside and takes from inside the pendant.

" Hello old friend , a new secret for you today" she whispers as she looks up at the massive stone face.

She holds the pendant out in front of her and says the words...

May it be beautiful before me.
May is be beautiful behind me.
May it be beautiful above me.
May it be beautiful below me.
May I walk in beauty.
This I wish for You as well

She closes her eyes and holds the pendant far from her and lets it slide from her slender fingers to the sparkling water below.

She sits snuggled against the lion for a bit watching the birds circle the boats that pass.
Fianlly she rises, she smiles and whispers goodbye to her friend and departs to Talos. Two more stops.

In Talos she heads to the waterfall. The grass was always so soft here. Like someone had taken extra good care of it. It reminded Kali of the grass on a golf course her father took her to once. So soft beneath her feet and not a dandelion in sight.
A small pool was at the top of the waterfall surrounded by many large stones. Kali poked her way around to the side until she found the small backpack still hidden there from months before. She pulled the backpack from between the rocks and sat in the grass.
Funny how she hadn't even thought it might not be here anymore.
The zipper didn't open as easily as she remembered but with a few tugs it was open and she reached inside pulling out a thin blanket part way.
She held the corner of the blanket to her cheek as she removed the little yellow taxi car from the chest.
She pressed her lips to the top of the model car and whispered again...

May it be beautiful before me.
May is be beautiful behind me.
May it be beautiful above me.
May it be beautiful below me.
May I walk in beauty.
This I wish for You as well

Wrapping the model cautiously with much care , Kali places it inside the backpack and returns the pack to its hiding spot in the rocks.
"Keep Him safe always"
She whispers quietly as she slides the hiding stones back into place.

Last stop, Serpents Teeth. The pool that was so much fun to swim in, had been so fun...

Kali sat on the stones that made up the sides of the deep warm pool and reached a final time into the chest.
As she lifted the crystal pieces from inside she tried one last time to see the pictures from within. but the pictures where gone now , and it was probibly for the best.

She held them out from her letting them slip intothe water and whispered a final goodbye...

May it be beautiful before me.
May is be beautiful behind me.
May it be beautiful above me.
May it be beautiful below me.
May I walk in beauty.
This I wish for You as well

It was done. She rose from the wet stones of the pool and headed to Spankys Boardwalk .
Just out from the beach sits a large rock , standing majestically from the water like a guardian , watching the shore.
Here she landed . She sat atop the rock and looked out upon the water.

Happy New Year she said as the breeze blew her hair in strands about her tan face. In her lap sits the chest and she smiles as the birds circled the shoreline. She wondered what this New year had in store for the three of them as well.

He was waiting for her in the public Arena, just as he'd promised. They'd reserved the floor for a private fight, but what they really wanted was a chance to be together. She ran into his arms, and he kissed her--a kiss that looked passionate but was actually a structured exchange of information. She tasted in him all the living presences he had encountered and stored since they'd last met, and he grasped from her all the stories of the lives she'd gathered. Joined together like this, in the kenning, she couldn't but help feel the depression and sadness in him, and she spent several more moments, once the kiss broke, holding him in her arms.

//You mustn't let yourself go to pieces like this,// she said, bound to him in a mental link. //Let me help you.//

He moved his hand flinchingly away, but she held tight, raised his knuckles to her lips, and sank monofilaments of her tongue into his flesh. As always, she found herself submerged by the echoing waves of information his body gave out, almost identical to her own. She moved forward, past the event horizon of cellular structure outwards, into his nurochemical pathways of his nervous system. A delicate touch needed here; she encouraged his dopamine receptors to open to normal capacity. The problem ws pleasure; his body was incapable of feeling it; his depression was harming him. And what she was doing was nothing more than a temporary fix; by tomorrow, or the next day, his neurochemistry would return his uptake to low levels.

She withdrew from him, but kept ahold of his hand. There was a series of tiny red pinpricks on the skin of his knuckles. She wrapped her arms around his waist and let him cry.

//I feel bad, Nennya,// he said to her. //Guilty for feeling bad about him while I'm with you. Because I love being with you.//

//It's okay to feel sad because you miss him,// she said back. //I understand.//

They sat there on the bench, snuggling into each other's sides.

//I have a date,// she volunteered shyly to him. He blinked, projecting surprise and amusement. //His name is Bryan, and he goes to St. Joesph's. We're going to a formal dance together.//

He mimicked a bump-and-grind, and she shoved his shoulder playfully. //No, you silly. It's not like that. He's ... nice.//

He picked up the ends of her hair and played with them. //A formal dance? Whatever will you wear?//

"That's the problem with me," she said aloud. "I really have no idea. Can you help me?"

He laughed. "I surely can! Where shall we go for coture? The Isles? Or is there something promising in Paragon you'd like to investigate?"

"You like clothing more than I do. I place myself in your hands. I want to look pretty."

"We're almost out of time here," he said. "Let's go to Paragon. Surely Face has something to offer." He stood up, and tugged on her arm. "Thank you," he said, holding on to her elbow in the tram. "I ... thank you, Nix. I needed this."

"You should have let me come to Bloodvine," she said. "Then you'd see me all the time."

"No, not the Isles. I've lost him. I can't think of losing you too. Stay in Paragon, where it's safe. I'm grateful to have you this close."

Before Joni came to Saint Joseph, her parents had kept her from freezing while asleep by moving to a house with a small sauna. It was inefficient, it took up extra space, it required her to keep all her belongings in a separate room, and it was costly to run all night every night. And it was still better than the next alternative by virtue of the fact that they would have needed to hire an architect and contracting team to design it from scratch.

By comparison, the "toaster" (still resembled a coffin to Joni, but Sandy had insisted she stop calling it that) that the school had purchased for her from who-knows-where accurately monitored her vitals and made sure she never dropped to an immobilizing temperature, all for a tenth of the energy use. It had several safeguards -- battery backup with a 12 hour life, emergency signal back to the school infirmary (and if they didn't respond, the nearest hospital) in the event of malfunction, manual releases from both inside and out. It was more comfortable; the minimal moisture inside meant they could install padding inside, as opposed to the sauna where the same padding would have been a mass of mildew in a week. It even included an "alarm clock" that would automatically raise her temperature to something stable for outdoors every morning right before the beeper woke her. In short, it was superior in every way. Every way but one.

Joni's eyes opened slowly. Aw, crap...

The internal monitors helpfully displayed her status for her. Heartrate: 68 bpm. Breathing rate: normal. Time: 3:42 am. Heating units operational. Air ventilation operational. Outside temperature: 16 degrees C. Inside temperature: 12 degrees C. Skin temperature: an acceptable 5 degrees C. There was nothing bothering to measure her blood temperature, which was at Way Into The Negatives degrees C but forever stable there.

There was also nothing monitoring the part of her body that was the current problem, because the toaster couldn't help her there either. It didn't come with a catheter.

She scowled and stiffly moved one hand to slap the "wakeup" button. The heating units started climbing to full power. She'd need at least four minutes before she would have complete movement; for now she was going to have to settle for crossing her legs.

Four awkward minutes later, the monitors pronounced her good and heated. She punched the release, spat out her vitals monitor, and bashed her head nicely on the lid as she tried to climb out without lifting it all the way.

Neither that nor a muttered phrase she'd picked up from Kat seemed to wake Sandy or Sam (who knew where Li was), though their sound sleep was likely for the same reasons she was in her current fix. Joni normally took care not to drink anything immediately before going to sleep, but Sandy had wanted her to celebrate her first bank robbery bust and they'd dragged her out to enjoy (virgin) margaritas at Super Mexicano until way past curfew. By the time they snuck back into the dorms, they were completely exhausted, and she'd just crawled into bed without thinking.

She double-checked to make sure her scalp wasn't bleeding, then tossed on her bathrobe and quietly hurried out of the room and down the hall.

Another few minutes later and she was feeling a lot less uncomfortable. She started to wash up... and then paused to look at herself in the mirror. Another scowl came, and she pushed her ears against the side of her head irritably. They defied her by springing back in place the second she released them.

There'd been other people in Mexicano, and most of them were old enough not to bother with the non-alcoholic stuff, or at least come up with passable fake IDs. A couple of guys had noticed the four schoolgirls and had approached, flirting drunkenly with them for a bit but being relatively harmless.

More accurately, they flirted with Sandy, Sam, and Li. Then they had noticed Joni...

"And who's this?" "Aw, she's so adorable." "Is this your pet? Is she allowed in here? What if she does something on the floor?"

That's about when the ear-tugging began.

Five seconds later, Sandy had "accidentally" stepped on one of their feet, and the other guy had needed to call the hospital for his buddy. Didn't change much. In vino veritas. And even sober, her own classmates had often responded similarly when meeting her for the first time.

Too young, too short, too inhuman... too cuddly. In a school with more than its share of angelic beauty, she was one of those obnoxiously cute cherubs.

She slumped off back to her room, holding her ears to her head the entire way.

She hated it. Simple enough emotion right? Everyone hates something, or atleast says they do. But she truely truely hated it.
The anger emotion. Gawd how she hated it. And lately there was so much of it her own emotions were in upheavel trying to sort everyone elses from hers.
She didn't think she could do it much longer. Keep her own seperate.
Why couldn't they just understand each other.... agree to disagree and the like?
Why couldn't she say anything to them? She just stood there like a bump on a log holding back her own twisted emotions.
She wanted to grab his hand and beg him not to go.... it wasn't time yet.
And all she could do was stand there and nod her head and say
"..ok... it's ok... yes i'll be waiting."
Even when He smiled and held her close and assured her everything was fine and he would come back for her soon, all she could do was nod and again repeat it over ,
"..ok... it's ok... yes i'll be waiting."

Inside her head she was screaming and crying
please dont do this , not yet... not now... Its too soon ...dont go
Outside she remained calm.
As she watched Him pick up his bags and lean down to kiss her one last time before getting into the awaiting sedan she grabbed his neck and hugged tightly. Tears started to form and she could hear him whispering quietly to her..

Its just for a little while Kali , its ok I promise everythings ok... I'll call you every night ok , please dont cry

He kissed her cheeks , wiped away the tears and waved sadly as he shut the car door.

She watched the car drive away and slowly slid down to the curb pulled her knees up close as she rested her chin on them ,and waited for the car to leave her sight.

Gathering herself together she rises and heads to the dorm room. This would be a long night.

Tamesis gritt her teeth as she passed by the lockers in the empty school hallways. The cold mist off her skin kept the air arround her cold.

Cold aways cold.... Tam repeted to her self gritting her teeth. The snowball haunted her mind again. All those couples dancing.. Touching, laughing with their friends. She'd came late. She felt unwelecome. Will I always be alone? She knew she had no real friends. A simple "Hello Tam" with out her saying it first. "Would you like to do something Tam?" A sigh exscaped her icy lips with a mist. She tightened her jaw and continued to her locker and dropped her backpack to the ground.

Maybe its cuz my mom keeps me at home... is that why no one seems to like me? I'm never arround... Her mother did try to let her do some partoling but now that the pits in her skin where gone her mother was always makin sure she was home after school. Tam wanted to find Barj... Tam wanted to see Tim... even though he was an prick to her at first. Tam wanted to have a date for the snowball. She almost asked one guy only to find out before hand he had a date. She glazed at her icy hands as she started stuffing books in to the back as frost fromed and disappeared on the covers. Ice formed on her eyes and dropped melting on to the clean tile of the school floor.

Well if I'm never arround, they won't miss me. She sallowed hard as she slamed her locker closed. She lifted her book bag upon her shoulder and started to walk down the empty hallways of Staint Joe's. Bitter thoughts ran threw her mind as she leaped away from the school that offered her friendship she never found. In the back of her mind she wondered... just wondered.. Did Stasis feel like this? Tam shoook her head. No probally not.. She at least has Jai..

Bryan opened his locker, like it was any other morning. The events of the past few days were weighing heavily on him. He was trying to balance the wonderful evening he had with against the problems his friends were having.

As the steel lock popped open, a slip of paper glided to the floor. He looked down at it and he smiled. "A love note from Nya", he thought happily as he picked up the folded message.

He unfolded it gently, anticapating the words inside. He began reading it but the look on his face quickly changed from delight to worry.

The letter was indeed filled with expressions of love and words of desire, however the sender was not who he imagined. In fact signed at the bottom of the letter was no name, merely two words that made his stomach tie itself in a knot.

"Not Nix"

Thinking to himself about the courage it took to pen this note and the risk in putting it in his locker. "I'm sorry." he thought to the author and though he felt horrible doing it, he crumbled the letter into a ball.

She was having the dream again.

And the strange thing, that she knew she was having a dream, so was it one of those strange glimpses of events unfolding, or just a dream?

And was anything ever 'just a dream?'

She saw the beings standing there, humanoid but stretched, like something from a Salvadore Dalli painting. Their skins were pellucid, mottled, shining like gold. Like gold. And their feet were covered by the waters in which they waded. The waters were as green as malachite, covered with heavy mist.

And the sky was as clear and hard as night in the countryside. Above them, in the air, a gibbous moon, full and red.

Not a moon, she thought, a planet. We are on a moon. That is Jupiter, there in the sky.

How long, she wondered. If this was a vision, how far in the future did it stretch?

Are you me? she wondered, moving towards the golden people in the pools. Are you of me? They were tall, like obelisks. They welcomed her to dip her feet in the water with them, to channel down the light and warmth to the pools, to see and approve of the life that swam around them. Tiny life. Tiny. Moving there in a soup of methane and water. The air was thin, crackling with radiation, and she knew that their golden skin was a shield, a protection.

Methane, she thought. And water. Creatures, even at the smallest dimension, wearing lacquered coats of gold, pearlescent white, and blue.

I will remember, she thought. I must tell Drix.

Amanda sat under the yellow in Atlas, looking over the city, letting her mask dangle from one finger hooked through an eyehole. Not thinking about it, she set it to spin around the finger with a small motion.

So, Daddy had shipped her off again. Ever since Mom died, he didn't know what to do with a daughter. So, it'd been one private school and then the next, until she inevitably got into trouble, either by using her powers or not. His answer was always the same, bring her home for a short while, a trip to counselling, school there in Irvine, until he didn't know what to do, then off to a new school. Always with new clothing, and gadgets, and a new, higher credit limit on her cards. If he couldn't do anything to spend time with her, he sure tried to buy her happiness, or silence, Amanda wasn't sure which.

She grinned thinking about the last school, and the trouble that got her landed here. Courtney McMillan (or McMillions as everyone called her) was making life hell, always commenting on Amanda's clothing or jewelry or shoes. Those things she could take, Courtney was a fashion nightmare anyway. Then she started talking about how at least her Daddy paid attention to her, and Amanda had had enough. Perfect little Courtney, with her perfect little face and that perfect little nose that she used to hold up in the air at people. All it took was a perfectly timed boost, changing Courtney's potential energy into kinetic as she was walking to her locker. The solid CLANG as Courtney ran face first into the bank of lockers before she could compensate for the new speed was music to Amanda's ears. Amanda was sure that Courtney's father would pay to have Courtney's perfectly smashed nose fixed, but still, it was sooooooo satisfying. Unfortunately, people had noticed that Amanda used her powers, and she was expelled.

So, new school, Amex in her pocket, she was here. At least here she could use her powers and not be thought of as weird.
