Not every castle is made of stone nor set upon a hill....

Post by Merin »

Having just recently been told by Summer about getting a room on campus, Merin runs out to a very old, beat up, run down apartment building that looks just short of being condemed. Slowing down from her super speed skipping, she creeps up to the front door and peeks around the edge to see if anyone is in the front entrance.

Seeing no one she quickly scurries up two flights of stairs to one of the apartment doors on the third floor. Wiggling the door handel for a moment gets the poor, broken lock to give way and Merin walks into the single room apartment and looks around.

To anyone standing behind Merin they would see a very small room, hardly bigger than a average guest bedroom. The wooden plank floors are cracked and warped in several places....a large oversized pillow and several torn blankets lay on the floor. Off in the corner rests a mini fridge atop which rests a hot plate. In another corner sits a tiny black and white television. Scarce clothing can be found around the room. The only sign that a child may live here is the very worn, used teddy bear that sits on the large pillow.[/i]

Reaching under her big pillow, Merin pulls out a beat up note book and starts doing her homework while she waits for Silme to come home (or maybe one of her spiffy friends from school)

Not long after Merin starts tinkering with her homework, she hears the door handel to the apartment start to rattle. Immediatly her little body tenses up and she grabs Miss Kitty and Mister Bear and quickly scampers into the tiny bathroom. Hopping into the tub (which takes up the vast majority of the space in the bathroom) she peeks around the door frame, waits, and watches....

A few moments later a very tired looking Sîlmë walks into the apartment carrying a small shopping bag. Glancing around she notes the abscence of Merin's teddy bear...

To the outside observer the next thing you would hear would sound very curious and if you were a active easedropper, very frustrating...

Sîlmë speaks in a generally unknown languge. It has a highly musical and fluid sound to it and could probably be described as pretty.

"Miire honey? It's just me. I brought you some dinner sweetie."

Sîlmë hears a giggle from the direction of the bathroom and just has enough time to lift up the shopping bag out of the way before becoming the reciving end of a little blond-copper haired huggle missile.

Giggling happyily, Merin looks up at Sîlmë and responds in the same curious language...

"Oooo... cookies maybe?"

Looking a little guilty, Sîlmë shakes her head and hugs Merin...

"Sorry honey... no cookies today. They didn't have any of the ingrediants on sale and all the premade ones cost to much. We get instant noodles again tonight. Is that okay?"

Merin's giggle sounds only slightly less happy when she replies...

"Okie dokie big sissy! Umm... can I have the beef one?"

Sîlmë nods, smiling. She walks into the bathroom and fills up a beat up sauce pan with water. Carring it back out ti the main room she sets it on the hot plate and looks over at Merin...

"Okay honey, do your thing."

A moment later Merin touches the pan and lets off a burst of greenish light. Almost instantly the water starts to boil and the two wait for dinner to be ready...

(( If anyone else wants to post, go ahead. Merin has her little comm thingy and her address is technicly in the school archives. And she forgot about telling Sîlmë hehe ))

The long, black Caddy pulled up, outside the ramshackle apartment building not long before Silme arrived, and Jason, peers out of the tinted windows at the beat up brownstone. I knew it was bad, but this is beyond what I expected. Jason thought, and his admiration for the little girl grew. How could she always be so happy and up beat? He shook his head, simply amazed at her. He sat in the car for a while, not sure of...anything anymore.

Doug looked back over the partition at the young star. "We're here, Jase, you sure this is the right place?"

Jason looked at piece of photocopied paper that had Meri's address on it. "Yeah, that's what the records say, and the woman that just came in, has to be related to Meri. I've never seen anyone else move like Meri till now."

"Well, what do you want to do? You've been sitting here for about ten minutes. The food will stay warm for a bit longer in the trunk insulator, but it's going to get cold before too long, Jase."

Jason fidgeted. It seemed so easy, just a good, although late, Thanksgiving style dinner. Turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and the rest. Now though, he didn't want to give them one meal and then have them wonder if it would ever happen again. He thought about it for a bit, and then his smile grew on his face.

Doug watched that smile and gave a small one himself, "Uh oh, I know that look, you're hatching some sort of crazy plan."

"Huh?" Jason grinned like the Cheshire cat, "When have I ev....Okay, yeah, but not this time. This time I think I have it right, at least I hope so. It just looks like they could use a leg up, ya know? Meri's great, and if her Mom or sister or whomever that was is the same, if they just get a break, they'll do fine." Jason pulled down a side panel in the car, and accessed the laptop, hooking into the broadband wireless connection he started to work. "Doug, I need you to take the food up to them." He pulled out a card, and hastily scrawled something on it. "Give this to the older girl, and please don't mention that I sent the food, okay?"

"Jason, that's ridiculous, they should know."

"Seriously, Doug, don't mention my name, okay?"

Doug hid his smile well, "Okay, Jase, have it your way."

Doug left the car with the food, and made his way into the building. He headed to the elevator, making the car call, and waited. Soon, it became evident that the elevator wasn't working at all, so he resigned himself to using the stairs, food in tow. The burden was easy for Doug to carry, but the ominous creak, and crack of the stairs as he climbed gave him pause. After two flights, he let out a breath he didn't know he was holding.

He found the door and knocked politely. In a moment, Silme answered the door a crack, chain still connected. "Hello?"

"Hello, m'am. My employer wanted me to send these things up to you." Doug held up the bags with the food, and the unmistakable smell wafted from the bags. "He wasn't sure what your tastes ran to, so I'm afraid there's a little bit of everything." Doug smiled, and the lines at his eyes crinkled in the disarming fashion that he had. Doug HAD followed the directions mostly, but knew that turkey may not be on everyone's list, so had purchased other food as well, for a more vegetarian diet if they needed.

Silme looked out at the stranger, wary. "Who is your employer?"

"He wished to remain anonymous, but did give me a card to give you." Doug looked Silme in the eye, a non threatening smile lighting his face. "Is there anyplace inside that I can set these down? Not that they're heavy mind you, but they are awkward, and I'd hate to set them down on the floor outside here."

Silme thought a moment and relented, opening the door. Doug waited till she invited him in, even after she opened the door, and with a quick thank you, came in and set the food down, smiling at Meri, with a wink, and Meri returned the smile, wide eyed. The kid was right, she's a doll.

Doug reached into his coat pocket and handed her the card. "Not sure what that's all about, but he wanted you to have it." Doug grinned at them both, and said very point of factly, "Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back down to the car. My employer is waiting." He winked at them both, and looked towards the window, as he excused himself and shut the door.

Silme chuckled at the sly man and went to the window, Meri close by her side. They both saw the black car, and their keen eyes had no trouble making out Doug as he slid into the driver's seat, nor did they have trouble making out the license plate as Doug made a VERY deliberate 3 point turn.

Having fairly thin walls facing the hallways, Doug can make out the sound of whatever language Merin and Sîlmë are speaking as he leaves....

As the car drives away, Sîlmë stares after, her and Merin giggling as the car made several curious looking turns.

"Big sissy? Maybes the big metal horsey is confuzzled.... It is going round and round and round."

Sîlmë looks down at Merin and smiles, "No Miire, I think they want us to know who it is....probably with that odd branding on the metal beasts read end. I have seen nearly all the beasts have such. Do you know what they mean?"

Merin shakes her head and stands on her tip toes to try and look at the card, "Nu uh... I don't know what those silly letters mean.... what is the little card thingy?"

Sîlmë looks over the card closely for several moments before handing it to Merin, "I'm not sure Miire. I think it is offering us something? Can you read it?"

Merin looks at the card and giggles, "I think it says it wants to give big sissy a job?"

Sîlmë nods and her and Merin sit down and very quickly devour much of the food brought up by Mr. Doug person.

Some time later, Sîlmë stares at the numbers on the card infront of her and looks over at Merin;

"Mirrie, do you know someone with one of those magic talking boxes? There is a number on here and I think it is a puzzle or some such."

Merin looks thoughtful for a second before responding, "Maybes Miss Summer? But I am not sures how to find her....."

Summer wasn't exactly having a good time finding this address. For one, someone took it. TWO, someone took it off school records and THREE, the buses she needed to take were gone long before she got there. The place was a dump. No, it gave dumps a bad name, it was so bad. The weather had turned cold and the only thing she had to keep her warm was her black hoody and her paper thing dress pants which sucked. With a wind chill in the single digits, it meant she needed sunlight to keep herself warm and the clouds had hindered that. Thus, Summer was shivering, head to toe.

At least she found the apartment finally. It was a dump, it was something close to being condemned but it was still a building and a building was shelter. She opened the door, it was bent on its hinge, hanging like a leaf on a branch. The inside looked better than the outside, but that's only because the outside had to deal with weather. The graffitti and trash on the floor only made her resolve that much stronger. Still, in the air lingered turkey, it was Thanksgiving afterall.

The address named apartment F as the right one she trekked up the stairs towards the third floor and set down on the landing. Her body was stil shivering, not as bad but still she was cold. She needed some sort of heat lamp or UV lens to balance her body temp faster. She walked tot he door, rubbed her arms trying to create friction. She knocked on the apartment door.

Hearing the knock on the door, Sîlmë walked over and looked through the peep hole. Not really reconizing who it was from the distorted image she asks and when Summer replies, lets her in.

Still dressed in her work clothes (waitress in a casino), Sîlmë speaks to Summer, "Hello Miss Summer. Can I help you?"

Merin promptly gets excited and jump-hugs Summer; "Miss Summers! Yaaaaaay! Ooo... we was juz wonderin' hows ta find ya.... is you a mind talker? Cuz we needs one of dem talkin' boxes wif da numbers on. See see? A sneaky man person comes an' gives it ta bigs sissy...."

Merin points at the card. Written on it is the following:

*************************
Miss,

I'd like to extend this to you as a way of invitation. I know Meri, and if you are at all as personable as she is, you both have a way with people. I need people like that in my business. I can't promise you a large paycheck, but certainly enough to help with you and Meri. If you are interested, call the number on the reverse. If not, please accept the food as my gift.

The flip side has the name Berezhin Publicity printed on it, and a phone number.

"First, I need something warm to drink, I'm freezing." Summer answered with Merin attached to her leg.

A few minutes and a hot cup of hot chocolate later, Summer was looking at the business card. She was in her tee shirt in the living room with all the lights turned on. While her skin sucked up the existential ambient light, her eyes were narrowed at the card, inspecting the print, the weight of the paper, the density of the ink.

"You don't know who gave it to you?" Summer asked.

Merin and Silme' were both eating the dinner after Summer checked it. They both shook their heads.

She pulled out her cell phone, dialed the number right quick and sat back in the chair.

The voice of a cheery woman answered the other end "Berezhin Publicity, Jennifer speaking, can I help you?

Summer sighed, wading through a bureaucracy was not what she had in mind when she called. "Yeah, I've got a card here that says to call."

"Your name please?"

"Summer Vigil"

"I'm sorry, there's no listing for an expected call from a Summer Vigil on this number. I can redirect you to the main number if you like."

Summer gritted her teeth, no way was she going to get blocked by some receptionist. "I'm calling on behalf of Merin and Silme Genoell."

"Ah, yes there is a call expected from Ms Genoell. If you could put her on the line, I'll have her patched through immediately."

Summer sighed, growing more agitated by the moment, "I said I was calling on behalf of the Genoell's"

"I understand, but this is really a matter between Ms Genoell and my employer. Unless of course you represent legal council for Ms Genoell, in which case we can have our attorneys contact you to set up a meeting." There was a momentary pause "But notes here say that legal council is most likely not needed. So if you could put Ms Genoell on the line, I'm sure we can have this cleared up in a few moments."
