In front of Joni's door sat a small crystal white rose in a vase with a note attached saying

A rose like any other is just a rose,
A rose unlike any other may smell just as sweet,
A rose born of pain may still blossom,
A rose born of love may still fall,

A rose of red depicts love,
A rose of red depicts passion,
A rose of red depicts heat,
A rose of red depicts care,

A rose of any other color may still be a rose
A rose of any other smell may still be a rose
A rose of any other size may still be a rose
A rose of anything like you there can never be one so perfect

Joni stared at the vase in her hands. She turned the card over a few times... no signature. She wasn't sure if it was better this way; this way she could pretend it was from someone else, or for someone else, or both. But somehow she doubted it.

She chewed on her lip a little. Then she left it on Sam's desk and removed the card, which she crumpled up and tossed in the wastebasket. Let Sam think Jason had dropped it off. But Joni'd already turned Mana down once; why would he think things would have improved now?

She took a seat and began work on her assignment.

...and her arm snaked back into the trash and dug out the note. A bit of smoothing and it went in her desk drawer instead. God, you're a sap, Joni...

Dear Joni,

I am writing you this letter because I can not bear to see you in person and I feel you really dont want to see me at all. I am sorry for all the pain and hurt I have caused you. I know it will never be enough to make up for what I allowed myself to do but its all I can offer at this time.
I ask not for forgiveness because I can not be forgiven. I ask only that you understand that I am truely and deeply sorry. If you wish to talk with me again I will do so if you wish to be friends again I will but if you also choose to discontenue any further contact with myself I will understand.
I do want you to know that I care for you as a good friend and would like to someday regain that friendship. I know that day if or when it comes wont be soon. Do know this: should you ever need anything, anything at all I will ALWAYS be at your call. I will do anything I can for you. Not to make up for what Ive done but to try to be a friend to you. If you ever wish to ask for it my life is yours. That is the least I can offer for my atonement. Again for all the pain and suffering I have caused you I am forever sorry.
