**EXTRA CREDIT** (PM ME FIRST)
(PLEASE SEE THE DISCUSSION THREAD IN THE ROLEPLAY CHAT SECTION)
**EXTRA CREDIT**
The toughest "test" you'll take in high school!!
In recognition of pioneer spirit week, the history department of St. Joes is putting together a very special extra credit assignment for all interested students.
Come test your skills against nature as we cover 27 miles by foot in 48 hours. During this excursion, you'll survive off the land, building shelter, gathering food, water, and recreating some of the hardships suffered by the original settlers of the New Hampshire area.
**ANY POWERS/SPECIAL ABILITIES ARE OFF LIMITS FOR THE ENTIRE 48 HOURS**
Any student found not in compliance to the above will not receive any credit for the assignment.
Interested students should contact Mr. Norris in the History department to sign up and determine if eligible. Trip size is limited, so sign up early!

Sam read the notice three times before looking down at the test paper marked with a C+. History was usually her ace in the hole subject, the one that helped her boost her overall GPA. It wasn't that she didn't know the material, she just had been preoccupied and didn't put in the few hours studying that it would've taken. And besides, this was what, a hike? Hikes were always a blast. Okay, there was no powers, none of hers really screamed wilderness survival anyway. Unless a tree fell in her direction. She hoped it wouldn't turn into one of those "would it make a sound?" things. Turning from the bulletin board, she went straight to Mr. Norris' classroom, to make sure to be amongst the students going.
"Showing your pioneer spirit, Miss Douglas?" He asked with a chuckle, handing her a clip board with a few names already written.
"Yes, sir." She replied with a smile. "As long as it doesn't involve me having to wear anything looking like it came off the set of Little House." The teacher let out another slight laugh.
"No, no nothing like that. Jeans, a sweatshirt and hiking boots will be fine. We'll be meeting outside of the gym next Saturday morning at 3:00, so I'll see you there, bright eyed and bushy tailed."
"My tail will be there." She agreed, accepting the packet detailing the excursion from him. "As far as how bright my eyes will be is still questionable. Thank you, Mr. Norris."
She smiled as she left the office, looking down the hallway. A hike could be a lot of fun, and besides, what could possibly go wrong? The thought made her stop briefly in her tracks and raise an eyebrow before heading out to meet Eddie for lunch.

Eddie read over the notice before remembering that he'd fallen behind on his work in history. This could have been just the thing he needed except for one minor detail, the no powers rule. He decided he wanted to talk to Mr. Norris about it anyway.
---
Eddie arrived in the history office to find Mr. Norris at his desk reviewing some papers. "Mr. Norris, can I talk with you a sec?" he questioned, slightly uneased about the situation.
"Mister Trenton, I was hoping you'd show up. What's on your mind?" the teacher asked, a slight smirk across his face.
"Well sir, I'd like to go on this extra credit trip, but I have a slight problem I need to ask you about."
"What's that, Eddie?" Mr. Norris asked hopefully
"Well, it's the whole no power thing, I can't really stop using telepathy, it's pretty much the only way I can talk to people." said Eddie, still uneasy about potentally not being able to go.
"I could see where that would be a problem. Here's what I'm going to do, I'm going to let you sign up for it, I'll think of something and get back to you before we head out. Sound good?"
Eddie smirked at the man's optimism "That sounds great sir, thank you."
Mr. Norris handed Eddie a clipboard to sign, he did so before leaving the office with a slight grin.

"Mr. Norris! Mr. Norris!"
The teacher turned to look, a little startled as the blond haired girl charged up to him in the hallway. She skidded to a stop in front of him, chest heaving and a piece of paper clutched in one hand.
"Yes? Uh... Statis, isn't it?" She wasn't in any of his classes but he was pretty sure he remembered the name.
"Stasis. Or Stasi. Whatever. Hey Mr. Norris, you still have any space left in this?" The girl thrust the paper under his nose. By crossing his eyes he was able to partially make out the top header for his pioneer excursion flyer. He smiled.
"Yes actually, there are still a couple of open spots. Are you interested?"
"Ayuh! You have no idea! Extra credit and no school for two days? I'm gonna be the best pioneer you got!" The slim form cracked the biggest smile he'd seen yet, still a little chipmunk cheeked from what had to have been a sprint through the halls. "What do I do next? Where do I sign?"
He indicated with a hand, not sure if he should say something about the overly honest yet tactless answer. "I'm sure that's the spirit that got our founders through the early years," he said diplomatically. "I'm just on my way to set up the next class so come with me and I'll give you the handouts detailing what you need to bring with you. Did you have any questions?"
The girl fell into step with him. She was tall enough not to have to stretch her legs but the bounce from her obvious excitement gave her an odd hopping rabbit motion. "Well, the whole no power thing. I mean, not to like, say anything, but how will you know? And there's stuff you can't just turn off either. I mean," she babbled, "its not like if it gets cold at night that I'm really gonna notice."
He suppressed a smile. "We believe in the honor system?"
"Ah yeh?" she said. "Well, okay." She sounded doubtful though.
"You let us worry about how we'll make sure everyone plays by the rules. I'm sure you'll learn a lot from the trip."
He opened the door and motioned her ahead. At this rate he'd have his field trip filled by the end of the day.

She stared at the history classroom, which had been turned into some sort of hippy co-op. There were bags of farina, chickpeas, dried fruit, and beef jerky, about one pound of food per person, per day. Rolls of toilet paper. One tin mess kit for every three people. Liters of water-bottles. Flint-magnesium fire sticks, one kit for every three people. Four or five trowels. Four large oil-treated canvas tarps that looked like they'd come out of the bad side of WWI. And a slew of other supplies for the packs.
"Wow," she said, surveying the materials. She inspected the food supplies more closely. "No high-fat foods. Not much sugar. You're really out to make us suffer, huh, Mr. Norris? There's, what, about 1000 calories per person per day? Oh, wow. That's not nearly enough. And half of these guys are used to flying everywhere, not hiking. Oh, wow."
"It will provide some motivation. After all, we're trying to recreate pioneering conditions here. It will give you all just a taste of attempting to live off the land--and motivation to hunt and gather."
Nennya nodded. "But no rifles? I thought the pioneers all had guns, to shoot animals and aboriginees?" Grinning, she picked up the first of a series of heavy ziplock bags and began measuring out the farina and chickpeas, using a metal scoop. Mr. Norris was already busy with the dried fruit and jerky.
"Well, Miss Drixxen, unfortunately, there aren't many left to shoot."
"Bears," Nennya muttered, "And coyotes. And psycho mountain men. Ever see that movie Deliverance? Hm. Will we not get credit if we get attacked by coyotes or bears or mountain men and we have to use our powers?"
Mr. Norris laughed. "I suppose not. Especially if they're going after me."
Nennya nodded, and Mr. Norris, finished with the meat and fruit, picked up a stack of photocopies, and put them in the tray attached to his door. It detailed the supplies which students were required to bring on their own, as well as a list of prohibited items.
Nennya carefully packed her backframe with her hiking kit, and hoisted it carefully on her back. "That feels like about ... hmm... six kilos? fifteen pounds? And mine's a heavy one. It won't kill them, but they're going to be crying when they lug it on the next morning. You're a closet sadist, huh, Mr. Norris?" She grinned at the history teacher again, adjusted the straps, distributing the weight more evenly over her shoulders. Mr. Norris was looking at her oddly.
"Something tells me I underestimated your experience when you volunteered to help prepare for this expedition, Miss Drixxen. How long have you been doing this sort of thing?"
"An overland hike with a pack? Uh-uh, never. But I've gone on the rough in the Alps when it suited me. Like, when my brothers were making me annoyed. But no pack. No shoes, even. Just me and some sad little rabbits that never got home to their burrows. And no one along for the journey, to take care of. Don't worry. I'm really going to earn this extra credit." She sloughed her backframe and began the meticulous process of stacking the pack-ready kits in neat rows of bundles.
"This is going to be something," she said. "Really something."

Standing reading the latest posts on the bulletin board , one particular flier caught Kali's eye .
camping trip eh... back to basics... no powers...I could so do this!
she thought to herself.
Quickly she made her way down the crowded hallway to the History classroom.
As she entered Mr Norris looked up from his paperwork with a friendly smile.
"Hello there Kali, what brings you around? Another chip basket to deliver?"
" no.. No chips today but Mr. Norris? Can I come too? pleeeaaaaseeeee!!
her dark eyes reflecting like a sad puppys.
The teacher chuckled a moment then asked,
" Are you sure Kali? It wont be like camping out in the dorms you know? No soda machines... no chips" he pointed at the supplies stacker neatly around the room.
"what you see here is all there will be other than what you can gather and make yourself. Sure you're up to that?"
" I am totally sure Mr Norris... I realllly want to go and i promise I can do this!" She gave her best pouty look and then grinned as he nodded.
" ok Kali.. deal lets see how you fair without your soda and chips"
Kali squeeled loudly as she jumped up and down .
"Thank you Mr Norris thank you!!"
She left the room with more bounce in her step.
She hadn't been camping since before she came to St Joes. This would be just like old times... almost.

Vesper poked her head into the room after the last class of the day, hoping to catch Mr. Norris before he left. Finding him absorbed in something on his desk, she knocked quietly on the door.
“Vesper? Come on in.”
“Mr. Norris?” She pulled a crumpled bit of paper from a pocket and tried without great success to straighten it out again. “I saw this flyer… I was kinda hopin’ it wasn’t full yet.” She held it out for inspection, almost holding her breath.
“The pioneer spirit field trip? No, it’s not full yet.” He smiled as he pulled forth the clipboard that was filling with student names. “If you’d like to sign up…” He held the clipboard forth, leaving the question hanging between them.
“It’ll be nice to learn somethin’ without havin’ to memorize a lotta dates and places…” She started to grin, but faltered, realizing what she had just said. “Sorry… Guess that came out wrong.”
Mr. Norris chuckled. “That’s alright. Maybe we can find out if there’s a little more to history than names and dates.”
“Alright. I’ll be lookin’ forward to it!”
After adding her name to the list, Vesper left the room. This would be fun, right? After all, she had lived on her own for a few months. What did nature have to throw at her that she hadn’t already seen?

Walking up to Mr. Norris, ears drooped low Raphael held out the flier.
"Hello, erm Raphael was it?" he chuckled as the metallic cat nodded. "You're doing excetionaly well in history, why would you wise to go?"
"Well I wish to get outside and see more of the world...But if there is not anymore room I would stay behind for someone who needs it more then I" he said sollemly.
"No, it's fine! We still got lots of room. You would be welcome to come and join in!." He patted Raph on the back to exclaim his point.
"Also, Um, sir? The 'No powers" mention? as you can see I have a small issue with that..." he let his tail swing forward to point out his newest change.
"I see, However as long as you don't fly or claw the tents you should be fine." Mr. Norris smiled.
"Thank you sir. I hope to have an enjoyable experince out there with everyone." Raph smiled and walked off his ears held high and his tail swinging happily.

Nick walks into the classroom, looking for the teacher in charge of the extra credit project. Backpacks and other things for the trip were stacked against the walls. Mr Norris was at his desk, looking over some papers.
"Mr Norris? About that Pioneer Spirit Field Trip. Is there still time to sign up for it?"
Glancing over the papers, Mr. Norris looks at his latest prospective volunteer. "Yes, there's still room for a few more. Care to sign up?"
"Yes!" Nick responds, "It sounds like a great challenge and I'm sure I'll learn a lot on this trip."
"Well, then. Here you go," Mr. Norris says while handing Nick the required paperwork. "Ever do anything like this before?"
Nick responds while filling in the papers, "I went to the YMCA summer camp once when I was younger but I'm from the city. I mean New York. I read a Boy Scout handbook a while back and I'm sure I can find all kinds of good information on the internet."
"You know there will be no internet on this trip, right?"
"Yes, Mr Norris. I figured I'd look it up before we started to see how to do things. It'll be great!" he says while handing back the sign up sheet.
"Very well. Take one of the information sheets and I'll see you at the start of the trip."
Watching the enthusiastic student leave his room, Mr. Norris could only shake his head with amusement.

What interested gabe most about the flier wasn't the extra credit opportunity, it wasn't even the idea of trying to rough it for a while without benefit of supernatural abilities, and though the idea of getting away for a while to where dinner was a more pressing concern than saving the world appealed, it was something even more primal: In his entire fourteen years of life, he'd never been outside the city limits.
Fourteen years, and the closest he'd ever come to nature proper was Perez park as a child, before the gangs took it over.
He was SO going to be there.
He finally managed to catch Mr. Norris in the teacher's lounge. On hallowed ground, where students didn't dare tread.
He knocked on the door, "uh, Hello? Mr. Norris?" he asked, peeking around the door tentatively. Mr. Norris looked up from a plate of microwaved lasanga. "yes?"
"Uh, I-hope-I'm-not-interrupting-but-I-was-wondering-if-the-field-trip-had-room?" Gabe asked in one long word, more or less, then paused for breath.
"oh, that, yes, we have some room yet, looking to join up."
"I'd like that very much sir." Gabe said.
"Well, stop by my office to pick up the paper later, I'll have it ready for you."
Gabe nodded and dissapeared back around the frame.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gabe was trying to remember the last four digits of his student ID, while he worked his way through a stack of paperwork.
"So, you ever do anything like this before?" Mr. Norris asked.
"4051? 4150? oh, no," gabe said, looking up, "I've uh, never actually been outside of Paragon before."
Mr. Norris nodded in appreciation, "well, it'll be different that's for sure."
Gabe smiled, "well, I think it will be nice in a way, nothing to worry about, well, practical concerns, you know? To be able to not think about schoolwork, or, you know, other stuff."
Mr. Norris smiled slightly, "That's the spirit! Now, I just need you to fill out this double-endemnity in triplicate, initial here, here, here and put the date right... here."

Now, I just need you to fill out this double-endemnity in triplicate, initial here, here, here and put the date right... here."
"Mr. DuBois." Oby heard that and knew it had to be a teacher. He turned and saw Mr. Norris, hands on hips looking at him.
"Uh...yeah?"
"Mr. DuBois, while your grades are suitable and will certainly see you pass your classes, you would do well to seek out some extra credit."
Oby scoffed, "Yeah, I'll get right on that." He looked at Norris, smirking, "No, really, what did you want?"
"I think you would do well to join us this weekend."
"Oh, yeah, the nature hike thing. Some of the guys from the baseball team were talking about that." Oby thought about it. Sam, Gabe, and Ves were talking about it. "27 miles, two days, right?" Norris nodded. "We all have to stay in a nice neat little pack?"
"There's not any strict rule that says you have to, but that would be preferred."
Oby smiled crooked, "I'll set a nice pace for everyone to keep up with."

A long pause passed between them Jay narrowed his eyes and a moment he capitualted.

Randy tapped gently on the glass on the door to Mr. Norris' classroom. He had hoped to catch him during the day, but he hadn't found the opportunity. When he saw the slip of paper tacked to the bulletin board advertising the hiking trip he immediately wanted to go. The distance they had to hike didn't really scare him, and it wasn't the extra credit that excited him: his grades weren't bad, really, B's in math and science, C's in English and history, but more importantly they didn't really matter to him. The marks seemed arbitrary and only dimly related to any actual working knowledge of the subjects at hand.
Two whole days out of the city, away from the smog and cloying closeness of voices and people always pressing in for room. He would go to Perez Park sometimes, the closest thing to nature Paragon had to offer. He would shift forms and linger in a tree, letting the scents of the place wash over him, the decaying leaf litter, the plants in bloom, the animal scents, but he would catch a whiff of clockwork grease or sulfur from some forbidden Circle ritual and the whole experience would be ruined, his connection to the living, breathing earth shot to pieces.
Randy wanted that connection back, just to know it still existed.
"Come in."
Randy could tell Mr. Norris was eating by the smell in the air: fettuccine alfredo. Something in it—chicken. He stuck his head around the door frame and entered.
"Hey, Mr. Norris." Randy ambled up to Mr. Norris' desk. Mr. Norris offered him a seat with a shake of his head and he took it.
"I saw that extra credit thing, the hiking trip."
Mr. Norris paused thoughtfully, smiled, pushed his late lunch (or early supper, maybe) to the side. "Yes, I'm glad to see you taking some more initiative about your grades, Randy. I know you could be doing a lot better than you're doing."
"So there's still room?" Randy asked hopefully, leaning forward in his chair.
"Just a couple of slots, but I'd love to have you along. Have you ever gone out on any extended nature trips before?" Mr. Norris asked.
Randy dropped his head to the side in an entirely unconscious canine gesture of curiosity. "I'm a werewolf," he said by way of explanation. The unintended implication: duh. Mr. Norris didn't seem put off as much as surprised.
"Oh! Of course, of course! Well, it will be good to have someone around who knows so well what they're doing. And you're okay not using powers for the weekend?"
Randy nodded thoughtfully. "Yeah, about that. My shifting... I mean, that's not really a special power, exactly. That's just what garou do." His phasing into the spirit world—that was definitely a special power in his mind, and he'd gladly forswear using it for a weekend.
Mr. Norris pursed his lips in thought. "Mm. That's a good point. Still, this exercise is about living the pioneer experience. It's about experiencing the struggles of being a limited human being in the wild. I would really like you to come, but you'll have to pretend you're fully human for the weekend—no shifting."
"But--" Sounds muted, scents dulled. Being regulated only to his human form would be like seeing a great painting while wearing sunglasses, like hearing a symphony with earplugs in. Mr. Norris looked up at him expectantly, not really interrupting, just waiting patiently, seeing that Randy was in thought. He couldn't explain himself to Mr. Norris.
"Okay, I'll do it. Sign me up."
His word bound him to being a boy for a weekend, but he had to go. He couldn't be here any longer, not when he had a chance for respite.

03:00 - Surviving the Yellow Bus
03:00 The students, some bleary eyed, some raring to go, and some looking like they had no idea what was to come stood lined up with their canvas packs as Sister Mary Thomas pulled up in the orange-yellow school bus. With a hissing sound, the double doors opened and the students filed in, chatter filling the air as they filled the dark green vinyl seats. The bus was empty enough for each of them to choose their own seat, the back of the bus proving to be the most desirable. Most students sat sideways to stretch their legs across the bench for the duration of the trip up to New Hampshire, forming up in little groups and talking sometimes loudly amongst themselves.
The bus made another quick stop in front of the church itself to pick up the three members of the parish who had graciously volunteered their time to go along on the field trip acting as chaperones.
First on was Mrs. Letty Sanchez, also known to the hero community as Shadow Storm. Ms. Sanchez often volunteered her time to St. Joseph students who, like herself, had the unique ability to manipulate weather conditions. She smiled warmly at the students, tossing a nod to Mr. Norris before settling into one of the front seats.
Behind her was Mr. RJ Burton, a rugged looking man in his early forties. Mr. Burton also volunteered often at the school, helping out with several of the sports teams. A fairly loud and sometimes overbearing man, he was often seen in the stands rooting on the teams and reliving his glory days as a collegiate athlete.
“Helllllo Flyers!” He boomed, his voice echoing through the bus as he plopped down unceremoniously in the seat behind Ms. Sanchez.
Finally stepping aboard was Mr. Stanley Wallace, a scrawny looking man barely over five foot five. His gear from head to toe looked brand new, as if he’d shopped expressly for the trip. Mr. Wallace also helped out with St. Joseph’s functions, running several Chinese Auctions and Bingo tournaments. He tripped on the final step of the bus, readjusting his oversized hat on his undersized head to enable him to see better. Several of the students snickered, but Mr. Wallace didn’t seem to let it phase him. Ms. Sanchez hastily put her pack on the seat next to her, causing him to choose a seat across from Mr. Burton.
The bus idled for a moment as Mr. Norris rechecked the names on his list, making sure everyone was on board.
"Last chance, ladies and gents, anyone having second thoughts?" He was met with everything from overconfident heckling to enthusiastic "no sir!" responses, causing the history professor to smile. "In that case, if you'd do the honors, Sister Mary-Thomas, we can get this show on the road."
On cue, Sister Mary Thomas closed the bus doors with another hiss, and the orange-yellow bus set out towards the highway, signifying the start of the field trip.

Rick looked out the window as they headed towards there destination. The bus actually had more room than he thought there would be. He stretched out his legs. He was whearing a black T-shirt and camo jeans with combat boots. Giving out a big yawn he but his head on the window and took a nap until they got there.
Cant go wrong with a word like spelunking!
