(Stasis Kiss, Eddie Amplitude, Kali Jade, Nox Veratis, Vesper Fiend and Sam, Special Guest stars Mr. RJ Burton and Mr. Stanley Wallace. Following the Miles Emerson Trail)
08:00Sam was being productive. She'd commandeered Eddie's slate board to play a few quick games of Tic-Tac-Toe with Ves.
She'd already managed to lose more games than she wanted to admit to - who knew that a game composed of a couple of squiggles could be so tough? There had to be a trick to it but if there was, Vesper wasn't telling. Sam bent her head and studied the board again, even as Mr. Norris started to call out to the straggling kids, trying to get them all to pay attention. She confidently put down an X in what seemed like a good spot. The other girl promptly countered with a devious side attack.
"You realize if I lose this game too I'm gonna to start crying and carrying on, and everybody is going to come over and ask what's wrong and I'll tell them that you've discovered the secret of immortality but you won't share and while you're busy fending them all off, I'm going to change your move to something that I like better."
Ves laughed. "You do that. Chalk up, Sherlock." As Sam tried to figure out which move was the one least likely to spell disaster, Ves called out over her shoulder, obviously trying not to be loud enough to be called to task by Mr. Norris. "Nick. Nick. It'll work better if'n you hold it by the keyloop."
A couple of feet away, the older boy was trying desperately to loop his free arm through strap of his backpack. He looked a whole lot like a German Shepherd chasing it’s tail; at least if the German Shepherd in question was pushing six feet of lazy muscle. Sam spared a moment from her own predicament to chuckle. Hard to believe someone all thumbs like Nox was all fists and fury in a fight, but it was true.
Torture devices disguised as children's games aside, Vesper had been bonus. Almost from the moment the other girl had arrived at the school, the two of them had become fast friends. A little quiet and withdrawn at first, Sam quickly found out Ves had a great attitude and an even better sense of humor. She was always willing to help out.
When Mr. Norris called out the team assignments, it was almost enough to erase the agony of defeat as Vesper scrubbed off another game. Sam looked around and realized that while she'd known almost everybody on the the bus, this was going to be a lot of fun. For one thing, it turned out Ves would be with her.
For a second thing, she'd lucked out and gotten Eddie as well, a double bonus. For his own self, of course, but also for the chalkboard. Maybe she could figure out how to turn the tables over the course of the next couple of days.
As if on cue he pointed to his slate board with a hand-it-over sign as people started to shuffle into their groups, hauling their 1700s gear. Truth be told, it felt off trying not to "talk" to him via telepathy and she could only imagine how much worse it was on his end. He gave her a quick wink and she took that as a sign that random thought had made it through. Laughing a little, she mock-pretended to not know what he was asking for; pointing to her pack, a nearby rock and Vesper while trying to maintain a look of innocence. Eddie's smile grew more and more crooked as he tapped his foot.
She relented finally and handed the board and chalk over with a flourish. He promptly wrote "thanks!". For a guy, his handwriting was actually pretty neat. He offered her a hand up then, taking an extra second to give it a squeeze and offer a warm smile before offering it to Ves as well. The gesture was small but sweet. Even before they became more than friends, he always was considerate like that.
Kali and Stasi were a little off to themselves but walking over towards Mr. Wallace who was waving his arms as if trying to herd them all long distance. It was hard to tell but it looked like Kali was already making cooing noises at the robo-baby. She'd commandeered that thing almost as soon as it had appeared to the relief of everybody else. It was hard to describe, but the dark-haired girl just had a comforting presence about her. Which was sort of weird if you thought about it, since Kali didn't seem to eat anything other chips and cola and should have been bouncing off the walls at any given opportunity. Sam amended to herself; well, more than she already did anyways.
In contrast to the easy smile of Kali Jade, Stasis Kiss was a little harder to know. Maybe even a lot harder. Sam hadn’t really spoken with her since back when all that stuff with Cent had been going on, when she and Eddie sat down with her in the park to talk. Well, except for group hang outs at the pools or once under the risers in Founders. Still, Stasi had a quick wit which made her fun to be around and besides, Eddie liked her well enough. She trusted his judgement probably more than she trusted her own.
Sam hoisted her stuff to one shoulder and began congregating herself, forming up on the blustering chaperone.
