A "Real" Hero ((Closed except by invite))

Post by Ekaterina Gordieva »

The school was quiet. No students ran through like they did not more than a week ago, laughing and chatting. There was nothing to laugh about. Nothing to be cheerful about. A feeling of dread and barely contained panic had settled on the campus and the city, destroying any sense of security with it. The list tacked in the hallway was proof enough of that. Everyday it got longer as students added the names of missing loved ones. Friends and family they had lost contact with. Even worse were the names with grim notations next to them. "Found in Atlas Park. Memorial Saturday." "Killed in Action in the Warzone." "Last seen in Steel Canyon during an attack. Presumed dead."

There were a few beacons of hope among the tragedies though. Names that had been crossed out with the word "FOUND!" scribbled beside them. Kat stood before the list, grasping the strap of her gym bag tightly. She scanned down the list of names, looking for anyone she knew, any name she had heard while pulling civilians to safety. Her eyes stopped on the name "Mary Kingsley". Almost immediately the name stuck out to her. The woman in Skyway. She said she had a son going to school here. Unzipping her gym bag, Kat dug into the bottom and produced a bright red gel pen. She quickly crossed out the name and wrote beside it FOUND! Admitted to LaGrange Medical Center. Kat smiled slightly and continued scanning the list. That should brighten his day. At least someone should get some good news around here. The smile on Kat's lips faded when she got about halfway down the list. There in the same red ink were the names she had written herself.

No notations accompanied these names. No news is good news right? Kat took a deep breath. She had been by their house, just out of town. It had been empty and showed signs of an unplanned and quick exit. They must have evacuated when the air raid sirens went off, Kat assured herself. They're safe. They just can't contact me yet.

Kat adjusted the strap of her bag back up onto her shoulder and dropped the pen back in. She needed to relax. She needed to clear her mind. Maybe then the dull pounding behind her eyes would stop. Squeezing the bridge of her nose, Kat turned toward the gym and began slowly walking. Practice always helped. She could lose herself in the routine for a while. Then there wasn't any list. No alien invasion. Her family was sitting on the sidelines watching her perform. Her friends were all safe in the world she created in her head. Too bad I can't change reality like that, Kat thought as she pushed open the door to the gym.

_____________________________________________________________

Kat closed her eyes and bent her knees. She lined up in her mind where the beam continued behind her. She pushed off and flipped backwards, planting her palms on the beam and pushing off again in one fluid motion. As she landed on her feet again, one foot slipped off the side, sending Kat toppling off the edge. She squeaked quietly and landed hard on the mat. Kat stood and dusted the chalk from her hands. That was the fourth time she had fallen in an hour. "Come on, Kat. Get it together." Kat smiled sadly. She was beginning to sound like David. She could almost hear his voice. Kat, you know you're better than this. I've seen you do it. Now, clear your head and get back up there. She walked up the the bar again and placed her hands on it, preparing to swing her leg up on it, when her comm crackled to life with a staticy whine.

"Warning: Rikti ships have been detected heading for King's Row." It was the same calm, even voice that had heralded chaos for the past few days. Panic crept up Kat's spine, making the gym suddenly seem very cold. "Come on, Kat. Get it together," she repeated. "There are people that will need help." Quickly, she ran to her gym bag and threw a jacket on over her workout clothes. She grabbed her comm as it rang out a few more warnings and clipped it to the waistband of her shorts. Here we go again, she thought as she quickly flew out of the gym and made a b-line for King's Row.

The neighborhood had descended into chaos by the time she got there. Drop ships carpet bombed the area. People covered their heads and ran for shelter. The air smelled of ozone, smoke and death. Kat took a deep breath and focused on the task at hand. Get as many citizens to safety as she could. She took off at top speed down the streets of King's Row, dodging the real heroes as they mounted an offensive assault against the invaders. She quickly threw out some shields and continued searching the streets. Seeing a piece of rubble fall from a building toward a car, she mentally pushed the car faster down the street. The debris crashed harmlessly into the road and Kat flew all the faster. A shield here. A push out of harm's way here. Anything to keep the citizens safe while the real heroes took on the Rikti.

A couple of blocks down the road, a family abandoned their car in the street, the people clamoring out and down the sidewalk. Kat grabbed the family, lifting them mentally off the ground and flying them the last few blocks to the shelter. Most of them were emotional wrecks. The mother, a young woman in her early thirties, had a mess of flame-red hair tangled into a ponytail and tears staining her face. Her husband held their young daughter like a lifeline. She was also wailing at the top of her lungs. Kat couldn't blame her. This was scary even to her. She couldn't imagine what it must be like to be a five-year-old in this situation.

As she set down in front of the shelter, the little girl broke away from her father and took off across the street. "Bethany!" The mother screamed at her child, begged her to stop, to come back. The young girl took off down the street toward the car the family had just left. "I need Marissa!" she called back to her parents, as if it was explaination enough.

"Please!" The mother grabbed Kat's arm and looked down at her. "You're a hero! Save my little girl!" Kat didn't try to correct the woman, that she wasn't a hero, she was just a kid with powers. Instead she squinted past the mounting headache and raced down the road, catching up to the girl as she got the car. The little girl climbed in the already open door and grabbed a little blonde baby doll from the floorboards as Kat wrapped her arms around the girl's waist.

"What are you doing? You need to get in that shelter with your Mom and Dad!" Kat hoisted the girl out fo the car and turned her around to face her. The girl's red hair hung down in her face, the tips wet with the panicked tears that seemed to be constantly pouring down the girl's cheeks. "I couldn't leave Marissa! She's scared!" Bethany cradled the doll in her arms as Kat shifted the girl's weight to carry her easier.

"Come on. Let's get you bac-" Just then an explosion rang out over Kat's head. She looked up to catch a glimpse of a Rikti drop ship just before the concussive EMP pulse knocked her to the ground. Kat covered the girl with her body and pushed out with her mind. The shield spread out from her in all directions, pushing the bits of trash and small debris away from the pair. Then she felt it. One heavy hit above her. And then another. Two more. Kat looked up fearfully to see the building tumble over and cascade down on her shield. I can't move fast enough! It's gonna hit us! Kat braced herself mentally and knelt down, cradling the Bethany's face again her chest. Another, even heavier hit and the bubble gave slightly, shrinking. And again.

And again. Over and over. The sound of the battles faded away, muted by the debris and Bethany's screams. Sweat poured off Kat's forehead as she concentrated on the shield, wincing with each hit. The shield shrank again. The top of the shield touched the top of Kat's head and she instinctively bent over, keeping the girl below her.

Then the hits stopped. The world was dark. And quiet. There were no explosions. No popping of portals opening. Apart from Bethany, sobbing in her arms, there were no screams. Kat pulled back from the girl and set her down. The pressure from the collapsed building pressed against her mind. Straining, Kat pushed back against the mountain. She shut her eyes against the pain and tried to expand her shield even slightly, to move any of the building around her. Tears slipped out of the corner of her eyes and made tracks in the dirt on her cheeks. Finally, Kat let all the air out of her lungs in desparation and staggered. Suddenly, as if sensing her weakness, the bubble shrank another few inches, the rubble groaning menacingly on the other side. Kat shierked and crouched on the ground, once again pushing against the shield, just enough to keep the monster at bay. She didn't know how long she could hold out, but the child's screaming wasn't helping. Kat clenched her teeth against the pain and looked at the girl.

"Bethany?"

Bethany just cried all the louder. "I want Mommy!"

Kat took another deep breath and tried to calm herself. It wouldn't do for the girl to see her falter. She plastered a smile on her face and talked a little louder. "Bethany?"

Bethany stopped crying and sniffled at her. "Uh huh?"

Oh, thank God. She stopped crying. Kat brushed some of the hair out of the girl's face and tried to ignore the increasing pain behind her eyes. "I'm gonna get us out of here, okay? You trust me? I'm gonna get you back to your Mommy, but I need you to be quiet while I call for help." Kat, after her eyes adjusted to the low light, glanced at the doll on the ground and took it into her shaking hands. Stop it! Stop shaking! You're scaring her! She smiled at the young girl and handed the plastic baby to her. "You keep Marissa safe okay? She's really scared remember? See if you can get her to calm down." Bethany nodded and sniffled again, awkwardly rocking the doll. As Kat reached for her comm she heard the girl start singing a lullaby to the doll.

Kat unhooked her comm from the waistband of her shorts and pressed the broadcast button, expecting to send a message out to the whole school. "Hello? Can anyone hear me?" She let up on the button and waited, the pressure behind her eyes growing with each passing moment. Frustrated, she pressed the button again. "Guys? It's Kat. I'm in King's Row. There's a collapsed building near the shelter. I got trapped. I need help." She let go of the button again, only to be met with silence. She looked down at her comm, checking for any signs of damage. No broken pieces, no dents, only minor scratches. But no blinking light, no sound either. The EMP thing Gabe was talking about. Oh, God... No one knows where we are. Kat set her comm on the ground and gathered Bethany up in her arms, rocking her, trying desperately to keep them both calm. Bethany looked up at her with red rimmed eyes. "Are they coming? Your hero friends?"

Kat nodded slightly and strained against the pain in her head. "Yeah, Bethany. They're on their way. We'll be out of here in no time. You'll see."

Garrison sat down in the cafeteria, exhausted and downtrodden. The day had been particularly tough, with the Rikti invading multiple zones at once, more than a couple of times. He looked around at the faces of his friends. The effects of this invasion were making them weary and desperate. Arguements had broken out more than a dozen times among the students. Fights almost half as much. Tempers and nerves were stretched thin all across the city. He was surprised riots hadn't broken out. That'd make this God-forsaken invasion complete.

"Hey, guys," he said, only to be greeted by grim nods and people picking at their food. He popped the top on his soda and glanced around again. Something was off. More than the depression. More than the silence. There was something missing. "Ummm... guys? Where's Kat?"

Everyone at the table came to the same realization at the same time and quickly looked around. "Didn't she say she was going to meet us for dinner?"

"Yeah, maybe she's asleep still. She hasn't been sleeping well."

"Shecouldbeinthegym." Mike looked around and slowed his speech slightly. "I mean, she could be in the gym. She goes there to clear her head."

Garrison nodded to Kelly. "Can you check her room? See if she's there? I'll run to the gym real fast. She probably just lost track of the time." Garrison stood and sprinted toward the gym. Please be there. Please be okay. The feeling of dread built in the pit of his stomach. He nearly crashed through the doors, throwing them as wide open as he could. "Kat? Kat, are you in here?" Garrison scanned the room quickly. It was silent, save for the last ringing of his voice echoing off the far wall. His gaze swept across the uneven bars, the vault, and the mats on the floor. It settled on the floor next to the beam. Kat's gym bag lay, wide open, her jeans still visible just inside it. "Oh, no... No, no, no." Garrison ran over to it and grabbed the strap. "Kat? Come on! Answer me! You in here?" He fumbled with his comm for a moment before finally pressing the right button. "Hey, has anyone seen Kat? Her bag was in the gym, but she isn't."

A chorus of voices answered him. "No!" "Nope, sorry." "You check her room? She's been getting headaches."

Kelly's voice rang out across the comm. "She's not in her room. Has anyone heard from her recently? Did she say where she was going?"

"I'm kinda busy right now!" "She's just being anti-social again." "Yeah, just leave her alone. She probably is just catching her breath somewhere."

"I'm going to look for her, guys. She doesn't just leave her bag lying around." Garrison shouldered the bag and took off for the cafeteria again. After dropping it off with the few friends of his that were still there, he began searching everywhere on campus that she could be, asking anyone who might know something.

Two hours later, the entire campus and a good portion of the city had been canvased, thanks to Mike and Garrison. She wasn't anywhere to be found. No one had heard from her in hours. So, he found himself standing in front of the bulletin board. The list of missing glared at him, an ugly reminder of why he was here. He sighed and slowly wrote on the bottom of the list of missing...

Jessica woke up to the sound of sirens starting to wind down...she was on a cot in the bunker, still in her suit from the raid earlier on Founders' Falls. She looked at the clock. It was almost eight o'clock at night. Jessica blinked a few times, then a smile came to her face as she thought Man...I must have been really tired...

She got out of the bed and turned her comm back on, then placed it back on her ear. She almost said hello, to see how everyone was holding up, when a conversation picked up.

"Where did you last see her?"
"Umm...I think last night."
"I thought there was a raid in King's Row?"
"Yeah..."

Jessica wiped a tear from her eye...Another missing friend...great...and Kat has my...

"I hope Kat's ok..."

Jessica froze. She hit the button on the comm to talk.
"Wait, what? Kat's missing?"

A few indistinguishable voices confirmed it. Jessica couldn't believe what she was hearing.

After last night...and now...

She dug into her pockets, then flipped open a compartment on her glove. Then she remembered...she had given IT to Kat last night.

"When did she go missing, y'all?" she asked.

"I don't know...I just know she was supposed to meet us for dinner in the cafeteria..." It was Garrison talking. "Me and Mike looked all over the city...we didn't find her..."

Jessica bit her lip, tears forming in her eyes.

Kat...why...

Jessica grabbed her gloves off the floor under her cot and put them back on. The speakers crackled to life as the air around her became electrically charged from her frustration. Then she was out the exit, and flying off to King's Row.
________________________________________________________

Three hours passed, and she had scoured every nook and cranny in King's Row. There were numerous buildings destroyed from the attack, and rescue workers trying furiously to get to trapped people. Jessica had tried to help at one building, but the firefighters and police stopped her, saying the risk was too great. So she waited...she watched as people were pulled from the rubble, some crying with a few scratches, others unconscious, but alive...twice she had to look away, as a body with a jacket, and another with a towel draped over them came out. But no one that looked like Kat. She frowned, biting her lip, her right hand furiously scratching her left upper arm.

She felt so numb...

The comm traffic went to static, then a loud voice boomed in, just as sirens began to wail. "Warning: Rikti Ships have been detected heading for Galaxy City." Then, the comm went back to normal, as numerous students called for backup. She shook her head, tears falling down her face.

She got up, and took to the sky in a flurry of wind, headed to Galaxy City to help get civilians to shelter. It was all she could do to ease her frustration, her fear...her desire to cut...she couldn't do it...

I promised Kat last night that I wouldn't...

Jessica threw her arms in front of her as she flew through the opening in the war wall, increasing her speed, dodging cars fleeing from the future battleground.

I promised...

Where are you, Kat? I know you're alive, I know you're safe... or are you...?

Arkady's eyes shot open, a loud cough escaping his chest as he fought to focus in the blinding light of the Rikti dropship overhead.

"Arkady!" Sam's voice rang in his ears, dulled by the ringing that still had yet to clear. "Ya alright, bud?"

With a nod, he drew to his feet, the large black mark on his chestplate indicating where he'd been hit. Anything but Impervium, he'd be minus a heart and lungs. Shaking his head, he surveyed King's Row, the sirens beginning to dull as the distant green of the War Walls kicking back in shown, even in wake of the rising sun. What time was it? He checked his watch, the digital display causing him to groan. 5:43 AM

Arkady frowned toward the mess of collapsed buildings, the fresh fires, fresh minds screaming in pain, anger, or just disappearing from sense all together. She'd been missing a whole day now, he knew so many had looked, had searched every nook and cranny, but in this?

Hang on, Kat... we'll find you.

"Hey, Ridley... you sure you're okay? Come on, there's breakfast waiting back at the shelter," Sam spoke toward his back as he wandered aways, "I know you don' eat and all, but you gotta come anyway, talk to your friends, on account of if you don't, I might just be sad and have to ramble on to some poor kid I don't know."

"I'm going to help with relief efforts here, I think, Sam. Go on ahead without me." His voice portrayed his constant battle to lose emotional sensitivity in an environment like this. A telepath, minor empath at that, could really lose themselves in such chaos.

"Alright... be careful, bud." Sam's voice seemed to stagger, but she didn't press, she was more than used to it by now.

Arkady offered her a smile over his shoulder as she disappeared into the air, before turning back on his current course. And that's when he heard the crunch, his foot stumbling through something broken.

"What the..." His eyes shot down. A pane of glass on the ground on... no. It was sand. Used to be sand anyway. His eyes quickly moved up to catch the other features of what once was a playground. A mangled slide, a swing hanging on one chain, the wood burnt to a crisp, the entire sandy foundation turned to glass in an instant by the fury of nuclear fusion.

Arkady frowned again, his heart sinking at the image before him as he dislodged his foot from the pane of glass underneath and took to the air, his wings blocking the sun from view for only an instant to him.
_____________________________________________________________

Arkady had objected whole-heartedly to removing his armor, dawning the coveralls, gloves, and filtered-mask of a rescue worker. This was hardly the outfit to get caught in when the Rikti came again, but that could be hours... or minutes.

Letting out a grunt, Arkady helped the team of civilians he was with, tossing aside a large chunk of rock in just another pile of rubble. He was exhausted, weary, disheartened, yet he fought on like so many. Whether in lieu of defending the city, or rescue operations, or fighting the offensive in the Warzone itself, he was a machine at this point. And then he perked, eyes drawing straight ahead as a stray thought picked itself up out of the river of white noise nearby.

"Marissa isn't scared with a hero here."

Immediately he moved in the direction of that thought, the other paying attention and following. They'd learned all too well he was a telepath, learned the drill over the past few hours, and silenced their thoughts to help.

"Someone will find us, I have to stay strong for Bethany."

Arkady needed no more incentive and practically dove at the rocks, beginning to tug and try to clear, his words clear to the rest of the crew.

"Two buried, female, get some help!"

As one of the teammembers dashed off to acquire additional support, maybe a crane or meta with super-strength, the rest began digging furiously as Arkady directed. Reaching out with his mind, Arkady pinpointed the two of them, his note directed toward the larger of the two bodies.

"Ekaterina? Hold on, it's Arkady, I have rescuers with me, we're coming!"

In the depths of her prison, Kat didn't know how much time had passed. The little girl in her arms had long since stopped sniffling. Kat assumed that she might have even fallen asleep from time to time. Kat spent most of the time talking to the girl, keeping her calm. She asked about the girl's friends and family and found out Bethany had a cat named Precious. Precious wasn't a nice cat, as Kat discovered from the small scratches on the girl's arm. "She doesn't like to swim," Bethany explained. Then Bethany asked her what it was like to be a hero. Kat bit back her first responce, that she wasn't. She instead told her of the time she had fought alongside Fusionette and the work she had done for Synapse, himself. The girl silently listened to Kat, never taking her eyes off of her. Kat must have talked for hours, stopping only when she noticed that Bethany's breathing had evened out again.

Kat went back to her quiet vigil, pushing against the shield and the pain, listening for any sign that people were on their way to help them. Apart from the dull thuds of the drop ships' bombs, there was no indication of how things were going in the outside world. More raids, she thought. More victims to save. The pain in her head threatened to overcome her every moment. The building pressed in close, but Kat knew that if she dropped her shield, even for a moment, she might not get it back up in time.

Doing the only thing she knew could, she closed her eyes. She prayed.

Dear God,

I need help. I need your strength and guidance. Give me the peace of knowing you watch over us all. Of knowing you have a plan for me. I pray to you for the strength to hold on, because God, I don't know how much longer I can. But I know, that you placed this girl with me for a reason. If I can't be strong for me and know that someone will find us, I have to stay strong for Bethany. Please, God, just give me a glimpse of your will for me. A sign of what you have planned.

Kat sighed in the following silence. No blazing light. No voice booming from above. Nothing.

Ekaterina?

Kat's eyes shot open, her breath catching in her throat.

Hold on, it's Arkady, I have rescuers with me, we're coming!

Kat could have cried. She had never thought that any sound would have been as great as that simple sentence. They had been found. Against all the odds, they had been found, and they were going home. She knew that the winged boy could pick up stray thoughts. Arkady? I have NEVER been so happy to hear someone in my head! I kinda got myself stuck. My shield... She trailed off as another wave of pain hit her, causing her to squeeze her eyes shut. It's holding the rubble back, but I don't know how long... My med badge is fried and there's a little girl with me. Hurry please!

Bethany shifted in her lap and held her doll close to her. Kat looked down at the girl and smiled slightly. "They're here, Bethany. We're going home."

Arkady lifted another rock, for the countless time, really taking no heed of the weight. The burning in the backs of his shoulders the only real reminder that he'd been pulling rocks of the pile for a long time.

"Alright, that's it, everyone off this thing while we get more shoring in."
The rescue Chief yelled out, and the workers shambled off the mountain of fallen rock and twisted metal to catch the first break they'd had in some time. Most took the opportunity to use the water to wash the grey dust from their faces.

Arkady grabbed for another rock, and the Chief took hold of his arm. "Come on son, we have to take a break to shore up what we've dug out. Take the break, you could use it."

Arkady nodded woodenly, and stumbled off the mound of debris which covered his friend, and sat on the curb, looking at the wreckage as if it were a living thing. He answered the fusilade of questions over the comm, all asking for information, and he answered the best he could. Telling everyone it was just a matter of time now.

He looked back at the rubble, and the lights that now illuminated the whole area. Funny, he didn't remember the sun going down.

Arkady? Are you almost to us?

We're getting there Kat. Not much longer now. He tried to keep optomistic for his friend.

Please...you have to hurry...It's too much weight, Arkady, I can't hold it much longer.

You have to hang on, Kat. We're almost there.

Arkady lurched to his feet, intent on going back to the pile and pulling out every stone himself if he had to. Trying to keep pictures of collapsing stone out of his head.

The Rescue Chief intercepted him, "Son, I know your friend is down there, but we can't do anything until we shore up what we've dug out." The Chief took both of Arkady's shoulders in his hands, "We want to get her out of there as much as you do, but if we keep digging now, we'll be pulling more people out of there than just her." He squeezed Arkady's shoulders, looking in the boy's eyes.

Arkady fought back the despair he felt, and nodded again. He wanted to scream at the man, to tell him he had to do something, but realized that the Chief was doing everything he could.

"Heyas, Arkady."

Arkady turned around and saw a figure in green, with long red hair flying down towards him. Lightfall, he remembered, and wearily waved a greeting. "Hey there, Lightfall."

A soft thump beside him heralded the arrival of Obsidian Seraph. "Heya Oby." A brusque nod was all the answer that Arkady got from the other hero.

"We heard what was happening, and thought we'd come by to see if we can help."

"I don't know, Lena. The rescue workers can't do anything until they shore up what they have now." He looked at the other two. "Kat's running out of time. The strain is just too much."

Lena looked at the debris, "She's holding up all THAT?! We need to help her now!"

"I know, Lena. I just don't know how."

"We can teleport her out. Oby or I could do it easily."

Arkady shook his head. "It won't work. She's got a small girl with her, and both her comm and medbadge are fried. There's no way to get a lock on her."

Lena looked frantic, her friend was in there, they had to do something. "Oby, can't you shadowalk them out?"

"No way. I'd have to take them both through the Otherworld. The kid wouldn't make it, and Kat's in no shape to deal with it."

They all three sat for a moment in muted shock, just not able to come up with a solution.

Arkady started, eyes wide with an excited look. "Wait aminute. Oby, could you Shadowalk to them?"

"I could, but I don't know how to find them."

"I can guide you."

"Okay, but what good will that do?" Oby asked.

Arkady fumbled around the inside of his collar and pulled off the small disk normally adhered there. "You take this, and Lena's badge, and I'll guide you to them. You can put the badges on them, and activate them."

"Worth a shot." Oby got up, and concentrated. His body faded into an inky black cloud, only his glowing eyes remained visible.

Lena took off her badge and handed it to Oby as well. "I'll try to take some of the strain off of Kat." Lena concentrated, sitting in a lotus position, hovering off the ground, reaching out empathically to Kat, and letting her abilities take some of the pain away. At the same time she fed Kat an adrenaline boost to help give her a bit more strength. "My god, Arkady, you have to hurry. I can't believe she held out this long."

Arkady, is that you? It feels a little lighter. Some of the strain went away.

No Kat, Oby and Lena are here, we're coming to get you right now.

Oby started to the rubble, and pushed his way through the cracks, sifting like a fog down towards Ekaterina, with Arkady guiding him. It was slow going though, as Oby worked around blocked routes, backtracking at times. His mind was slippery too. Arkady found he had to concentrate hard to keep the boy's mind in contact. It was as if Oby existed in two places, one here, and another place, that resisted Arkady's contact, trying to force him out.

Soon, Oby saw the blue corruscating energy that marked Kat's shield and flowed towards and through the energy, beside the two girls. He found a clear area, to come solid in. As he materialized he felt a searing pain, white hot through his calf, and let out a pained yelp.

Kat started, and almost dropped the shield, but managed to control it. Bethany started to scream, but Kat shushed her. "That's Oby. One of my friends that's coming to get us out of here."

Oby ignored the pain for a moment and took one of the med badges and set it on Bethany's neck. "This is going to feel kind of tingly." Oby managed a smile through the pain, but was feeling slightly light headed. "When it's over, you'll be in a hospital quicker than you can count ten. Ready?"

Bethany looked at Kat, who nodded, and then back to Oby. "One...two..." Oby triggered the badge manually, and Bethany winked out.

He groaned and looked back at his leg, and almost passed out when he saw. A piece of rebar stuck out of his leg, running from just above the Achille's tendon, through the muscle, and out, just below the knee. Bright red blood, arterial blood poured from the wound. "Aw F&$%, that's gonna leave a mark."

He looked back at Kat, his vision tunneling, and fumbled towards her with fingers that now felt tingly. He slapped the badge on her neck harder than he intended to.

"Ow!"

"Sorry." He slurred, and she looked at him and then down till she saw the leg.

"Oh my god, Oby."

He smiled at her, as he heard the warning blips coming from his badge. "I won't be far behind." He said as he tripped the manual recall on Kat's badge.

Kat gasped as she realized what he'd done. Her bubble would be gone. All that weight....

*********************************************************

"NO! Oby, not...yet." She yelled to the hospital walls.

She immediately heard another teleporter hum to life across the aisle from her.

"This one's okay." A woman in a nurses uniform called out. "The other coming in shows low blood pressure and pulse. We need a crash cart, and plasma here, stat!" Several other emergency techs wheeled in various tools of the trade as Kat watched.

Kat watched as the form of her friend materialized on the bed across the way. She saw him look at her and smile wanly, just before they closed the privacy curtain.

They'd all made it out. Kat smiled, and the adrenaline that sustained her this long faded. Sleep and unconsciousness raced to see which would claim her first, as she settled back onto the bed.

Arkady sat heavily on the chair next to Kat's bed, wincing. It was... nearly 2 AM by now, and aside from his body gradually deteriorating into total fatigue and aching from the day of heavy lifting, worrying, and his aggressive evening of attacking the Rikti Mothership in the Warzone. His eyes fell on the small girl in the bed, finally cleaned up abit, a few bruises, but mostly unharmed... physically anyway.

Arkady knew, could feel, she had been drained, dehydrated, drawn to the point of heat stroke or worse. He watched her quietly, that overwhelming fatigue she must have felt, the one he always had when he was younger, cancer draining his cells of their energy before he could even wake up most days.

You held that bubble for almost 30 hours, Kat... You have an amazing strength...

Carefully rotating his shoulders he looked into the next bed, peeking just past the curtain, to see if Oby and Lena were still there. Oby was still in his bed, but fine, Lena's red hair strewn across the white sheet where she slept at his side.

If it hadn't been for them, you might not have made it, but I still would have dug... I'd have gone until I couldn't if it meant getting you to safety...

Sliding his hand across his face he removed his glasses, his sight no worse off without them. Not many knew, he wore them simply as a reflective precaution, to avoid accidental eye contact as a telepath. He was still so unsure of his own ability to prevent something from happening.

His mind mulled, so many things going on, so many people hurt, missing, and now James... no one quite knew yet, except for Garrison, and Devon who'd witnessed the explosion. He'd think of something, he promised he'd break the ice on it, but for now, no one needed that sort of news. Jess... she still hadn't told him what had happened, he'd caught a thought here and there, heard rumors, but he was just so unsure of her, of them... Something seemed off, but... what? Drawing in a sigh, his eyes returned again to Kat, a smile drawing across his face, even those muscles screaming at him not to move.

You were there, you helped her. But you promised you wouldn't say anything, she's your friend too... In time, she'll tell me, she says...

Setting the glasses down on the table beside the bed, Arkady settled his ear down against the sheets, laying much like Lena appeared, his arm moving to provide a make-shift pillow, his eyes on her arm.

You saved that little girl, you held up against all odds for so long, prayed for help... help came, and whether or not it was some guiding force, or just dumb luck... I had never been so scared for someone in my life, nor had I ever felt such a sense of relief that someone was okay. I... I don't want to lose you...

Arkady's free hand slid across the sheet to rest atop hers, so small compared to his, seemingly fragile. Letting out one final, calming breath to steady himself, his eyes fell closed, and he carefully squeezed her hand.

"You're a real hero, Ekaterina."

Kelly slipped quietly into the ward. She walked silently up to the foot of Kat’s bed. She noted Arkady holding Kat’s hand as she slept. I wonder, she thought, what’s going on there I thought he and Jess had got pretty tight? Kelly bit her lower lip in thought as her eyes moved the sleeping girl’s face. Kat, she thought, I heard what you did. That was incredible, I am so very proud of you. I am so sorry I wasn’t there to help look for you. Tears rolled down Kelly’s cheeks, too many friends and loved ones needing help, too many complete strangers needing help how many places could a person be at once? She looked at the crumpled piece of paper in her hand. She had found it a couple days ago. Or was it just day, or maybe three? She couldn’t remember. It had been when she went up to her room to see if Kat was there. She called everyone on the comm. to let them know Kat wasn’t there, and then saw the letter on her bed. It was from her father’s attorney. She didn’t know how it had got there; it must have been hand delivered by someone from the law firm.

Dear Miss Green,
We have been trying to reach you for sometime now; unfortunately the current troubles have lead to a breakdown in the basic infrastructure. This letter has been sent by courier and we hope it finds you in good health. It is with out deepest regrets that we inform you your Father’s plane has been reported missing since the day of the Rikti invasion. At this time your father is listed as missing and presumed dead, though unless solid evidence is found it will be sometime before a legal determination is made…

The letter went on but Kelly did not wish to read it again. I should have been there looking for you Kat, she thought. I should have been there looking for everyone. I am sorry I am sorry I wasn’t. My Dad is missing but everyone has someone missing… or worse. I need to stop feeling sorry for myself. I need fight and be strong. Forgive me Kat; I won’t let you down again…
