When Nothing's on TV (semi-closed, see RP-discussion forum)

Rain was coming down hard, spattering to the windows in oversized drops.
Gabe flipped open his Police scanner, desperate for something that would demand his attention.

"Unit twenty, 10-100-1." Officer had to take a pee, thanks for sharing.
"Unit fourteen, 10-11, it's up ina tree." Animal rescue call... nothing.
"Unit seventeen be advised, 10-32 requested." Drunk driving at noon? Sounds like a real winner, but nothing they'd need hero backup for.
"I've got her dispatch, 10-60 in protective custody, 10-22 the ambo."

He sighed and flipped the scanner closed with a snap, nothing. nothing at all.

He surveyed the table in the quad, where he'd amassed all the board games he could find, though he lacked a play partner at the moment. Monopoly minus the money, 3-dice yahtzee... Risk.

God, he hated Risk, ever since he'd spent an entire evening attempting to dislodge a defensive position that would put the Maginot line to shame out of Irkutsk. What the heck WAS Irkutsk?

ugh.... it was going to be a very long day.

Bryan sat at his desk, his pencil tapping rapidly against the spiral bound notebook in front of him. The only accompanying sound in the large dorm room was the hiss of the wind outside occasionally whistling through the window casing and the rapid paced sound of raindrops angrily smashing against glass.

He looked up from his desk, raising his head from the English textbook. He sighed, the homework was boring and the pouring rain outside had all but forced him to sit and work on it.

Bryan looked around the room at the empty desks and beds. Jase was off gallivanting somewhere exotic, Andrew was most likely sequestered away in a lab and Jake was off doing “who knows what”. The young man stood from his chair, stretching. Subconsciously forcing himself away from the work he didn’t want to finish.

Bryan threw his pencil back over to his desk, it landing with a soft sound and coming to rest on the open textbook.

With a yawn Bryan walked out the quad door and into the empty hallway, mumbling to himself. “I wonder if anyone is watching anything good in the common room?”

Kat laid her head down on her desk with a thump and groaned. She had been staring at the Chemistry book for so long, she was sure the words were beginning to run together. Catalysts and covalent bonds... when was she ever going to need to know this stuff? She sat back up, rubbing her eyes. Quickly the Chemistry book was pushed aside as she looked over at her stack of schoolwork. She scanned the books: US History, Algebra, English Literature... Each one made her cringe just thinking about the work involved, sitting at her desk and focusing on the task at hand.

Kat was restless. The rain outside was doing little to improve her mood. This overwhelming force, cancelling all plans of going out. Although...

"Ugh... I can't stay here anymore," she said to no one in particular. Kat stood and quickly changed into her jeans and a t-shirt. She packed her gym clothes and a couple water bottles on top of her sketch book in her gym bag before hoisting the strap up onto her shoulder. The school books remained piled on the desk as Kat made her excape into the hallway.

It had been a pleasant surprise to discover that the climate belt, at full power, could keep Joni moderately warm even when she was soaked to the skin, but it had done nothing to prevent her from looking and feeling like a drowned white rat.

Her last clean uniform was now drip-drying on the towel rack in the bathroom, and she apparently wasn't the only one who had been caught outside when the skies opened up; there were six baskets of clothes ahead of hers in the laundry room. It was a good thing it was the weekend and she could get away with wearing casual. There was nothing that could be done about her hair, though, which was still even more of a mess than usual, no matter how much she attacked it with a hairdryer and brush.

She glanced out the window as she re-entered the hall. Still pouring. Soaking in the gene pool was definitely out; heading out at all would use more battery power than she felt comfortable spending. All her schoolwork was finished, Alex was out of town visiting her parents again, Amy wasn't receiving visitors, and the chess clubroom was on the far side of campus.

The public-use computer in the common room was free; she checked her email. Spam. Reminder that the history paper was due tomorrow. More spam. A notice that her fall class registration had gone through. Viagra spam... She logged out, then moved to the couch on a whim; the gray skies and the rhythmic drumming on the windows were making her lethargic. Maybe she could just nap through the storm...

Gray fingers drummed against black plastic almost in unison to the pattering of raindrops on the windows glass. Ves looked up from the old, battered electronic chess game to stare for a moment at the dismal view, distorted by the sheeting water. She had thankfully long since finished what little homework she had. The combination of books, papers, and rhythmic plops found her picking her head up several times after nearly nodding off.

She stood and took a moment for a languid stretch before gently placing the game on the now unoccupied bed. Chess wasn’t nearly as much fun with an opponent that was little more than circuitry and electrons.

Pacing the room for a few moments, Ves went over some options. None of the contacts she had called had wind of anything going down at the moment. The joy of a simple flight would be considerably, and literally, dampened by the ever pounding rain. Pocket D? No. Like many clubs these days, most times it rode the extremes of being either too empty or too noisy, not often seeing a middle ground. Plus, it was only fun if there were friends there to hang out with.

After pulling on a pair of loose sweatpants and sneakers and throwing a jacket on over her t-shirt, Ves stepped out into the hallway. She stopped outside the door to look again at the clouds, peering up as large drops rolled across the skylights. It looked like the rain was here to stay. She sighed quietly and turned towards the stairs to make her way to the common room, wondering if she'd find anyone there.

((we're still waiting on one or two more, but if you could please have your characters start moving to a commons area, I'd appreciate it, hard to bump into anyone in your own room after all. ))

"Morning rain...ick" Alice thought as she looked out her window seeing what a was promising to be a long gray day "I hate rain...I can't fly..." she looked back over at her wings. They tended to collaps and become so damp with the moister that they wouldn't catch any air and let her fly. She had hoped to visit Will but he still had not been given on school lodgings and she pouted at the misty window staring at her own foggy reflection. "Oh well, I have much to much homework for anything...*sigh*" and she sat down to begin her algebra she had been putting off all week...

Hours later, after finishing her homework, folding and refolding all her clean clothes, cleaning her side of the room for fourth time Alice finally decided she needed to get out and DO something.

"Hmm...I wonder if anything is going on out in the common room??" and she tried to fluttered off the ground but after a few minutes of failed attemps she conceted defeat and started walking out to see if anyone else was as bored as she was.

The grit rolled beneath her fingertips as Aeon pressed her hands to the moist window sill. She could feel a chilly downdraft roll over her arms, even through her polar fleece sweater. There was zero chance yoga was happening outside any time soon.

She turned from the rain-spattered window to survey the rest of the room--it was far too cramped to do anything real active here. She could patrol maybe.

Aeon turned back to the window, brow furrowing. The way the rain was coming down, not likely. A constant sprinkle would pretty much nullify any edge of stealth she had, and fighting indoors wouldn't be very easy if she was wet. And she wasn't in the mood for sewers.

She sighed dramatically to herself and paced the room a few times. Homework was done. Laundry was done. Errands were done.

Maybe someone had an interesting book she couldn't find in e-book format. Aeon pocketed her keys and made her way lethargically to the common room. No doubt she wasn't the only one bored today.

Billy was standing in a corner of the common room, with a two foot high ball of cellophane sitting on the table next to him. The crackling yellow plastic yielded other strange objects as he unpacked it--a tin of Wasabi peanuts What th' heck is wasabi? --a packaged box with pictures of tea-cakes on it -- Is this European Candyland or something? -- and other numerous strange food items. One was a bag, handstamped, declaring it to be something called "Wedding Imperial." He opened it carefully, took a sniff. The heady aroma of loose tea filled the room.

"Oh, hey," he said, turning and catching a glimpse of someone else. "There's all this fancy weird food here that Dad can't eat. You wanna share?"

He shakes the tea, examining it. "And I dunno how to do up tea like this. I know bags and stuff. Maybe we should make some and tell fortunes with it. Does anyone know how to make fancy tea? And tell fortunes?"

Amandine stared at the textbook in front of her in frustration... This was easy stuff... all of her classmates could do this math with their eyes closed. But no matter how many times she did it, the answers she got never seemed to match the ones in the back of the book.

"Forget it" she muttered to herself, tossing the book onto her bed "I'm not going to figure this crap out anytime soon". Still muttering to herself in french under her breath, she grabbed her bag and pulled on her shoes... maybe there would be someone in the quad.

Halfway out the door, she glanced back, and with a sigh, picked the textbook up off the bed. She was about to place it on the considerable stack next to her desk, but after thinking for a moment, she sighed and threw it in her bag. "I suppose if there's nobody else about, I can give it one more try... perhaps the change of scenery will help"

Gabe dragged himself out into the hallway. Nothing wanted to move. It was sheer boredom lethargy. But he was going nuts staring at the walls in his room, he felt like that dude from The Shining, and was coming to appreciate how dreadful the situation would be.

The door to the commons room was open.

Only Billy was there, not exactly his favorite company, but at the moment, any conversational partner would be better than none at all.

"Hey," he said, dragging himself with shuffling steps towards the corner of the room Billy'd staked out, "oh, uh, I think you use boiling water, but I don't have a strainer handy... where'd you get all that junk anyway?"

Aeon made her way down to the common room, lethargy fighting with a bored restlessness. The scent of strong tea wafted from the room, stirring something primordial in her.

She skittered in and quickly took stock, waving at Gabe, then locking in on the assorted gifts.

"Hey Billy." She slid cat-like into a seat at the table and turned on the charm, fixed the source of the aroma. "What you got there? Perchance have you need of a teapot?"

"It's tea," he said briefly to Violet, pinching a lock of her hair and giving it a brief tug. He looked over his shoulder at Gabriel. "There's a bunch of fancypants people who've donated all sortsa stuff to the relief effort. And the Father wrote in to his bishop about what happened, you know, that first day, 'bout my Dad's heart attack" Billy looked momentarily embarrassed. Gabriel gave him a look. Billy shrugged. "You know. They think I'm a hero and all that. Some of them send fancy food."

"Holy cats, is that pate?" Gabe said, staring at the innards of the cellophane ball. Aeon looked up from where her nose was buried in the open bag of tea. Looking at Billy for permission, he started lifting out more containers and boxes. They spread out the bounty on the table. Two boxes of fancy tea-cakes. A box of petit-fors. Tins of sardines. Wasabi peanuts. Two intimidating-looking tins of pate. A pot of gooseberry jam. An asiago, a roquefort, and a camembert cheese. Four boxes of fancy crackers. The Wedding Imperial tea. A second bag of Darjeeling.

"This is enough junk food for, like, twenty people," Billy said.

"Please, when it's rich people's junk food, it's called "High Tea." Gabriel stared at all of this, then looked around the common room, then looked at the spread again.

"Billy," he said. "Do you really want to give all this away?" Billy nodded. "Are you two doing anything for the next half-hour? Because I have an idea."

"What?" Billy asked.

"Okay. One of you find a pair of teapots and a hotplate. The other, see if you can scrounge up some mugs and plates. I'll see what I can do about linens and decor. Oh, and a sign."

"Look, I know I'm not a genius, but I'm not following you right now either," said Billy.

"St. Joseph's High School Host Club!" said Gabriel, inexplicably, grabbing the next person who came through the door and whisking them off on a quest for linen.

"teapots and hotplate?" said Violet, pointing to herself.
"Mugs and plates," replied Billy.

They left a sign on the door.
"Tea Party: One Hour. Dress up."

Bryan made his way to the common room. He read the sign left by the entrance and grinned. "Sometimes this place is just too much." He entered the empty room and plopped down on the sofa.

Bryan yawned as he flipped aimlessly through the channels, wondering where everyone else was on a day like today.

Gabe felt utterly ridiculous, dressed in his sunday best and then some, the old suit he had left over from the prom that he managed to dig out of the way back of his closet, he'd unearthed enough arcana in his dig for the old thing that he was half tempted to spend the day in quiet contemplation of the Mysteries and bag off altogether.

But no, there he stood, bent over a rack of half-filled teapcups with a silver spoon in hand. Where the heck did that come from? Did the kid have an entire regency-era service in there? Well nevermind that, he was using the spoon as an expedient immersion heater, feeding it current from his fingertips as he slowly moved down the line. It was a comforting ritual, of sorts: insert, pulse voltage and wait. "So, Billy, he said, when are your guests arriving?"
