“One step closer…”, Miles was getting close to another leap in his training. “This is what I need to do.” he said to himself, nose buried in a book about magical transformation. The chapter he was on was titled Merge, for those who had more than one form to shift to. What would happen to him if he tried? It reminded him of a story about a member of the families that attempted it centuries ago.
Five generations after the power of the beast was given to the families, there was a terrible conflict between the unnamed state and a neighboring territory. The armies were immense, four of the five men of the families sent to fight were killed in battle. The single man that remained was Portos. In a feat of desperation, Portos merged the three beasts within himself. The energy was such that the earth shook with every step, the single man managed to kill 1000 soldiers in a single night. However, after the battle, Portos fell. Not from sword nor spear, but from his own power. It had been too much for a single human to handle. Word was sent back to the families about the events that has transpired. Ever since, the children were told specifically not to attempt this as it is a risk to the bloodlines.
“Screw what they said.” Miles said to no one , “If it gets me home faster, I’m going to do it.” The boy continued reading on how to accomplish this feat not attempted by anyone in the bloodlines for over two thousand years. Even with the risk of killing himself, Miles was going to try it. A spirit merge...

“Damn it!” Miles shouted to no one , punching a tree in the area of Talos he’d picked to train. Four days with no results. It was looking like the spirit merge was a bust. “What am I missing?” He thought, going over the story and the methods from the books in his head over and over again. Miles sat under the tree he’d been assaulting, fist stinging beneath his glove. “What is I…” he paused, a beeping noise coming from his pocket. He was going to be late for history. “I’ll get back to this later.” Miles sighed as he got to his feet and headed back to the school.

Another astounding failure, Miles had tried everything he could think of to make the merge work. Training alone wasn’t enough, he needed a partner. Miles sifted through every person he’d met in his time at the school, every person he’d met didn’t exactly train save for one. “Who was that one, the one with the sword?” He thought aloud. “He’s bonded with the sword that’s got the Masters in it. The hell is his name?”
Miles knew from the stories that the Masters would have him train to become a great warrior. Suddenly, a name popped up into his mind. “I’ve gotta get back to the school.” Wide eyed, he dashed back to school grounds, “I need to find Hadrian!”

It seemed that tracking down Hadrian was more difficult than it sounded. However, Miles had gotten a lead on where the teen swordsman might be, a place called “Eden”.
-----
On arrival, Miles understood why Eden would be a good place to train. Nature would be a good place for anyone to train, open spaces, no people around, almost total silence. The young chimera noticed a figure in the distance, he rushed over to see if it was the one he was looking for. As Miles drew closer, the figure took the shape of a teen boy around his age who seemed to be fighting invisible opponents. “This’ gotta be him.” he muttered to himself.
Miles smiled behind his mask, “Kalos mera, Hadrian.” The boy froze in place at the sound of his name. The swordsman sheathed his blade and turned toward Miles. “Hey. You know my name, but who are…” he paused, turning his head to the side slightly before meeting the eyes of the other boy again. “You must be Miles.” the hooded boy nodded, “Masters?” Arthur nodded in response. “Lets get straight to the point. I want to train with you.”
-----
Arthur Hadrian, the latest student of the Masters. Miles had never fought anyone like this before. After several hours, the surrounding area was scarred from battle. Deep slices and fist sized holes in trees, scorched pot holes in the ground below their feet. Both boys were on their backs, mildly battered in now torn clothes. “Same time tomorrow?” Miles asked, smirking. “You’re on.” Arthur replied. Both teens laughed as they lay there recovering. Looked like Miles had found a partner.

Training with Arthur was going well enough, it was helping to hone Miles’ fighting skills. However, it wasn’t what he wanted, what he needed to go home. Miles was once again hitting the books with a vengeance, trying to find something he missed, something he didn’t think of before. Without warning, something he’d read in a book on alchemy as a child flashed through his mind. “An exchange.” he blurted out, the walls of the empty library echoing back to him. He couldn’t remember the exact wording, but if he wanted to do this, something had to be lost. “The hell am I gonna give up to make this work?”
-----
Miles once again was standing in the section of scarred earth he and Hadrian would train in. Sword scars, sink holes, and the occasional drop of dried blood littered the landscape. Regardless of the outcome, he was going to make this work. He’d found something to give up in order to receive a new gift. Miles slowly began chanting an incantation he was making up as he went along.
Palios Katochos Para Arthro Thirio, Apodechomai Dikos Mou Thysia Para Arthro Fotia Kai Arthro Erpeto Eis Parachoro Dynami Eis Boitho Dikos Mou Taxidi. ZOI SYNCHONEFSI!
A faint white glow surrounded Miles as he stopped his incantation. He’d felt like he had just run a marathon, aching everywhere imaginable, barely enough energy to remain standing. A horrifying pain in his upper back caused Miles to lurch backward, the sound of tearing leather echoing in his head. His garment was slowly beginning to turn white as snow as the wings of his phoenix form erupted from his back. This wasn’t what he wanted “Ahh! Where did I screw up?!” Miles felt his face becoming like scaly armor as with his serpent form. It was almost too much to bare, Miles just had to hope it would be over soon. Fortunately for the boy, it was. He fell to one knee as he felt his energy return, different somehow. “Is…is that it? Did that do it?” the chimera asked himself. But now wasn’t the time, he was far too weak to attempt a test on anything.
It took nearly everything Miles had to shift back into a form he was at least semi comfortable in, the lion. He hoped when he tried to change back to his new form it wouldn’t be nearly as painful. In his attempt to give up two of his beasts to empower the third, it seemed he’d gotten what he set out for. It would be a while before he was able to fight again, so he slowly hobbled back to the school to get some rest. “Heh, one step closer…” he thought, “May as well get used to this place, looks like I’m stuck in Paragon for a while…”

( If you’ve actually made it this far I congratulate you for making it through my incoherent ramblings. I have no idea how to close this so I’m gonna just end it here. Again, if you made it this far? Way to go, I hope at least someone enjoyed it a little bit. This is Alter Mage, and I’m out.)
