THE HOMECOMING GAME

Post by Rudi MacKenzie »

PRE-GAME

The stadium lights flicked on, the crowd letting loose with a thundering roar that matched the feelings of those waiting to take to the field. The Mustangs came out first. The Flyers could see their red and gold flag flying and hear the disdain from the crowd as the rival team made their way to the sidelines. Finally it was time. The voice from the overhead PA system cried out the words they were waiting to hear:

"Ladies and Gentlemen! Your Saint Joseph Flyers!"

Scott Sanders was the first through the paper banner, held up by Francis Cross and Jade Rooster while the rest of the cheerleaders waved their pom-poms and shouted loud enough to be heard over the din. The crowd was on their feet, the marching band playing music meant to get the crowd hyped up as the chant began:

"S-J-S! S-J-S!"

The rest of the players formed two lines, hand slapping their teammates as they ran through the gauntlet. Coach Jeff Waters was the last one through.

"LET'S SHOW THEM SOME FOOTBALL!" He shouted before giving a few short blasts of his whistle. The team huddled around him, raising their hands in the air towards the center, joining in with their own chant.

"BEAT WESTFIELD! BEAT WESTFIELD! BREAK!"

FIRST QUARTER

"Come on Flyers!" The stadium was packed. Nearly everyone from the school was in the stands, stomping their feet and screaming at the top of their lungs. One particular section, filled with students decked out in blue and white, yelled the loudest. The team catered to them, pointing and waving at friends in the crowd. Recent graduates Glacial Mass and Eric Copper sat near by, the latter proving as energetic as ever while the Flyers did their best to give everyone reason to cheer. Less than 3 minutes into the game, they would do just that, sending the crowd and the marching band to their feet…

Scott Sanders called tails, and the Flyers won the toss, receiving first. Ty Cloud cracked his neck and stood ready to go as Westfield's Eric Maynard sailed the opening kick-off straight into his arms. Cloud made a mad dash cross field, taken down at the Mustang's 40 yard line. The crowd’s deafening roar sent an electric charge through the field, a charge felt by veteran receiver Bryan Baxter. When Scott Sanders hit him with a 28 yard pass, he high-tailed his way serpentine style into the end zone giving the Flyers an early lead. Baxter downed the ball with enthusiasm, then following the marching band's lead he went on to perform the "Charleston" as the crowd howled at his antics. Samantha Douglas took to the field, high-fiving her teammate before sending the ball sailing through the crossbars for the extra point, giving the Flyers an early 7-0 lead.

Still on fire, the Flyers held back the Mustangs, and on their next possession ate nearly six minutes off the clock, driving 65 yards. Sanders made two quick snap passes to Zack Aiken, and the drive was capped by running back Antoine Dubois’ one yard touchdown plunge. With another extra point to notch Douglas' belt, the score became 14-0.

The Mustangs offence got its first taste of success late in the quarter when a pass interference call against St. Joseph’s #27 Nigel Barlow resulted in a first down. But the Flyer’s defence rallied, stopping an attempted rushing play cold for a loss of two. Two failed pass attempts from Mustang quarterback Allen Anderson brought up fourth down and Maynard came in to punt as the first quarter came to an end.

SCORE: FLYERS 14 MUSTANGS 0

Kelly jumped to her feet as Bryan darted into the end zone for the first score of game.

"Nice play 'Wrong way'", she shouted clapping her hands, "GO FLYERS!"

Later in the game Kelly stood up again after Sam's 2nd extra point.

Kelly chuckled as she said in her best "Sammy" voice,
"Did you see that? They snaped the ball, and the white guys charged in like woosh... and we blocked them like BAM, and Sam was like Woah, and then she just kicked the ball through the goal! It was tottally awesome!"

(Great job on this guys I love it!)

On the sidelines...

"The Charleston? Baxter, you are damn lucky they didn't call an unsportsman-like conduct on you!" Coach yelled at Bryan. "I'd make you run laps tomorrow but I think you punished yourself enough by dancing like this is The Great Gatsby!"

With that the team roared with laughter, Bryan right alongside his teammates.

SECOND QUARTER

Scott Sanders felt like he was on top of his game. It was just one of those nights when everything seemed to click. He cheered from the bench as he watched his teammate Lucas "Mighty E" Alexander intercept a Mustang pass at the 48, giving the Flyers the ball in excellent field position. Running with enthusiasm back into the game, Sanders began to put together another drive, mixing short passes and running plays to eat time off the clock and keep Westfield’s offence off the field.

The Mustang D had other ideas, though, aggressively attacking the line of scrimmage and choking off the running lanes. The Flyers doggedly continued to move the ball, with both Dubois and Fullback Richie Anderson gaining tough yards on the ground, but it seemed the drive was destined to stall out. Feeling comfortable with a fourteen point lead, Sanders decided to gamble on a third and long situation, sending all his receivers streaking for the end zone.

The Mustangs blitzed.

The crowd fell silent as Sanders hit the ground. They stayed silent when he failed to get up. The clock was halted as a stretcher came in to carry the injured QB back to the locker room. The team looked on in concern, and even the announcement that the Mustangs were being penalized on the play did nothing to lighten their mood.

After a 10 minute delay and no word on Sanders, Coach Waters sent in his back-up quarterback, recent transfer Stephen Reed. On his first play of the season, Reed caught Westfield napping, finding Baxter wide open in the end zone for a 24 yard touchdown pass. The former Seacliff star then called his own number, running in a two point conversion to put the Flyers up 22-0.

After a decent kick return by Westfield’s Jeremy Shannon, the Flyer’s defence came back on to the field looking to shut down the ponies yet again. Unfortunately, another pass interference call on first year cornerback Nigel Barlow allowed the Mustangs to penetrate the Flyer’s zone for the first time on the day. This earned him a talking to from team captain Biff Hannigan, but frustration had clearly set in and Barlow was called for grabbing a face mask on the very next play.

The Mustangs were unable to capitalize on their opportunity, however. They were forced to settle for a Field Goal, finally claiming a spot on the scoreboard with Steven Christopher’s 24 yard kick.

The next few possessions produced no plays of note until late in the quarter when Westfield once again needed to punt the ball away. Newcomer Ty Cloud was ready, catching the ball at the 30 yard line and making an incredible 70 yard dash into the end-zone, celebrating with the crowd by performing a victory dance of his own. Unfortunately the celebration was cut short by the sounds of whistles and a flag on the play. The crowd booed lustily as a holding call was announced, wiping out the incredible return.

With only a few seconds left in the half, Saint Joseph’s chose to run out the clock. Even with a tremendous lead of 22-3, Coach Jeff Waters looked less than pleased as both teams headed to their respective locker rooms.

SCORE: FLYERS 22 MUSTANGS 3

Although the "Flyer" arrived a few minutes late... obviously having trouble getting all the paint on, he was there cheering on as loud as the squad below him.

Image

With the crowd silent wondering if everything would be okay, it didn't take long for Stephen to step up and have even the most quiet fans on their feet "Gooooooo Flyers!!!!"

HALF TIME

Before the last Mustang was off the field, the Flyer’s cheer squad had taken their places. Izzie stood with the rest of the marching band ready for the signal from the drum major to start the show. The kickline and color guard, sparse as they were, took their positions. The band started slowly, a crowd of SJS students and alma mater began to sway, joining with the St. Joseph's school song.

"Praise we sing to you St. Joseph
Praise the white and blue
Hand in hand where we all stand,
Our hymn rings out to you."

A much more lively toon started up as Jade Rooster ran through the center of the marching band line carrying a large blue and white banner, followed by the rest of the cheer squad. Franky, Lycia, Kat and Brianna took their places front and center in a V formation. Enough of the students knew the words to the unofficial fight song and voiced them loud and proud with the cheer squad.

"Standing straight and standing tall we show our loyalty!
SJS has heard the call, we'll fight for victory!
RAH! RAH!
Come on and fight, we'll win this game, we know this to be true,
We'll sing our song both loud and strong
GO FIGHT! GO WHITE! GO BLUE!
GO FLYERS!"

The football team could hear the recorded music start as the cheerleaders showed off their latest routine, their energy still pumped up as they joked and batted each other around until Coach Waters slamming his hand into a locker settled them down.

"LISTEN UP!" He barked. "We had a good first half, but we need to keep the momentum going! Westfield isn't stupid. They're going to fix their defensive holes and come back strong. We're going to need to come back stronger! I want 100% out there and I’d best see it. You're starting to get cocky, and I'll be damned if I'm going to let any team of mine sit back and hand the game over because they think they're the better. Last season doesn't matter! It doesn't matter how many games we won! What matters is right here, right now, and you all better get that straight before you go arranging any victory parties. Now you go back out there strong- you keep going like you did in the first quarter and we'll all have something to celebrate." The team started making some noise again, banging against the lockers, but Coach Waters wasn't finished. He grabbed one player's jersey and pulled him to the side, lowering his voice.

"Barlow, you've come on strong enough." If there was one thing Coach Waters found inexcusable, it was stupid penalties. "You're sitting out this quarter. If you don't know what you're supposed to do out there, take some notes from Lucas. He knows how to cover his man cleanly." He shot another stern look at the teen before turning his back and raising his voice again.

"Hannigan! Keep them pumped up. I'm going to check on Sanders."

Bri and Maureen stood side by side, grasping each others hands for support while they waited on word of Scott. No one said anything for ten minutes and the look on everyone's faces was one of disbelief. Bri caught Stephen's eye as he was talking to the coach. He was nodding and turned to her, smirking and winking once before trotting out to the field. She couldn't help but grin, despite the circumstances. Her joy only escalated with the touchdown and Stephen's 2-point conversion. Bri jumped and cheered alongside her squadmates.

Of course it was only a matter of time before she was reminded that this wasn't Seacliff. Just as Stephen had predicted, Nigel cracked under the game day pressure and gave into his less than desirable tendencies. She couldn't believe him! Was he trying to start a fight? As the half drew to a close, she caught herself glaring at Nigel as he passed her on his way to the locker room. When would he ever learn that he didn't belong in this world?

Diyar looked down at the quarterback, sprawled on the field after the blitz. He didn't know a LOT about football, but he knew this meant two things.

That HAD to hurt.

Stephen was going into the game.

He looked down, trying to catch Brianna's attention. She was grinning, looking over to the flyer bench as Stephen got up, snapping his helmet and taking to the field. Myshka squeezed Diyar's hand, and he turned, matching her smile. They both stood up, cheering on Stephen as he brought the team into a huddle.

Sure...he wasn't wearing the good ol' red and silver of Seacliff, but it was pretty good to see him on the field again. And when he threw a touchdown pass to start things off, Diyar and Myshka were on their feet, screaming with excitement. Any preconceptions of Stephen as a footballer were gone from Diyar's mind...

This game had just gotten that much better.

THIRD QUARTER

The cheer squad lined up on either side of the ramp, shouting words of encouragement as the team came out of the lockers.

"Come on Flyers!" Lycia called.
"Go Blue and White!" From Franky and Rooster
"Show 'em how it's done!" Brianna called.
“Put ‘em in their place, Hanny!” cried Maureen.

Nigel looked beyond annoyed as he took his spot on the bench coming out of the lockers. Next to him sat a glum looking Scott Sanders, his throwing arm immobilized in a sling. There was no word yet on how bad the injury was, just that he wouldn't be back in the game, not today.

Just as Coach Waters predicted, the Mustangs took their pep-talk to heart. They drove 76 yards to the end zone in just over four minutes. Not really known for their running game, four different Mustangs ran the ball with three picking up first downs, bringing the score to 22-10.

"Keep your eyes open!" Coach Waters yelled from the sidelines, slamming his clipboard against a free spot on the bench. But even the recent Westfield score didn't dampen the crowd's mood. Most of the team smirked as a makeshift wave went around the bleachers of the stadium, even the small Westfield section joining in.

Stephen Reed looked on angrily as the Flyers took the blow. Taking to the field after the ensuing kick off he was determined to strike back hard. But despite his best efforts, he wasn’t able to click with an offence that was too used to Scott Sander’s play calling and style. Although connecting on several passes, he wasn’t able to string together a complete drive and put points on the board.

To make matters worse, his Westfield counterpart Allen Anderson seemed to find his groove, taking advantage of the Flyer’s depleted secondary to move the ball effectively through the air. With two minutes remaining in the quarter he powered a 32 yard pass into the end zone, closing the gap and bringing the score to 22-17 at the end of the third.

SCORE: FLYERS 22 MUSTANGS 17

((This is in response to the holding call made in the second quarter, of course.))

"Holding?" Alex shouted, rising to his feet. "You call that holding? Who the hell taught you to ref, you--"

"Hey, Waters! Shut your trap!" Coach Waters barked up at Alex, turning his attention from the game for a moment and pointing a finger at the former linebacker. Alex calmed down at once, responding to Coach Waters like he was still on the team, like the old power dynamic between them hadn't changed. They shared a knowing grin.

"Sorry, Coach. Knock 'em dead, Flyers!" Alex pumped a fist. Eric giggled and tugged at the corner of his shirt, and Alex took his seat in the bleachers.

"Shake it off! Shake it off! They got nothing! Let's go FLYERS!" Sam called, taking a moment to look up in the stands and wave to Eddie.

"Let's get it back!"
