Noah stood on the sidelines, trying to keep himself focused for the last Quarter. Nigel's interception was awsome, and had got everyone fired up. All that was left, was to finish strong.

"This is it fellas" Noah said to Nigel and the others, "It's do or die time! If we want it...we have to Fight for it! We gotta keep the pressure on, we gotta dig in and give em everything we got, every play until that clock says Zero!"

Noah took a deep breath, "We can do it together...One Team, One Goal...VICTORY!"

Bri huddled close to Ingrid as the wind pulled at her cheer uniform. The girls kept a close eye on the action out on the field but with the Monarchs in possesion of the ball, they took a moment to sit down and warm up. Bri watched as the ball arced through the air and was pulled down into the hands of a blue and white player. Instantly the away crowd was on it's feet. Bri cupped her hands around her mouth. "Run, Nigel! Go!" She clung to Ingrid's arm, the both of them smiling as Nigel ran the ball into the endzone. "Yeah! Go Flyers!" Bri smirked a bit at the irony that she was cheering on the one person on the team she thought didn't belong there.

Nigel barely saved himself some embarassment by actually remembering to stop running when he hit the end zone.

This was unbelievable. A touchdown. A real, honest to goodness touchdown. The kind of thing every defensive player dreams of. Even an avowed non-jock like Nigel felt the rush of scoring a big play to put his team in the lead. He felt like a million bucks, pumping his fists like a freak and waving to Kara in the stands.

He cheered with the rest of the team when Zack caught Stephen's throw for the 2-point converstion to cap off the play. His play. Then he strolled over to the cooler, looking forward to basking in a little glory and congratulations from his impressed teammates...

"Barlow! Where do you think you're going, you idiot?!?" the Coach screamed, snapping him back to reality. "Defense is back up. Stop preening and get out there!"

"Yes coach," the chastened player replied meekly, quickly tightening his helmet strap and rushing back to the field to take his position.

He's a clown, that we put down,
He's a man, that doesn't fit,
He's a king... but not in this town,
To you and me, he is a renegade.

The Defense seemed ready, they stood waiting for their chance to prove it.

"Hey..." Noah said with a sheepish grin, "...5 bucks to the first one that tackles someone into the Mascot"

Erika nudged Barrier in the ribs and smiled as they sat back down.

"Okay, I take it back. The Seacliff kids are doing great. Even the poser scored."

Barrier merely grunted in reply.

A few minutes later, the girls were on their feet again as Bryan Baxter made a leaping catch for another Flyers' touchdown.

"WOOO!!! GO BRYAN, YOU STUD YOU!" Erika cried out. Then a moment later she frowned. "What, no dance? What's with that?" She turned to her friend with a look of disappointment.

Again, Barrier just grunted.

"You're just full of answers today, aren't you?"

N his name is Nigel, he lives in Nigeria, his wife's name is Narissa, and he sells nails.

The ball snaps up, over and suddenly its not where it was supposed to go, suddenly its in the hands of the blue and white, into the hands of the only number jersey she knows by heart.

* Oh, not him again. *

"Shut up, Mercy! Go, Nigel!" Aura claps harder, yelling encouragement. "You can do it! Run!"

And he does. The brown haired boy tucks his head and moves as if he heard it, charging down the field. Heart in her throat, Aura watches as he dodges, weaves, narrowly avoiding a planned collision in the middle of the field. She cheers wildly, not minding how cold it is, that the last of her hot now cold chocolate seems to have spilled somewhere in the last couple of seconds. That's Nigel, that's Nigel and he's almost there, he's going to make it....

She whirls even as the boy crosses the line and throws her arms around the closest person, nearly exploding with happiness.

"He did it! Nigel did it!"

* Aura.... *

She hugs even harder, bouncing on the hard bleacher. "Wasn't that great? Oh, he's so wonderful! We're going to win, I know it! Wasn't Nigel great?"

* Aura.... you are so dumb. You might want to apologise. And beat a hasty retreat. *

"What?" Startled, she replies out loud and then looks up.

Kara Evans, Nigel's girlfriend, looks down. The high color in her cheeks might be wind. Aura tells herself that its just because Kara is cold. The other girls peels herself out of the sticky embrace. On the other side, the look on her brother Mike's face is priceless. "I think he's wonderful too."

Aura gulps. She shrinks back and when Nigel waves, she doesn't even try to pretend it was for her.

*... *

* Shut UP, Mercy. *

FOURTH QUARTER

Sister Mary Thomas cheered until she was hoarse. She stomped her black shoes against the bleachers, and she shook the blue and white pom-pom she held on a stick high above her head. Once, just once, she called one of the referees a heathen for his "boneheaded" call. The students sitting closest to her snickered, giggled or looked downright embarrassed by the older woman's behavior, but her enthusiasm was still infectious. Once or twice she would grab the hand of the nearest student to pray, and often it paid off.

On the third play of the quarter, third and 26, Reed completed a 37-yard pass to Aiken get to the Monarch's 22 yard line. Two plays later, they were first and goal at High Park's 10. A run up the middle by Frank Argillo brought them to the three yard line. After an incomplete pass to Miguel Rodriguez on second down, the Monarchs were called for pass interference, giving St. Joes four more downs and redeeming the heathen referee in Sister Mary Thomas' eyes. The first pass to Baxter was incomplete. The next was batted up in the air by senior co-captain Brendan Barzigan and appeared to be intercepted by first-year linebacker Bob VanAken, but he was called out of bounds. An unsuccessful running play brought up fourth down, and Reed brought on the field goal unit for a 19-yard attempt. The kick was blocked by defensive back Toby Miller, but an offside call gave the Flyers another chance. Miller and VanAken each applied good pressure, but Samantha Douglas managed to get the second kick off and through the cross bars to bring the Flyers up 31-23.

D'Amato answered again for the Monarchs. After a 40-yard kick return by Snow started the Monarch offense at the 50, D'Amato completed 5-of-8 passes, finally hitting McCullen with a fade pass into the corner of the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown with 2:00 remaining. But High Park's chances of a comeback were dampened when illegal procedure was called on McCullen for exiting and then re-entering the field to catch the ball, wiping out the play. On their last down, D’Amato fired a bullet to Greg Tudor in the end zone, but the tight end couldn’t hang on to the ball after taking a thunderous hit from Noah Ryder.

"Run it down!" the Coach called from the sidelines as his offence returned to the field. Reed nodded and kept the ball on the ground, but the Flyers weren't finished. Argillo and Anderson continued to find openings in the demoralized High Park defense, moving steadily downfield until Argillo finally crossed the goal line with twelve seconds left on the clock. Reed called for the kick, the ball once again sailing through the crossbars as Sister Mary Thomas thanked the Lord above, making the final score 38-23 for Saint Joseph’s.

FINAL SCORE:
FLYERS 38
MONARCHS 23

Kalie watches Aura and Kara and thinks about the last few days events in her head.

"I can't believe I was so stupid" she says to herself.

She watches Noah and cheers for him trying to put things out of her head but she finds it so difficult.

The defense was playing great, Nigel had their wide out covered like glue. The Tight end ran out to try to make a play

The ball went into the air straight at the Tight End. As the reciever was coming down with it, Noah had a full head of steam

"Catch or no catch..." Noah thought to himself, "..you ain't walkin' off this field"

Noah hit the kid so hard he almost knocked himself out too.

"Yeah! That's how it's done!" Layla turned and high-fived one of her field hockey teammates. Despite the cold, she was jumping up and down on the bleachers. Some Monarch fan next to her spilled his cocoa on himself and scowled at her. "Freak," she heard him mutter as he turned and made his way down the steps. Layla stopped jumping and tilted her head at the guy. Huh. So much for graceful losers. He spirits undiminished, she continued shouting, joining the cheer the squad had started.

Even though the game was theirs before the final point made it through, it still felt good to watch the ball sail through the cross bars. Reed tapped her on the back of the helmet, and Sam joined her team in celebrating the victory.

As the ball sailed through the uprights, and the final seconds ran off the clock, the team erupted in celebration.

Noah ran over helmet headbutting the rest of the Defense

"Thats what I'm talking about!! Wooooooo!!!"

Noah enjoyed the rush of the team's victory. They all had to enjoy it, cause when the rush was over they were gonna feel every bruise.

Miguel screamed like a banshee with his helmet raised in the air.

"Now that’s what I'm talking about! Hells ya!"

Seeing Noah celebrating with the defense Miguel went over to congratulate his counter parts. "WAY TO GO D!"

Miguel slugged Noah in the shoulder pad, "That's what I'm talking about baby, that guy's kid is gonna drop the ball in a big game from that hit!"

"Hey Nigel," Miguel said pointing to the DB, "one each man, that's Flyer power Sea Cliff style!"

Miguel then ran over and stood on the bench screaming to the small but jubilant group of SJS'ers, with his helmet still raised in salute. "GO FLYERS!"
