Mieri sat in the stands with her football rule book. She was watching the game and trying to figure out what the heck the players were doing all at the same time the net result being that she missed most of the first two quarters.
Mieri decided over half time she was going to give up trying to figure things out and just cheer for her new team.

Nigel listened to the coach's talk with the others, nodding along and even calling out his agreement at the appropriate times, but inside, he knew his head wasn't entirely in the game.

When the team went back out for the third, he scanned the stands, hoping to spot Kara. He didn't even know if she'd made it to the game. He'd heard a lot of disturbing things the previous night, and he hadn't had time to sort them out in his head. To figure out what was real and what was just scare-mongering.

"Yo Nigel, are you alright?" Lonnie asked from behind him. The defensive back was dressed for a game for the first time in weeks, but only as a back-up. Nigel turned and nodded.

"Yeah, I'm good. No worries, Lonnie." Nigel tried to pull himself back into focus. There'd be plenty of time to fret after the game. "Six more quarters, eh?"

"Six more and then some, Nigel. This year we're going all the way."

THIRD QUARTER

Sister Mary Thomas sat in the stands huddled between two students too polite to move away. Now and again she'd move her arm from behind her crocheted blue and white stadium blanket to wave her pom-pom on a stick, joining in whatever chant the crowd had going. As the team emerged from the lockers to run through the double line of the cheer squad, it was "Beat the Hawks!"

"Our words to God's ears!" she told the embarrassed student beside her.

The Hawk’s mascot tried to rally his team, trash-emoting to the St. Joes' fans as Jaynestown returned a 38 yard kickoff return, giving them the ball at the Flyers 44. The Flyer fans booed the bird who was content shaking a few tail feathers in their direction. On the field, Falken ran a series of driving plays getting minimal yardage, and his third down pass to Johnston was knocked away by Biff Hannigan to help the Flyers maintain their 17-6 lead.

But the Jaynestown defense was just as strong. Frank Argillo threw his helmet to the ground in disgust when the St. Joe’s offense was stopped after just three plays, needing to once again punt the ball away. The Hawks offense ran the ball back to the Flyers 40-yard line following the punt. Noah Ryder took the field and was ready for them. Enough was enough.

Tim Duncan was still smarting from being stopped by Ryder earlier in the game. Not physically, but the tight end was taking it personally. Ryder himself wasn't even sure what Duncan had said in passing, but the Hawk player had intentionally gone out of his way to bump him before the play even started. He kept it up during the snap count, attempting to stare down the defensive back and pointing a warning finger in his direction. Noah seethed. As luck would have it, Falken tossed the ball to Duncan and instinct took over. Without thinking, Noah grabbed the smaller player's facemask and pulled him down on the field, pushing on the back of the tight end's helmet for emphasis.

"Say something now!" he chided, as the flags hit the field. Argillo slammed his helmet down again after a 15-yard facemask penalty was called on St. Joe’s, and the coach followed suit with his clipboard.

"Fifteen yards!" Sister Mary Thomas yelled from the stands. "You call that excessive?" She sat back down in a huff, praying for an improvement in Noah's patience.

From there, a nine-yard pass from Falken to Starling gave the Hawks a first down at the Flyers 11. Ryder gritted his teeth about the call, but was glad the coach had left him in. The coach’s forbearance was repaid as twice the newcomer assisted in stopping the Hawk's running back. On fourth-and-three from the four, Falken's attempted pass to Johnson was intercepted by Lucas Alexander and the Flyers’ defense once again kept the Hawks out of the end zone.

Reed had been successful with passing plays, exploiting the weak links in the Jaynestown defense, their cornerbacks. Keeping with the momentum, he tossed a long throw to Bryan Baxter, the receiver finding room and tacking on a good run before being pushed out of bounds at the 38. The Hawks’ secondary seemed to pick it up after that, forcing incompletions on the next two plays. The Flyers tried to surprise them with a running play, but Argillo was downed three yards shy of a first down. Looking at fourth and three, the Flyers' quarterback called for a field goal and Samantha Douglas took to the field.

Once again, Hill made a cutthroat-like gesture, this time finding his mark. He connected with Douglas seconds after the kick, and the ball was deflected right into the hands of defensive lineman Todd Messenger. Messenger snaked down the left side of the field, the Flyers held off by his teammates as he broke away from the crowd, working the ball all the way into the end zone with a 67 yard run.

Once again the Jaynestown Hawk mocked the crowd and was met with jeers and fists full of popcorn. Schulman booted the extra point to make it a 17-13 game.

SCORE: FLYERS 17 HAWKS 13

Sam picked herself up and cursed as she watched Jaynestown hit the endzone, Tyler Hill hi-fiving and chest-bumping his teammate before looking her way, pretending to grind imaginary tears from his eyes.

"Two minutes with my good gene I'd make him cry but good." She muttered, shaking it off and heading over to the side lines.

They were only up by four, and there was still an entire quarter left in the game.

Ingrid jumped and waved and cheered with her squadmates, doing her best to keep the crowd motivated, but tensions were getting high as the third wore on. There was a growing sense that momentum was slipping away from the boys in blue.

Or maybe it was just that damn bird.

The penalty call to Noah brought everyone down, but spirits perked up when the defense rallied around him, and cheers erupted when Lucas intercepted a pass to end the threat. Soon the Flyers were back on the attack.

"Go Frank! Run like you just took their pizza!" she screamed, but then winced as the running back was tackled hard.

Then came the deflected pass, and Ingrid and her friends watched helplessly as a Hawks' lineman rumbled down the field for a shocking touchdown run.

"Someone shoot the Messenger!" cried out Maureen, noticing the Hawk player's name.

"Someone shoot that damn bird," Ingrid countered, as the Jaynestown Hawk chose that moment to single out the Flyers' cheerleaders for some special attention.

FOURTH QUARTER

"Obviously I should give up coaching!" Waters shouted from the sideline, tossing his hat to the ground. "Or maybe I should just find myself a team who wants to win!"

Fueling his fire further, Jaynestown came up with a big play on special teams. Trevor Beake recovered a Flyers’ fumble on the first punt of the quarter, giving the Hawks the ball at St. Joe’s 19. But the Flyers’ defense gave up only four yards and Schulman had his field goal attempt blocked by Biff Hannigan, keeping the home side on top by four points.

The Jaynestown defense answered back. The Flyers were unable to pick up a first down on their next possession and were forced to punt. Harrison's 35 yard kick was returned 13 yards by Fisher to set up the Hawks at St. Joe’s 41. A holding penalty backed the Hawks up to midfield, but as frustration set into the St. Joe’s defensive line, Nigel Barlow was whistled for a pass interference penalty that gave Jaynestown a first down at the Flyers 35.

Falken and Johnston connected for a 15 yard gain to the 20. Running back Pete Cook was stopped in the backfield for a five-yard loss by Noah Ryder to make it second-and-15 from the 25, the Defensive lineman holding up both hands to show he was nowhere near Cook's mask. But Falken connected with Johnston one more time for 14 yards to set up a third-and-one from the 11. Cook got the call but fumbled the handoff. Duncan pounced on the loose ball to maintain possession for the Hawks, but that brought up fourth down. Not wanting to let go of the momentum, Jaynestown coach Ray Venkman chose to keep his kicking team on the sideline. The gamble paid off, as Cook would take a toss and gain three yards on the fourth down play to place the ball at the 8 and give the Hawks a fresh set of downs.

"Four minutes!" Sanders called from the sidelines. "We just had to hold them back for four more minutes!"

"They're not in the end zone yet." Douglas replied optimistically, as Argillo displayed his impressive four lettered vocabulary.

On second down from the nine, Falken hit receiver Nick Zorn in the back of the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown with 4:10 left in the game, bringing the score to 19-17 in favor of the Hawks.

Venkman called for his special teams to take the field and Schulman lined up for the kick. Sister Mary Thomas said an extra prayer and held her breath. The ball snapped back, but Falken never set it on the ground. He flipped it to Johnston who dove in for the two-point conversion to give Jaynestown a 21-17 lead with just three minutes left in the quarter.

Coach Waters called for a time-out, but he let Biff Hannigan address the team, half fearful of what he himself might say. "Listen you mooks!" was Hanny’s opener. "We still have about three minutes. That’s plenty of time. We can bring the game back."

“That freaking convert put ‘em up by four,” one of the reserves moaned. “We need a touchdown.”

“Shut it!” Biff countered diplomatically. “I’ll tell you what. You guys go down and get three, and I’ll guarantee we get you the ball back in time for another drive.” He looked around at the rest of the defense, all of whom were nodding and pounding their fists in support of his statement. “Okay, Stephen. It’s all yours.”

"Their defensive line is tough." Reed began. "We've been doing well with a passing game, but now they're expecting that. Frank, Richie, I'm going to be counting on both of you for this. Offensive line, give 'em some room. We're going to give it a shot for two plays. That should bring us to the two-minute warning. If we can't get a down by then, Bryan or Zack just get clear enough. Run the ball out of bounds, stop the clock. Sam can handle two more kicks." He said, patting the placekicker on the helmet. "We can do this. Break on three."

"BREAK!"

Ty Cloud caught the ball at the Flyers 30, but the Jaynestown defense was already converging on him. Precious seconds ticked away as he dropped back, looking for an opening. He saw his chance when Frank Argillo dropped back as well. The receiver tossed the ball laterally to the halfback, throwing off the momentum of the Hawks’ coverage team. Argillo barely managed to stay in bounds, partially sidestepping to avoid the white line as he drove down the field, evading stray linebackers. His run was finally ended just outside the Hawks 35. It was an excellent return, but it used up fully a third of the available time, and the two-minute warning was sounded.

Reed clapped his hands and hustled down the field. A 40 yard field goal attempt was pushing it, and they did have the full two minutes remaining. Time for one, maybe two plays before they had to kick and pray they could get the ball back. He faked a handoff to Anderson, gaining three yards in the process. His second attempt with a hand off to Argillo yielded five. The defense was playing pass all the way. Reed knew he could keep moving the ball on the ground, but it would be slow and the clock would continue to run. They needed to make their move now, while they still had options. He called for special teams.

Reed exchanged a quick dialog with Douglas, the female placekicker nodding and taking her place on the field, her eyes temporarily locked on Tyler Hill who warned "You're going down!"

Douglas took a deep breath as the ball was snapped back, taking a few steps and winding up for the kick, bracing instead for Hill's impact. Before her foot could travel forward the lineman had crushed into her, knocking her to the ground, pushing down on her helmet for emphasis. Douglas spit out her mouthguard and smiled, nodding towards the end zone.

Reed never let his knee touch the ground as he took the snap, instead ducking and looking to hand the ball off to Anderson. The fullback was too well covered, but that's when the Flyers’ quarterback spotted the gap. Tucking the ball in tight, Reed drove forward into the end zone himself, the Jaynestown defense figuring out the play seconds too late.

FINAL SCORE:
FLYERS 24
HAWKS 21

When the game was over, the players and crowd cheered. Noah took off his helmet, holding it over his head.

While they had won the game, Noah still felt like he owed one to everyone for losing his head on the field. Noah knew exactly how to repay the debt.

"Detention...here I come!" Noah said as he ran towards the Hawks sideline.

Noah ran by at full speed, ripping the Hawk's mascot's head off of the peron wearing in. He ran towards the Flyer's section with half the Hawk's chasing him, throwing the Hawk's head into the Flyer's crowd yelling wildly the whole time.

Noah ran by the crowd with his hands raised "Braveheart" style, before running straight to the lockeroom to get away from the Hawk's mob.

Stephen was quiet and calm, his face unreadable and his shoulders squared. Some people had told him in the past that he took the games too seriously but he didn't think so. These games were battles to him and he felt like the leader of the "troops" that were his teammates and losing was painful and humiliating to him. If... No, when they won, he could celebrate. For now, it was game time and there was no room for joking around.

The quarterback turned and looked at the crowd. Somewhere up there was his old Seacliff friends JD and Ash and he wanted to make sure, since they came all this way to visit him and Bri, that they'd get to see a victory.

Sam picked herself up and raised both hands in victory, before checking the Jaynestown sideline for Hill. She pointed to him when she saw him glance in their direction, and mocked crying.

The Hawks had just kissed the championship good-bye.

She laughed as Noah took off after their obnoxious mascot, then went to find her friends in the blue and white crowd that came onto the field.

Ty jogged to the locker room trying to aboid the rush of his teammates trying to tackle him. "Nice game Frank." Ty slapped him on the back as he ran towards the locker room.

Ty cracked up laughing at the sight of Noah throwing the head part of the mascot into the crowd. He sprinted for noah in the locker room to crack up laughing with him. He banged his helmet against his hands while screaming at the top of his lungs. "S-J-S!

He'd seen very little of the game; just the better part of the fourth. It had taken quite a while to find an alternate way in when he realized they were going to balk at letting him keep his raiper, even though it was in a case and not a scabbard at his back. Plus, he'd arrived late to begin with. Sure, everyone had said he had to go, but, well....American football?
It had been interesting seeing it, at least, if nothing else, not that he understood a whole lot. The crowd had been very interesting....the intensity was very familiar, but the feeling, the mood, so different from football matches he was used to attending. He'd heard the american game described in gladitorial terms, and he fully agreed with them now.

When the game ended, and the jubilation of victory washed the crowd, he couldn't help himself joining in the cheers. "Andale! Go Flyers!"
Then it happened. He could not remember, after, if the idea had been his, or if one of the souls with a sense of humor, had introduced the idea. He only knew that pure clarity washed him, and instinct bred through generations of souls (his included) propelled him into action. The case was unlocked and opened in the tiniest moment, rapier out, hop, hop, jump, THRUST.....

He landed on a railing, precariously balanced, sword raised with the giant bird head impaled and high in the air. Laughs and cheers broke out, and tears almost came to his eyes as something he had never expected on this side of the Atlantic hit him dead on.
"I'm one of them," he thought in wonder. "This moment, right now, I belong."
He flung the giant head back into the crowd, hopping down and moving to get the weapon case. The voices in his head resumed something resembling their normal chorus, the crowd continued their celebration, and reality intruded on his mood.
"Security will kick me out. They may never let me come back. The school will probably yell at me, I may get in trouble and I've only been here a week."
A rare grin slid over his face.
"Very worth it." He might like American football after all.
