Retiring from SJS

Retiring from SJS
The time may come when your character is no longer a good fit for SJS, either because of the character’s roleplay or because of your own feelings about the character. This brief guide will outline the various “retirement paths” we encourage for your character.
  • Saint Joseph School Alumni: the Alumni SG is primarily intended to house characters who have aged, grown up, and graduated from SJS. If you do not have any plans to join another SG with the character, you are welcome to ask for a transfer to Alumni, so that you can continue to access the base and the comm system. Alumni is for primarily inactive characters.

Saint Joseph School Chronicles: the Chronicles SG is designed to hold characters who have been a long-standing presence in the social canon of SJS, but who are “played out” for their players. If you are done telling your character’s story, but do not wish to age them and graduate, you are welcome to apply for a transfer into Chronicles. Chronicles is for primarily inactive characters.

Groups within the SJS Coalition: the coalition groups form a myriad of character options. There are street-level SGs, full-fledged SGs, a program at a local university for super-powered students, and others. If your character is leaving school and you wish to remain active both as a gameplay and roleplay character, we’d encourage you to check them out. Be aware, though, that each group within the coalition has different guidelines for joining.
SJS makes no demands of our coalition partner groups besides those posted here, but for characters in Alumni or Chronicles, there are certain expectations. In return for meeting those expectations, characters in Alumni or Chronicles are given some perks. You can take a more detailed look at these groups by clicking below, where you will find a full list of expectations and benefits, as well as details for transferring your character. Please note, Saint Joseph School Alumni and Chronicles are not places for players to put a character simply because they are bored or unsure what to do. Characters of that type are encouraged to ask for extended leave instead. They can remain on the roster up to 180 days while you decide. Though it is possible to return to the main SG from Alumni or Chronicles, any abuse of these groups will be extremely irksome to the SG leadership and may affect your ability to use these groups in the future.

Saint Joseph School Alumni
Saint Joseph School Alumni was created to give players in the SJS community a place to retire their high-level characters while still retaining access to the SJS base and the comm system. Characters in Alumni are graduates of Saint Joseph School who have not gone on to join another active group (which is to say, the character is retired, both from play and from roleplay). Characters who have graduated but plan to remain active in roleplay are encouraged to join one of the SJS coalition groups, or any other SG on Infinity. Characters in SJS Alumni have the following rights, privileges and expectations placed on them:
  • Characters in the SJS Alumni supergroup do not count towards the alt policy.
  • There is no activity policy for characters in Alumni.
  • They will retain forum access (though each will be evaluated separately to keep any special forums access they may currently have). If the character phases into true retirement, your forum access may be suspended. Any such suspension of forum privileges may be petitioned to the Student Council.
  • Characters in Alumni are no longer students of Saint Joseph School. As such, they are expected to wrap up their in-game and forum storylines and update their backstory thread in Student Information to include notification of their graduation.
  • Alumni characters should not be actively roleplayed characters in-game. Exceptions can be made if the character is specifically requested by another player to participate in a storyline or to attend an SJS event, but these occurrences should be uncommon. Membership in Alumni is predicated on the idea that the characters have graduated from SJS, and so any roleplay they do engage in should reflect this. Their relationships with currently enrolled students must adhere to the same standards we expect from our coalition member groups.
  • Characters in Alumni are welcome to join organized taskforces or other gameplay events if there is room for them, just like any alt. There are no restrictions on the gameplay of these characters so long as that gameplay does not interfere with roleplay.
  • These characters are not “NPCs” for Saint Joseph School. They are former students, and should no longer be considered part of SJS canon except in the memories of currently enrolled students.
Players can request a character transfer to Alumni by notifying the Student Council. You should already have an idea of how you want to end your character’s tenure at SJS, and will be expected to make changes to the character’s backstory thread within a short time of the character’s transfer.
  • To gain approval for a transfer to SJS Alumni, you must…
    …be off probation.
    …be level 40 or above.
…have no plans to continue as an active roleplay character.
Under extremely unusual conditions, it is possible to move a character back from Alumni to the main SJS group. Such a move will need the approval of the Student Council and a compelling reason; after all, your character has graduated, and it’s hard to un-graduate without some really interesting circumstances.

Saint Joseph School Chronicles
SJS Chronicles was created to be a place for active players to place long-standing characters into semi-retirement. Characters retired to Chronicles are not graduating; they are remaining enrolled IC but withdrawing from active roleplay, blending into the background of the 150 other kids at SJS that are present but not played by PCs. The characters in Chronicles will have the following rights, privileges and expectations placed on them:
  • Characters in the SJS Chronicles supergroup do not count towards the alt policy.
  • There is no activity policy for characters in Chronicles.
  • They will retain forum access (though each will be evaluated separately to keep any special forums access they may currently have).
  • Characters in Chronicles are still members of Saint Joseph School. As such, they may continue to expand upon their storylines or participate in roleplay threads on the forum at the discretion of their player. They are expected to update the periodic changes into their backstory thread in Student Information the same as any other student.
  • Although forum participation is allowed (and in some ways encouraged) to maintain ties to the community, the Chronicles student should not be an actively roleplayed character in-game. Exceptions can be made if the character is specifically requested by another player to participate in a storyline or to attend an SJS event, but these occurrences should be uncommon. Membership in Chronicles is predicated on the idea that the character is fading to the community background, in favor of a new, active student.
  • Characters in Chronicles are welcome to join organized taskforces or other gameplay events if there is room for them, just like any alt. There are no restrictions on the gameplay of these characters so long as that gameplay does not interfere with roleplay.
  • These characters are not “NPCs” in the strictest sense: they still have a player, and other members of the SJS community are expected to consult with the character by PM before writing them into any story or plotline.
Characters must submit an application by PM to Mimi to be considered for transfer into SJS Chronicles. Your application should be thought-out and should address why you feel your character should be moved into the group. Though each applicant will be reviewed case-by-case, and given an equal review, this group is not for everyone.
  • The ideal character for inclusion in SJS Chronicles…
…has been enrolled at SJS for at least one year.
…currently holds or has held Upperclassman rank.
    …is level 45 or above.
…is well established and recognizable in the SJS canon, both in-game and on the forums.
    …has stagnated for the player.
Finally, it is of course possible that characters in Chronicles might again become revitalized for their players in the future. To that end, characters in Chronicles can petition the Student Council to be restored to full membership back in the main SJS supergroup. Players who move their character back from Chronicles must comply with the alt policy of their rank.
