The Clash of Inevitability

Post by Mighty Electron »

Mighty Electron marches down the halls of St. Joes with firm and definite strides. A hard look was on his face that didn't look entirely familiar. No, something was different today. Biff tried to make some joke as he saw him walk past, but Lucas just held up a hand, speaking not a word, but carrying all the tones of "I don't want to hear it right now." Biff laughed nervously so as not to lose face, and turned back to his locker.

There, Lucas thought to himself, and stepped up his pace slightly, walking towards his target. The boy closed his locker and looked up just as Lucas got there. "Lucas..." was all Jai had a chance to say before Lucas raised a hand to silence him.

"Jai," he said with a tone that hinted slightly of hostility, "hear me out before you say anything." Lucas took a deep breath, and stared at Jai as he continued: "Listen, you know and I know that I like Tara very much. The whole school knows that. We aren't dating yet, I know, but I like her a lot, and she likes me too. Of course you see the problem here with you coming into the picture and flirting with her and putting on your little charade." Jai started to respond, but Lucas stopped him again. "Wait! I don't know exactly what it is, but there's something about you that I don't trust. Now, I'm usually a really caring and understanding guy... I'm friendly to just about everyone, and I think everyone deserves a chance. But unfortunately, you've about gone and crossed the line in my books. Because you know, I don't think you really understand what's going on here. Either that, or you do know and you just don't care. Okay, so here's how it is: I like Tara, she likes me, and you claim to like Tara, but in all honesty I don't think you do. Not like I do. I think that she's nothing more than a feather in the cap for you, someone who you heard was the hardest girl to get, so of course you wanted to try to get her. Well newsflash, when you do stuff like that, PEOPLE GET HURT. Not necessarily psyically, but emotional pain hurts a lot more, trust me." Lucas paused to take a breath and looked back at Jai. "I'm a gentleman, and I don't want to see anyone get hurt as a result of this. I also don't want to cause a fight over this whole situation. Nobody wants to make this into a contest or anything... contrary to what you might think, Tara's not some prize to be won. She's a real person, a living caring person, and deserves to be treated as such. Like I said, I don't want to see this come to a fight or anything, but I will not simply stand idly by and let you steal the girl of my dreams. I'm standing up for who I care about... for what I believe in. So, I guess we have a problem then, you and I. How do you propose we resolve that?"

Lucas crosses his arms and waits for Jai to respond...

Jai stood and looked at the older boy. As Lucas spoke, he saw electricity in his eyes. And he listened, trying to understand the emotion and the pain and the guarded anger that spilled out in a torrent. And then the blond boy was done, crossing his arms, waiting for Jai to conjure up a response.

"Lucas, yuh talkin' like a crazy puhson." Jai smiled to try to disarm the boy's anger. But the look on Lucas' face told the carib boy that again, he had misinterpreted the seriousness of the situation. Jai struggled to find the words, feeling the hairs on his arms stand up from the growing electrical field. "I don' know why yuh tink dose tings about meh, but is fuh certain dat yuh do. I didn' go lookin' fuh nothin, but I ain' gonna deny dat I foun' wat I foun'."

Others had started to gather now, watching, whispering. It wasn't the kind of attention that Jai ever liked. It drew so much attention to his alien-ness, to be here arguing with this tall blond white boy.

Jai set his jaw. This wasn't going to go anywhere like this. He looked again at Lucas. "I don' know wat I ken tell yuh, Lucas. I ain' about ta stand hyuh and tell yuh everytin' dat's been said between me an' Tara. Da tings yuh say show me dat yuh don' know anytin' 'bout meh, an' probly yuh don' wanna learn. But if yuh goin' ta get all bol'face wit me, I ain' jus' gonna take dat forevuh. So mebbe I jus' walk away now, neh?"

Lucas simply stared for a moment at the younger boy. "Do you think this is some kind of joke? Because it's not funny," he finally said. "Ok, no, I don't know that much about you, and no, you don't know that much about me," he continued, "but that's not what this is about. This is about Tara. And I don't think that just walking away is going to help either. It's not going to solve the problem we've found ourselves in. This isn't going to fix itself... we need to work through it, and discuss things. You, me, and Tara, we have to sit down and fix this. Because if we don't... then the storm will just keep brewing, and nobody wants that to happen, do they?"

The caribbean boy stared at Lucas, almost dumbfounded. "Lemmie jus' say I don' know why dis be any a yuh business. But yuh take da time an' trouble ta come make us bot' look a fool in front'a alla dese people. And yuh back-chat ain' gon' stop until yuh hear wat I got ta say, an den mebbe yuh let me walk outta here, neh?" Ginga frowned. "I don' tink yuh understan' me, Lucas."

Mighty Electron norrowed his eyes and waited.

The carib boy sighed. "I say I don' know wat yuh talkin' 'bout, an' I mean dat. I spent da las' t'ree weeks wit the gyul an' she nevuh said a word about yuh."

Lucas blinked, his head jerking back a little.

Ginga continued. "I t'ought at firs' dat she had eyes fuh da Roostah. An' as yuh say, da gyul deserves ta be happy, neh? So I spent two weeks tryin' ta shove da two a dem togethuh." Jai laughed a little at the memory.

If he noticed the change in Lucas' face, it did not register.

"An' finally, she tell me dat she ain' gone coki-eyed fuh da Roostah, so I drop de subjec' an' jus' get back ta tryin' ta keep herself from gettin' killed by de freakshow. An' den, las' week, we was talkin' 'bout it all, she an' I, an' sometin' happen dat I didn' expec'."

Lucas balled his fists, felt his stomach tighten.

The carib boy just kept talking. "We bot' realize we felt dese tings 'bout one anodduh. Is jus' dat simple, an' it happen jus' dat quick. An' yuh bring dis gun talk about it ta me, an' I don' know wat I ken say ta help yuh. But I tell yuh right now, tabanca-- Tara make me swear ta nevuh be ashamed a wat we got, an' so i ain' gon' be."

The two boys stared at one another for a moment.

Jai spread his hands. "But if dat mean we gotta fall out, well den dat wat it mean. So yuh gon' just stand dere an' give me da long-eye, or we gon' move it along?"
Jump an' wine!

Mighty Electron just stood there for a moment, collecting his thoughts, when he realized that his fists were clenched tight, little bolts of electricity shooting around them. He unclenched them a little, and tried to calm himself down, but it wasn't any use. He was just too upset.

"Okay... well, maybe you speak the truth," Lucas said finally, "and if that be so, then maybe this is a lot more complicated than I thought." He paused for a moment, then began again: "On the other hand, maybe it's actually real simple and I've just been played for the fool the whole way. Either way, I guess we don't have anything more to say to each other right now, do we?" He turned to walk away, then stopped, half-turned back, and said "I'll have to talk to Tara about this. Keep in mind though that this is not over. Far from it. I'll be seeing you around, I'm sure."

And with that, Mighty Electron turned and walked away down the hall as the small crowd that had gathered, perhaps hoping for a fight, began to disperse. He left the school and leapt into the air, flying away. He needed to think. He needed to clear his head. Tara couldn't see him like this, all upset. He headed for his quiet little cove in Striga Isle. At least there I can try to relax, and think all this through, he thought to himself. He couldn't help but hear Neil Young's voice ringing in his ears, singing:

But only love can break your heart
Try to be sure right from the start
Yes only love can break your heart
What if your world should fall apart?

He shook his head and tried to push such thoughts from his mind, trying to convince himself that things weren't as bad as they seemed... trying to tell himself that Tara does still like him, and that things would be alright. He wasn't sure how much he believed it, but tried to keep telling himself that anyways, as he finally reached the cove and descended down to sit in quiet contemplation for a while and try to figure things out. When he'd calmed down enough, maybe in a couple of hours, he'd go and see Tara, and talk to her about all this. Surely we could work something out he thought as he sat down and stared at the beautiful sky and ocean, much the same as he and Tara had done together such a short time before...

She lands lightly enough, all things considered. Under her boots the ground compresses with the impact, crunching softly. The shock is enough to jar her teeth. She’d forgotten how unforgiving Striga can be.

Yeah. She’s really looking forward to this conversation.

She’s already striding forward though, almost before her feet are on the ground. She faces the worst that Paragon has every day. She is not going to flinch from this.

The small rocks shift under her heels, threatening to twist an ankle. A dark impulse wonders if that’s a good idea. She can have Lucas put his hands on… no. That is a silly idea. She doesn’t need to be rescued and she’s not going to put him in that position. She is not a coward.

Really.

She follows the trail from memory, dropping to the soft sand with a whisper. She tries not to think as she turns the corner, trailing one hand over the rough rock face. He is there as she knew he would be, almost like a painting made real. She hesitates for that heartbeat, betrayed.

Looking at his clean profile against the sky she suddenly understands something she didn’t before.

Each of them has their own place, separate and apart. Jade at the top of the world, with the moonrise in his eyes. Jai standing in cool water, his hands so full of frightening life.

Lucas waiting here, with the sunset burning in his hair.

He turns to watch as she walks up. The look in his eyes sinks barbs into her breathing, catches the panic in her throat. Her hands ball into fists, defensive suddenly, and angry. This is not her fault. Why does she feel this way?

“Lucas. What’s this about you and Jai fighting in the halls?”
"So pay attention to me; I don't talk for my health."
"I want you on my team."
"... So does everybody else."

Still thinking about the recent turn of events, Lucas stared off into the sunset trying to collect himself. This place always helped to calm him, and it was doing a good job so far. He still wasn't completely back to normal though... who could be after such a shock?

He was a little startled when he thought he heard something behind him. He turned, and saw a figure standing there: Tara. His first reaction was anger as he thought about her with Jade... and with Jai... and he couldn't help but feel jealous. Lucas looked into her eyes and saw the the anger... the hurt there. He tried to find words, but couldn't seem to find any. Tara was the first to break the silence. "Lucas. What's this about you and Jai fighting in the halls?" she asked.

Maybe it was her eyes, maybe it was her graceful movements, maybe it was the peace and serenity of the cove and the sunset, maybe it was simply the happy memories they had shared together that suddenly came flooding back, but whatever it was, Lucas felt his anger melt away. He wondered how he could even be angry with someone he liked so much.

"Tara..." he began, then felt his voice trail off. He took a breath, then began again: "We... we weren't really fighting, just talking." He sighed, then continued: "What's this all about, anyway? I mean, I'd heard about Jade, but I thought that was over long ago... I thought you were just friends. Then... well, I thought things were really starting to happen with us. I really like you and you know that, and I know that you were really starting to like me too." Tara started to say something, then didn't as Lucas kept going: "But then Jai came along... I heard rumours that you two were dating, but I didn't want to believe it. I couldn't believe it. Then I asked him about it, and he didn't really confirm or deny anything, simply saying that you never said anything about me, and that he 'couldn't deny what he felt.'"

He paused again, and looked deep into Tara's eyes, trying to contain his hurt, his pain, his overflow of feelings. Certain that she could probably see right through his barriers, he continued, thinking he might as well get out what he had to say: "So what is it when? Tara, you know that I like you very much... more than I've ever liked anyone before, and more than I really know how to explain. I know that you like me too. But when I hear about these other guys... it... it hurts."

A single tear fell down his cheek. "I just don't know what to do. I mean, I asked you to be with me, to be more than friends, to take a risk with me... and still haven't heard a definite response. I thought maybe you just needed a little time to think. But then Jai... and Jade... well, I just don't know anymore! Like I said, I like you very much. So much so that I want you to be happy, above all else. I would love to date you, to be the one to take risks with you. If that's what you want too, then that's great. If not... well then I'll just have to accept that. I would hope that if we're nothing more, that we could always at least be friends. Maybe you'd rather be with Jai, or with Jade, or maybe you'd rather be alone right now. You know I don't want to put you on the spot, but I can't just wait on a string like this. I can't play this game. I need to know, so that all of us can move past this."

Lucas stood up and walked over in front of Tara, taking her hands in his and looking into her eyes. "Please Tara... tell me what's going through your mind. Tell me what you want. Tell me what you feel. I need to know the truth."

Truth. Tell me what you feel.

She has no idea.

She opens her mouth to say exactly that, to spit the words in defiant protest. She's been saying it a lot lately as if it's some kind of mantra. She doesn't know, she doesn't know, she doesn't want to know, she doesn't want... to admit it.

His eyes are so hurt. She can see him struggling to be honest, in the face of all the things she's never been able to say. A good friend, Lucas. His fingers are tentative in hers, not demanding, not forcing anything. No pain in his touch.

A good friend.

"Lucas," she starts, "I don't..." She takes a deep breath. "I don't know why you're my friend, but I'm glad you are."

"But." His fingers squeeze hers and oddly, something in his eyes eases.

"But. I can't... be who you want me to be. Whoever that is." She holds up a hand to his lips, to forestall whatever protest he might want to make. "Even if it's just who you think I am. But I'm not that person, Lucas. I never was."

She takes another deep breath, thinking miserably that taking on Nemesis is easier than this. "You asked me to take a risk with you - and I can't. All the places I go," she says, "you do not belong there. Too much..." She is going to say one word, finds another, "...risk. I worry for you, Lucas."

"Hey, I can take care of myself." Pride flashes in his eyes, tightens his expression.

"I know," she replies. She can't ever manage to say anything right. "But I still worry."

"You don't worry about him, do you?"

She looks at him then, tightening her fingers around his. "No. I don't. Jai belongs where he is. Follows me where I go, even when I don't want him to." She laughs then, half strangled. All the places that Jai has followed, none of them close to safe. "A piece of me, is Jai Marchan."

The words leave her lips before she thinks about them. For a heartbeat longer she doesn't hear them but then they land like feathers on her heart, sink into her blood. A piece of her, is Jai. Darkness to her light. Light to her darkness. Blazing with warmth where she is so cold.

She doesn't know what her expression says, but panic.. oh, she is panicked now. Lucas is the one to look away first from whatever he sees. She snatches her fingers out of his and blindly turns to run.

Tell me what you feel.

She is suddenly afraid she knows.

A piece of me, is Jai Marchan. The words that Tara spoke drove nails into Lucas' heart with every syllable. Her face looked of near terror after she said it, and then she turned and ran, running out of the cove.

He wanted to go after her, he wanted to ask her what she meant, and what this means for the future, but he could find no words. He couldn't make himself move. He felt as if the nails that Tara had driven into his heart were real, and that the life was draining out of him as he stood there. For once, there were wounds that he could not heal... and he just stood there, and watched her go. It was over. Tara had made her wishes known, and there wasn't a place for him there.

Lucas sat down on a flat rock, the feelings welling up inside of him. Feelings of sadness, of shock... but then feelings of anger began to return. All the places I go, you do not belong there. Too much... risk, she had said. I worry for you, Lucas. What did she know? Nobody needed to worry about him! She spoke as if he wasn't competent, wasn't capable! The fury began to rise inside of him and he leapt up and began to pace the cove as he pondered her words. "How dare she insult my abilities?" he muttered to himself. "I could take on that pathetic Jai any day!" A slight grin came to Lucas' lips as he thought about besting Jai in the arena, and what it would feel like as he begged for mercy under the power of Mighty Electron!

Lucas shook his head all of a sudden, purging such thoughts from his mind. He wondered what had come over him... and sat back down on the rock. He looked off into the sunset and realized that he didn't enjoy it as much anymore. How could he? "Why do nice guys always finish last?" Lucas thought to himself as he just leaned back against the rock, closed his eyes, and tried to think of happier things.

Try as he might though, his thoughts always turned back to Tara, and to Jai. Jai... he saw red every time he thought the name. Everything was going just fine until he showed up! Why'd he have to come ruin everything? He thought of challenging the carib boy to a duel, but realized that would solve nothing now, and would only make Tara angry. No... he said that he would respect her wishes, and he would do just that. It didn't mean he had to like Jai, and he definitely didn't... but he would at least try to be somewhat civil with him, and of course would try to maintain at least his friendship with Tara. She would like it that way.
