Diyar picked up his helmet, tempted to slam it on the bench before following his teammates into the locker room. This was NOT how my first football game was supposed to go, he thought. He looked to his left. Singleton was there, the new defensive end from Prescott or Preston or whereever. He smacked his free hand into his shoulder, getting his attention.

THIRD QUARTER
Having lost the original opening toss meant Reed's offensive line would get to take the field first coming out of the lockers. The Coach's words stung everyone, especially because they were true.

"Shut -em-down, Defense, Shut-em-down!" The Friars cheer squad lead the crowd in chanting, but Reed had other ideas. He huddled the team up and called the first play. The ball was snapped and he faked a hand-off to Bartel, while Baxter and Aiken tried to get clear. Bryan Baxter saw an opening, a small tear in the Friars defensive line, thanks to some blocking by Jordan. Putting his head down, he turned on the steam. Small and fast gave him the advantage of being left virtually uncovered in the end zone. Reed faked a pass towards Aiken, then tossed a perfect spiral which landed squarely in Baxter's hands.

#88 raised his hands in victory for the first score of the season, celebrating with the intrepid Flyer fans who had found their way to the rival Catholic School campus. Samantha Douglas trotted onto the field, high-fiving her teammate before Will McCarty snapped the ball back. The ball sailed between the uprights bringing the score quickly 7-21.

"Good eyes Baxter, Good eyes, Reed!" The coach called. "Defense, keep it going!"

Despite the Coach warning him about excessive roughness, Darweshi Brown seemed out for blood. The Friars were known more for their passing game then running, and sure enough that's what they tried. With both receivers boxed in and Delavar closing in fast, Friars Quarterback Adam Bishop had no choice but to opt for the hand off. Coach Waters watched as Brown ran into St. Augustine's #38 - Tom Marks, tossing another player aside like a rag doll after the whistle blew. Marks had hit the ground with a sickening thud, the boy staying down long enough for the coaches to be called onto the field, but luckily the wind returned to his lungs before too long and he managed to walk off the field with some assistance.

"BROWN! Benched!" The coach bellowed, throwing his hat against the ground. He'd have a good, long talk with the boy later. For now, he tried to concentrate on the game. With two failed pass attempts later, the Flyers offensive line once again took their positions.

The Friars were wising up, now concentrating on covering both Baxter and Aiken. Reed smiled. They were counting on a pass. He knew the runners were near unguarded. McCarty snapped the ball back, then collided with the Friar's middle linebacker Ned Christianson, holding the bigger boy at bay. Reed grabbed the ball, faking to Dubois, who ran a fake out as if he did in fact have the ball, while Reed had handed the ball off to Bartel. Bartel broke away from the pack and gained thirty yards for another notch on his belt before being shoved out of bounds. After an incomplete pass to Aiken in the end zone, Reed tried the same play, only this time, handing the ball off to Antoine Dubois. The veteran#39 drove the ball down the rest of the line, making a dive into the end zone as the official raised his arms to signify a touch down.

Samantha Douglas waited for the snap. Stephen placed the ball on the ground, the crowd now in better spirits. The sudden shift in weather kicked up the wind, but luckily Douglas compensated and watched as the extra point sailed in, closing up the gap a bit.

Score : Flyers 14, Friars 21.

Ty Cloud clapped his hands together and nodded to the Defense. "That a way! That's how we play defense!" He gave Marks a smirk as he jogged to his own sideline. God, he hated that guy.

The defense switched out, and Diyar passed Reed with a quick smack to the back on his way in. He pulled off his helmet, grinning a little bit, the mood somewhat better now that they had scored and stopped the Friars from scoring again.

He sat down, looking to his left at Dar. The big teen was angry, and Diyar was almost scared the guy would crush the face mask on his helmet the way he had it gripped. He bent down, picking up his water bottle. He was hot, he was tired...

This sure ain't a cross-country meet, that's for sure...

He scanned up and down the bench for Singleton, hoping to get some more coordination before the next time they hit the field.

After giving a well-deserved high-five to Antoine, Luke felt miles better. Another drive like that and we're set.

Also, Dar won't be f@#$ing up our plays anymore and he took down half the Friar's good players with him. Fourth quarter's lookin' better and better.

Franky: "What, two legs?"
Luke: "Nah, two nice legs."

Mieri sat on the edge of her seat watching the game. It was fantastic now that she understood the rules. The only bad part of the night was the rain she was going to need a blow dryer and a clean set of cloths before going to D tonight.

Bri kicked a leg up in the air, grinning and cheering at the crowd. "Yeah! Go Flyers!" She quickly stood upright, her arms straight at her sides.

"Ready? Okay! 5,6,7,8!" Immediately, she stepped to the right and thrust her right pom-pom out to her left, hoping the rest of the squad was falling in step behind her.

After running back to the line after yet another unsucessful play, Luke found himself completely and utterly distracted by the Flyer's cheerleading team. Damn, I love this school... While watching them dance their little routines, Luke jogged slower and slower and...

A Friar bumped his shoulder and growled as he moved back to his line. Luke snapped back into reality and ran back into position.

Franky: "What, two legs?"
Luke: "Nah, two nice legs."

Damian got up from the bench, and walked over to Diyar and sat beside him.

"Hey Diyar, you were right...lets cme up with something. This worked for me when I was at Prescott, maybe it will work for us...since you and I both are fast.

Damian contiued to explain to Diyar, an idea he hoped would get thm on the same page as the Flyers tried again to score.

Diyar took another drink from his water bottle, taking in what the more experienced DE was saying.

Fist, I stay...Point, and I go...and Cutthroat...

"Cutthroat, quarterback dies. Got it."

Damien grinned a bit, smacking Diyar on the back. "Let's do it."

FOURTH QUARTER:

The rain started to fall more steadily. The crowds in the stands huddled, but few left the stadium. Both teams also seemed unfazed by the weather, if anything, it seemed to motivate the Friars even further. On their first possession of the quarter, St. Augustine quarterback tossed a perfect spiral to sophomore wide out Chris Tempal. Cyrus Fairchild stood ready. His eyes followed the quarterback and he hung back anticipating the pass. An offensive guard drove right passed the newcomer only to be stiff armed by Oliver Fox who then collided with Tempal seconds after the Friar gained possession of the ball.

Unfortunately, the Friar momentum was still in high gear. Two plays later, Friar fullback David Kingsman was in the endzone., the extra point going wide, but bringing the score back up in favor of the Friars, 14-27. And despite the rain, the Friars were back on fire. Coach Jeff Waters watch as the defensive line skulked back to the bench. "Fairchild! What were you, sleeping out there?" He hollered. "This isn't friggin' Rugby! This is football! If you want to play it? You forget this "obstruction" bull and learn to block! Cloud! Stop planning your next ballet routine, because you'll actually need to make a play before you use it! Singleton! Trying to blind the opposition with your shiny state ring only works on sunny days! Did aliens abduct my defensive line and leave you screw-ups in their place? I want to see some defense actually being played!"

On the field, Reed called the team into a huddle. "We're two down, but we can bring this back. Their defense is getting tired, the last two plays have been sloppy. I think we can pull it back. Remember last season? 212? They're not taking this one without a fight! Baxter, you go long. Jordan, stay short, you're the back up." The Flyers receiver stared at him.

"Back up? We're into the wind this quarter." #88 reminded the quarterback.

"If you can get open, I'll hit you." Reed said with confidence. Bryan Baxter smiled and nodded in response. "Two-Twelve. Steam!" He shot back, with a clap of his hands. Taking his spot on the line, he visualized the play before the snap came, plotting out different scenarios to be able to break away. Just as Reed anticipated, the Friar's were expecting a running play or short toss - double covering Brandon Jordan. Baxter siezed the opportunity and broke away from the pack as Reed fired off the ball with all his might. The pass warbled a little with the wind, but Baxter compensated for it, keeping his eye on the ball Catching the throw while still in momentum on the 30 yard line, the Friar's defense had no chance in catching the quick running boy.

"All them laps finally paid off!" Coach bellowed as Baxter crossed into the end zone. "Douglas, you're up, move!"

"What do you say, Sam?" The quarterback asked the place kicker as she took the field. Off on the sideline, a little cyclone of paper had been blowing in a circle.

"I'll give it what I got." She said uncertainly. "But the wind keeps shifting direction. I wouldn't even know which way to compensate."

"Going for two." He agreed. Will McCarty snapped the ball back as the Friar's closed in. Douglas wound up for the kick as a decoy, and Reed faked a hand-off to Dubois, shifting the defense left while handing off the ball to Bartel, who dove over the top into the end zone for the two point conversion, bringing the score 22-27.

"If we played like that in the first half, we'd have had a shot." Rayburn groused as they left the field, as the clock showed under two minutes left.

"Two minutes is plenty of time." Damian Singleton stated under his breath. "We have plenty of time." The Flyers caught a break as the kick off Bill Harrison's foot was carried into the wind, the Friar receiver catching it and being shoved out of bounds shy of the 35 yard line. Singleton had played a decent variety of positions for Prescott, being one of the few players to start on both the offensive and defensive lines. St. Augustine had known it as well, keeping the majority of plays on the opposite side of the field, but the former Panther wasn't discouraged. They may not have been "his" team yet, but he was there to play, he was there to win. "Blitz." As soon as the snap went off, he plowed through two guards, catching the quarterback off guard as the ball barely left his finger tips. Delevar managed to snare the loose ball mid air before it hit the ground. Boxed in himself, Fairchild called over to him, and Delevar laterally tossed the ball over. Fairchild smirked. The rules wo for blocking in American football might have been foreign to him, but running the ball? That was universal. The crowd for both sides stood up, the majority of voices calling for a block, the Flyers crew screaming "RUN!" A Friar's guard was closing in fast, Fairchild could see him making a dive out of the corner of his eye, and he waited for the feel of the collision. What he didn't see out of the corner of his other eye was Ty Cloud. Cloud had made a bee line for the offensive lineman and made a dive of his own, colliding mid-air with the Friar just as he made a grab for Fairchild's mid-section. The small Flyers crowd, lead by the cheer squad roared with appreciation as Fairchild spun, avoiding the tangle of two bodies and crossed into the end zone.

FINAL SCORE: Flyers -28 Friars -27

Damian went to the bench only to hear the coach talk about his State ring. Damian looked at the coach then the rest of the team.

"Ill show you how I got this ring coach" Damian said under his breath.

He went back onto the field with the rest of the defense and took his stance...this time in full zone. He read the QB, the RB...and there it was...what he needed. The RB's toes pointed to him, and the QB rose on the tip of his toes...

"He's dropping back" Damian thought..."I'll cut in short." Damian looked over to Diyar, he waite for his attention, and he gave him the signal. QB dies. Diyar shook his head in agreement. On the snap, Damian blitzed in right behind the defensive tackle, running over the guard and tackle, the QB was in his sights...and it was too late for him.

After that last touchdown, Luke just about lost it. He was yelling at the top of his lungs, various cocky remarks that don't need mentioning. He even joined in the team-wide huddle of hi-fives. As he danced off the field with the others, Luke realized that joining the football team was a really good idea.

After he took off the heavy equipment, showered, and changed into his usual leather jacket, Luke left for the Pocket D on a high note.

Franky: "What, two legs?"
Luke: "Nah, two nice legs."

The Cornerback lay on the ground grasping his shoulder and watching Cyrus make the rest of the run into the endzone. He musta been Fu**ing crazy to make that dive into that dude, he played off instinct. He rolled over and sat up. Damn, my shoulder is killing me.

"Way to go Cyrus!" He hollered.
