Flyers Vs. Paladins, October 17, 2008

Post by Blitzen »

PREGAME:

The stadium wasn't packed as it had been for homecoming, but there was still a decent sized crowd on hand despite the thick, black clouds which had peppered the day with rain showers. Coach Waters knew the players were still on a high about last week's win over the Eagles, which they managed to pull off even after having found out they were losing Ty for the rest of the season while he recovered. The students of SJS packed into their usual section, right to the left of the band who was currently belting out fight-song sounding tunes to get the crowd ready for the game. The cheerleaders gathered in small bunches, some applying liberal coats of a dark shaded lipstick, some speaking animatedly with their friends, and one or two others looking downright bored. Back in the locker room was another story.

The Coach had called the team to take a knee.

"Mt. Pelon's got a relatively young team this year, but don't think they're a bunch of push-overs. Most of these guys have been chomping at the bit over in JV, and this is their year to prove themselves, so don't think they're not going to try. We've had a couple of wins, but don't let that make you overconfident. We're not winning big, we've been edging out the competition. You keep that in mind when you hit the field. They'll dig deep, you dig deeper!"

"We got these punks." Lonnie called, knuckle punching Kaz. Coach Waters tried not to smirk but threw a towel at the boys.

"Didn't I just say not to get cocky? Just get out there, and do what you've been doing. You're a tight team, to be honest, I didn't hold out a lot of hope at the beginning of the season, but now? You guys are a machine!"

"Steam engine!" Briggs threw in, sparking a string of "STEAM!" calls from anyone who'd played the Panthers last year.

"Damn right, so you go out there, you give me two-twelve, and we'll show them some steam. This is Flyer country! Who are we?"

"FLYERS!"

"Who?"

"FLYERS!"

"What are we gonna do?"

"BEAT MT. PELON!"

"Good! Get out there!"

The home-field paper banner was held by Rooster and Thorn, while the other cheerleaders formed two lines for the team to run through onto the field. Back this week to watch from the bench was Ty Cloud, his arm still wrapped protectively in a sling to keep his collarbone in place and defuse the weight of his elbow cast while it healed. The team pushed him to the front to lead them out.

"Don't bust your other arm." Harrison joked.

"That paper's pretty tough." Aiken added. Ty responded with a smile and a one finger salute before taking a head start for the paper and heading towards the field.

"You ready for this?" Sam called over to Bryan.

"Everybody dance now!" He laughed back, doing a quick impersonation of the robot before they ran through the line, hand slapping their teammates and cheerleaders. Matt followed up the team with a series of handsprings, and the game was set to start.

FIRST QUARTER

Stephen Reed re-adjusted his mouthguard and mentally prepared for the game, the Flyers having won the toss. Bryan Baxter jogged in place a few times to warm up his muscles, while Ty Cloud waved his good arm towards the stands and asked for vocal support. The intrepid students obliged, as the marching band played a rendition of "Rock and Roll all Nite," most of the students adding in the chorus

James Florismart set the ball in motion, as Kaz caught the ball at the thirty, only to be shoved out of bounds near immediately.

"Good hands, good hands!" Reed clapped, calling the team together. "Blue Sixty-three!" He passed around to his nodding teammates.

Will McCarty snapped the ball back, Reed spun and handed the ball off to Bartel, then turned to fake a pass. Luke tucked the ball in tight, holding it close to his body as he began his dash across the field. The Paladins closed in fast, but Antoine DuBois shoulder-checked into Thomas Furman, the Paladins cornerback, clearing the way for Bartel to gain a few more yards. Bryan Baxter managed to take down Paladin Ronnie Maugris just as the boy was about to make a dive at Bartel. Flyers #33 barely crossed the midfield stripe before getting plowed into by Linebacker Chad Martel, and the Flyers were on their feet for the first down. The next two plays gained minimal yardage, the Paladins tightening their defense around the Flyers running backs, with Maugris single-handedly boxing in Bryan Baxter. Luckily, Brandon Jordan managed to get himself open at the 40, and Reed let the ball fly. It would still be a trek for the Tight End who'd been coming off a knee injury, but at least it would be a down.

The crowd cheered as Jordan caught the ball over his shoulder, beginning his sprint towards the end zone. Two Mt. Pelon guards trailed him, but they couldn’t keep up with the speedy tight end. Breaking away at the thirty, Brandon seemed to double time his sprint and ran the ball straight into the end zone, the Flyers upstretching their arms before the ref even blew the whistle to indicate the play was good. Brandon beamed at the crowd's response, handing the ball off to the ref and giving a quick wave up to the stands. The Flyer's crowd continued to cheer as Samantha Douglas' first kick sailed through the crossbars, bringing the score 7-0.

"Way to go, Sammy!" Bryan called with a smile, only to be shoved in the back by Maugris. Bryan turned to the boy with a confused expression, with Maugris giving him a "what-are-you-gonna-do-about-it" gesture in return. The Flyers #88 shrugged it off, and headed back to the sidelines.

But at the end of the quarter, the Paladins would find redemption. After a false-start penalty by the Flyers turned a fourth-and-inches near midfield into a punting situation, the Paladins marched down the field in a series of tough running plays mainly behind fullback Shane Orlando. The Flyers defense was getting frustrated. Fresh from JV, Orlando was already ranked one of the best rushers of the season, and for good reason, slippery as an eel was an understatement for the boy.

"Defense! Tighten it up!" Coach called.

"Come on Flyers, hold that line, defense defense, one more time!" The cheer squad chanted. "S-T-E-A-L, Steal it, steal it!" But Paladin Roland Knight paid them no mind, this time connecting with a short pass to receiver Oliver Bordeaux, who side stepped around Diyar Delevar to get the ball into the end zone. The extra point from sure footed Greg Ganelon evened the score as the first quarter came to an end.

Dammit! I had him!

Diyar unsnapped the chin strap to his helmet, pounding his fisted left hand into his right. "Sonuva...I HAD that mother..."

There was a smack to his helmet, and he looked over as Damien came up next to him.

"C'mon, head in the game man! Get back on the line for the kick!"

Diyar sighed in frustration, snapping his helmet back up and running to get set on the line. When the kick went up and through, he trudged off to the bench, still fuming.

"C'mon, defense...get yer heads back in the game, don't make the stupid plays!"

Thank you, coach... Diyar rolled his eyes, grabbing a water bottle from under the bench after slamming his helmet down. Please please PLEASE tell me it gets better from here...

SECOND QUARTER:

The quarter had just begun when rain started to fall in sheets, a sudden down-pour that everyone had been expecting, but with no lightning- the game would continue. Sister Mary Thomas opened her large blue and white golf umbrella and huddled any nearby students she could grab under it with her. Jules and Vis snuggled under their own umbrealla, blue/yellow and red to match his stadium blanket, and students sheilded themselves under the bleachers, umbrellas and trashbags, whatever would block the steady drops. Most of the cheer squad took shelter near the equipment trailer.

"Now THIS is some football!" Coach called, shaking the brim of his cap which was already collecting percipitation. "Cloud! Get that umbrella off my bench! Go join a knitting club!"

"I'm not supposed to get my arm wet!" He mock protested, slightly holding up his casted arm to demonstrate.

"I'm tacking fifteen laps on the minute that thing comes off!" Coach shot back.

Despite the rain, Mt. Pelon still came on strong. The Flyers offense was unable to get the ball out of their own zone for the majority of the quarter. Things got worse when one of Bill Harrison's punts fell short, traveling only 24 yards before being caught by Paladin Gary Dane. The Mt. Pelon player ran the ball deep into Flyer's territory, finally being tackled at the fifteen by Lucas Alexander.

"Blue forty-two! Blue forty-two! Hut-Hut!" Knight called out before being hiked the ball. Darweishi Brown sprang into action. Knight stepped back a few yards to buy time, noticing a gap in the defense between Cyrus Fairchild, and Charlie Miller. Tucking the ball into his mid-section, Knight zig-zagged through the two defensive linemen, being stopped on the 3 yard line as Brown ran into him like a Mac truck.

"DEFENSE!" The soggy crowd called.

Knight faded back to hand off to Shane Orlando, who gained only a yard before Singleton had knocked him back.

"Way to go, Bull Dozer! Three more! Hold 'em, Hold 'em!" Coach called.

Knight attempted a short pass into the end zone, but the fast footed Delevar managed to knock the ball down before it reached it's target. But the third time was the charm for the Paladins, when Knight himself managed to topple over Biff Hannigan, rolling into the endzone for the score. Ganelon's kick brought the score 7-14 in favor of Mt. Pelon.

Shy of two minutes to the half, the offensive line scrambled to the field. Kaz caught the punt, running the ball back through the defensive line back to shy of the fifty.

"Red Sixty-Six!" Reed called out over the rain. "Red Sixty Six!" Baxter nodded and dug his cleates into the wet ground. Get clear, go long. McCarty snapped the ball back and Baxter took off. Reed balked once before sending the ball spiraling towards Baxter. The boy stopped suddenly and cut left, around the thirty yard line, the pass landing squarely in his midsection. Bryan smiled wide as his hands closed squarely on the ball, taking a short hop on one foot, but Maugris was waiting. The second after the ball connected with Baxter he was on him, dropping his shoulder colliding with the boy's spine with the same intensity he'd use to hit a sled. Bryan closed his eyes and saw white, but he held onto the ball as both players spilled onto the ground, barely hearing the ref's whistle.

"Get used to it, little bitch." Maugis taunted, digging his elbow into Baxter's back while picking himself up. Bryan bit into his mouthguard deep, half expecting a flag on the play but saw none. He slowly got to his knees and stood back up, walking it off as quickly as he could, especially since Reed was already calling the next play.

Bryan's eyes were trained on Maugris as McCarty snapped the ball back. Reed had called for a hand-off, and whistles blew as Bryan crossed the line of scrimmage, blocking into Margris with his chest.

"Smooth move." The boy mocked, stepping in close while spitting out his mouthguard. Trickles of spit hit Bryan's face, but McCarty stepped in between, pushing Baxter back to his own line.

"What the hell is that?" Coach called out from the side. The Flyers were called with a 5 yard Ineligible receiver down field penalty, moving them back to the 36 yard line. Douglas was called in for the kick, but with the extra distance, the rain and the increasing wind, the kick fell both wide and short as the clock ran down.

Who knew October could get so damn cold so quickly?

Tony huddled alone on the aluminum bleachers, and even with the hat, scarf, and gloves, the damp air blew through him like they were nothing. No one else in the crowd seemed nearly as bothered by the weather. He nearly thought the ice girls were wearing T-shirts just to spite him.

But when the extra point was good, he cheered louder than any of them.

Then it started to rain.

HALFTIME:

Most of the crowd not wise enough to bring their own umbrellas took half time to sprint back to the dorms or their cars to retrieve them, the regular half-time festivities called off due to the rain. The marching band protected their brass, woodwinds and percussion with plastic coverings, appropriately playing "Singing In the Rain" and "Raindrops keep falling on my head" for the crowd's amusement. Back inside the locker room, things were just as stormy.

Bryan still seethed in the locker room, despite a few of his teammates attempts telling him to shrug it off. Most were more concerned with Coach Jeff Waters who sat on one of the benches off to himself, making faces as he scrawled across his clipboard, looking lost in thought. The din in the locker room died down until all eyes were on Coach Waters. After what seemed like an eternity, he wrung out his ball cap and finally 'snapped back' to the team.

"Oh." He said in a sarcastic tone. "I'm sorry. I'm just waiting for my team to get here." He looked around at each of them individually. "You know, the team that I spoke to about an hour ago, before that clusterbomb on the field took place. MY team. You? I don't know who the hell you people are, because MY team sure as hell doesn't play that sloppy. Baxter! You took a good hit, so what? You go after the guy and cost us five yards? Stephen, you're throwing like my grandmother on a bad day. Offense, did you leave your drive at home? I'm seeing a lot of nothing!" Both Baxter and Jordan looked crestfallen. "Defense, you're leaving holes big enough for Cadilac Escalades to drive through!" Singleton gritted his teeth. "You guys are hanging on by your fingertips, and I'm no psychic, but I see this game going down the toilet in the second half unless you all decide to stop it. Just know this, if you're content to let that happen, let me know, because I have laundry I could be home doing. Tighten it up, people. Find your groove or find your locker, it's your choice."

Jessica was sitting on the bench as the teams left the field for half-time, her mouth turned down in a scowl at the weather. It was one thing when she could make it rain, or even make it NOT rain...

I feel so...naked...

She blinked her eyes and rubbed her face, trying to get the excess water off her. Her hair was getting plastered to her head. She pulled newly bleached strands of hair backwards over the top of her head to get them out of her face, the extra-large jersey she wore getting heavier and heavier.

"C'mon, Flyers! Y'all can do it!" she shouted as the teams ran off to the locker rooms.

James sighed as he pulled his hood over his head, his headphones weren't that easily fried by water, thankfully. "Can't we do somethin' 'bout this?" James asked.

"James, the first thing you need to learn, let things take about their course." James heard and sighed, it was one thing he didn't like about his power, rules.

"Come on Flye's! Take 'em down!" James yelled from the stands as the team went to the locker rooms.

After Luke inspected his various bruises, he looked to the Offensive line. Every one of them looked so disappointed, or defeated. F@#$in' girls.

He gave himself a little warm up jog-in-place and was ready to re-enter the field.

(Luke totally caused the lightning.)
Luke: "Hey, I've got some standards for girls."
Franky: "What, two legs?"
Luke: "Nah, two nice legs."

THIRD QUARTER:

Finally, the (absolutely 100% naturally occurring) lightning ended, and the teams were allowed out of the locker room.

The team took Coach Waters words to heart, finding their groove and reeling the game in. On the Paladin’s first play after taking the kick-off, halfback Shane Orlando took a wide pass behind the line of scrimmage and made a break for open field. Filling in for Cloud having played Cornerback for the Panthers, Singleton swooped in and hit hard, managing to knock the ball free before the running back hit the ground. The crowd jumped to their feet as a sea of blue and black and silver and white converged on the loose ball. The officials whistled the play dead, rushing in to sort things out. One by one, bodies removed themselves from the pile until the huddled form of Diyar Delevar was uncovered in full possession of the prize. He stood up triumphantly holding the ball above his head, and the Flyers crowd cheered wildly as their offense lined up just twenty-two yards away from a touchdown.

Reed handed the ball off to Antonie Dubois, who managed to drive it just short of the first down. Baxter gritted his teeth between his mouthguard and endured the taunting of Maugris as the Paladin continued to box him in.

"C'mon, freak! Show me what you got!"

Twice the Flyers attempted to bull through the defense for that last few yards, but both times they were stopped hard. The crowd screamed for a fourth down gamble, but Coach Waters played it safe and sent Douglas back to the field for a short, easy kick, bringing the score 10-14.

Neither team made any more offensive noise until late in the quarter. A Harrison punt fell short and the Paladin’s Gary Dane received the ball on his own 40 yard line, running it back 30 yards before being forced out of bounds by Singleton. That was about as close as the visitors would get to the end zone, however. Three more plays gave them less than five yards, and Ganelon was called into the field.

The crowd chanted "Block that kick!" but the ball still sailed through the crossbars bringing the score 10-17 in favor of the Paladins.

FOURTH QUARTER

The Paladin's defense was still unstoppable, and after three plays, St. Joe’s was forced to punt. Darweishi Brown was strangly calm, even though he hated the Coach's harsh words, hated losing in general. Still, he was determined to stay focused for the last quarter of the game. The large outside linebacker took a deep breath and centered himself as the ball was handed back to the quarterback, and the large teen sprang into motion. Knight faded back looking for a man open, but his receivers were being well fenced in. He had begun to fire off a pass to Bordeaux when Brown struck, a split second too late. The ball warbled out of Knights hands, only to be snagged mid-air by Orlando. The running back seized the opportunity, spinning to avoid Singleton and jetted up along the sidelines all the way to the Flyers 27 yard line, where Brown finally knocked him out of bounds, taking a moment to wave up to Jessica St. Peters in the stands. The St. Joes defense managed to keep them out of the end zone, and luckily, place kicker Greg Ganelon misjudged the weather conditions slightly, the ball falling short of the uprights, keeping the score 10-17 in favor of Mt. Pelon.

As the night wore on, the temperature dropped slightly, leaving the crowd cold and wet but hopeful for the hometeam. Sam looked into the stands and could see Aura bundled up sitting next to Ves, who despite the weather was still rooting her hardest. Sister Mary Thomas' blue and white pom pom on a stick sagged in the rain, but still they cheered. Tony Kite looked miserable, but still managed a smile when she caught his eye. And was that James wearing headphones? She briefly wondered if it was possible for him to electrocute himself. Brushing the thought aside, she watched as the Flyer’s offense headed back onto the field.

The crowd started a chant to rally the team back to victory.

"S-J-S! S-J-S!" Artie Hadrian whistled using his two fingers in the corners of his mouth.

As if feeding off the rally, Reed connected on a 32 yard pass to Bryan Baxter, bringing the ball to just inside Paladin territory. Baxter held out an arm anticipating the hit from Maugris, only to be blind-sided by a good hit from Thomas Furman. Maugris chucked as he 'accidently' kicked mud towards the facemask of the boy lying on the ground, but once again Will McCarty stepped in before Baxter could retaliate.

"You got nothing, freak!" The boy called, spitting on the ground.

"Take it out in game." Reed advised him, patting the receiver on the helmet, and dragging him back to the line.

With now just under a minute left to play, Reed called his last attempt. As soon as the ball was snapped back, he handed it off to Dubois, who dropped his shoulder, and drove into the end zone, bringing the score 16-17. The Coach pulled Douglas aside, saying something that made the girl nod before running onto the field, repeating it to Reed.

"Red 19! Red 19!" Reed called out.

The Saint Joseph’s band started to play the Flyers Fight Song, the students again joining in while "GO FLYERS!" could be heard from the remaining crowd. The cheerleaders, no longer concerned with stringy hair and runny make-up took the field again to root the team on, calling "SCORE TWO MORE!"

The ball was set back, and Reed took the snap. As Douglas wound up for the kick, he handed the ball off to Luke Bartel. Bartel spun back to avoid Chad Martel, running laterally down the field to avoid contact. Finally, he found the chink in the Paladin's armor, and slid head first into the end zone, sliding along the slick grass, to give the Flyers the extra two points.

Knight hurried his offensive team to the line, but with less than twenty seconds on the clock, SJS held them off and came out on top.

Jessica [St. Peter!] was on her feet, screaming and waving back at Dar after his play, her face plastered with a wide smile.

As the minutes ticked off the clock, she stayed on her feet, the foul weather not doing much to damper her high spirits, until the game finally ended.

"AH!! Sam didn't kick the ball?! They can do that?! WOO!!

"Go Flyers!!!"
