Book Restoration Detail: Special Detention

Post by Kris O'Sullivan »

As Kris cleaned one of the plethora of books, she discovered that it was a book on medical and mental disorder, dating from the 1960's, and takes a peek. The warped and stiff pages reveal the work of a Doctor Lawrence Tate, and his work in Central America, during the Cold War, upon the psychologies of the paranormal, who were afflicted with all manners of maladies from shell shock to depression. One of the illnesses reveals something of interest to the young empath.

"Kali," she asked. "Have you ever heard of Grier's Syndrome? After I get done with this stuff, today, I'm going to see if the sister will let me check this out."

The two girls sit cleaning the books.

"Kali," Kris asked. "Have you ever heard of Grier's Syndrome? After I get done with this stuff, today, I'm going to see if the sister will let me check this out."

" No I haven't heard of it.... whats it about? Kali replies as she watches Kris carefully look thru the book.

Kali is thumbing thru the pages of an ancient old book titled

"It's an empathic disease. Non-contagious," she said reading, her eyes widening in abject horror. "The empath loses their ability to filter out the emotions of others, until they become an emotional sponge, unable to rid themselves of the emotions they soak up. Most of this doctor's patients either went insane, or died."

Kris swallowed, and closed the book. She hoped she never developed anything like that. Looking at Kali, she hoped none of her friends who were empaths contracted it either. She tried her best to not be terrified, but just couldn't shake it.

As Kali listens to Kris's explanation the smile on her face is suddenly gone , replaced bya look of uneasyness.

" umm... wow , thats really ummm... scarey" she says. In the back of her mind she worries , with all the emotional ups and downs shes been tryin to get a grip on just the idea scares her..

She quickly pastes the smile back on and tells Kris " Lets see what other odd books are here. I bet theres some wild stuff hidden away"

"What's yours about," Kris asked, offering a smile.

She felt so bad, now. It wasn't what she expected, nor was it what she wanted to scare anyone with. Her bout with mental illness was already bad enough, as it was. Not that she would ever let on.

"Surely it's something cool?"

Happy the subject has changed Kali pushes the book toward Kris .
" Well ... Ummm its a whole lot of love spells and black magic stuff from what I can see. Im really surprised Sister Salvation left it in this stack. Then again neither of us know magic so she prolly figured it was safe" Kali tells the other girl.
" you think anyone here ever used these? " she continues as she shows Kris more of the startling illustrations.

"Maybe someone like Franky might browse them. But, I doubt she would actually practice it. Kinda cheating at life, ya know," Kris nodded as she opened the book, and was immediately riveted by the illustrations. "Oh dear Lord! Is that what I think it is?"

Kali blushes "... well ummm I think maybe so.... How do you think they ever even got the idea to draw this?? I mean I guess I kinda know where people ideas like this... well not exactly like this.. but umm well...." she stammers and suddenly turns the page , The heading on this page reads
Chapter 16

Mystic Philosophy of Copulation Through the Ages

" ooooookkkkkk...... time for a new book to look thru!" Kali says with a giggle as she slides that book over and picks up another entitled

The BOOK OF THE DEAD
E.A. Wallis Budge copyright 1895
These texts and invocations were meant to be used by the deceased in overcoming the obstacles that were to be encountered in the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that after death the magic powers of the right words- contained in various book of the dead texts- would help them on their journey through the underworld. The Papyrus of Ani contains spells for opening doors and assuming the forms of animals. Sir Wallis Budge, who prepared this translation of the Papyrus of Ani, was Keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum a century ago. His exhaustive study of Egyptian magic, religion

As she reads the first Paragraph she mumbles ... " wow too bad I wasnt a witch some of this is interesting "

"Wow," Kris said, nodding. "I bet that had some very good uses, all in all. I had thought about it, once, but if I were to become a witch, it would require my mom to have not been devoutly Catholic. Everyone in my family was. She said something about one of my ancestors having been an inquisitor. Creepy, really."

She considered the books, and reached for another from her own stack. There had to something interesting in hers that wasn't scary in an outbreak sort of way. A rather new looking book grabbed her attention. It seemed to only have minor water damage.

Alchemy And The Metahuman: A Study In Arcane Techniques Applied To Modern Mutants
Paragon Press, 1986
SERAPH,GIFT, and MAGI corroborate to explain the mysteries of mutants who augment themselves with magical items, or mystic chemistry. Often with spectacular results, many heroes through the ages may have been such people. Doctor Neonis Korbin and Professor Proton, in conjunction with Brother Harbinger, delve into mysteries that have sparked controversial revival in the acquiring of mystic knowledge and items long thought unknown in origin, from various locations from around the globe.

"Wow! Check this out, Kali! This looks cool," Kris exclaimed as she slid the thick book to her friend.

"Nifty! Check this out!

Taking the newer book from Kris , Kali starts to read. The book is interesting sure enough.
" Hey umm Kris.... you're alot better with stuff like this then I am. I never was very book smart" Kali blushes as she admits her fault. "Maybe if Salvation will let me check it out later you can look through it with me and explain what parts I dont understand?" she asks timidly.

She carefully sits the large book to the side and grabs another book. The cover to this one is so covered in mold and dirt its not readable. As she wipes away the dirt and grime carefully , a grubworm pokes its blind face from the side of the binding. Startled Kali drops the book with a yelp.
" EEEEEWWWWWWW !!!!!!" after the initial shock she starts to giggle.

"Sure, Kali! I'd love that! It's rare anyone ever asks me for help, where I can help the most," she beamed. "Anytime tou want, just call me, and either I can come over to your quad, or you to mine. Or, if you want away from school, you can come to my mom's place. She's a fabulous cook!"

Kris had grabbed a few smaller books, and was looking the relatively unscathed books over, when the yelp and THUMP startled her to yelp as well. When Kali turned out to be just grossed out by a grub, Kris could n't help but laugh. reaching over with tweezers, she picked the larva from the book, and put it inside the container that was ultimately bound for science class.

"Gross little buggers, huh?"

Both girls are laughing now about the grub as Kris places it into the small container.
Kali continues scanning through the books as she carefully cleans each one in her stack.
There is no clock in the room , and Kali isnt wearing a watch. Unfortunatly she never has been able to wear one and keep it working properly.
Pushing the last of the few books stacked in front of her she lays her head atop her crossed arms and watches as Kris finnishes the book in her hand.

"I wonder if she wants them all done," Kris asked, before looking over to Kali. "Oh. You must be bushed, huh? Sorry. I really do love this stuff. I can't decide if I want to be a geneticist, or a librarian. Funny, huh?"

Salvation pokes her head down the staircase and shouts down to them, "Its almost 8am. Don't you ladies have classes to be at?"

She grinned and sniffed loudly. The dank stink of the dungeon cellar had to have sunk in by now.

"You better go now or you'll be late!" She vanished from the opening with only the dull click of her heels on the floor to announce her departure.

6:00am the next morning...

Kris strolled into the library, with a cheerful face, tee-shirt, and jeans, with a couple of bags from a local coffee shop, and three large ceramic mugs filled with gourmet brew. She walked over to the counter, and set up three equal portions for herself, Kali, and Sister Salvation. This morning there would be breakfast, along with gourmet coffee brewed in Lycia's coffee maker. Looking around Kris figured she should announce herself to Sister Salvation.

"Sister," she sang out cheerfully. "I brought good coffee and actual breakfast! I came to finish restoring the books!"
