There are only a very limited number of ways that the Student Council or Student Body President can punish a member of the SJS Community. Because we are a largely anonymous organization, and none of us have any power to affect in-game experiences, actually regulating behavior or roleplay is difficult at best.
Our three chief methods of handling discipline are Censure, Demotion, and Explusion.
For all but the most minor offenses, all disciplinary action may be described on the forums in the Student Council digest. While we try to respect the privacy of our members, and these announcements are not meant to embarrass the offender, most offenses cause anger and resentment within the community. These announcements are for the benefit of the community as a whole, to ensure that SJS members know that the offense has been recognized and that action was taken.
Censure
Violations of a minor or modest nature may warrant official reprimand without necessitating further or more severe action. This will commonly be done through private messages on the forums, though in-game reprimands are not unheard of, in an attempt to deal with problems on the fly as they arise. Students who ignore censure and continue to cause disruptions or ignore rules will almost certainly be demoted or expelled.
Demotion
Certain conduct violations can warrant a demotion. Demotions can be either permanent or temporary, depending on the severity of the infraction and any mitigating circumstances. Demotions are often made on the spot and can be petitioned at the next Office Hours. As it is not possible to demote a student when they are offline, the circumstance may arise when a demotion is necessary and cannot be given. A student who is offline when a demotion must be made is given written notification via in-game email. The student is expected to reply within 72 hours to arrange a meeting to accept demotion. If a student attempts to avoid a demotion by logging out or restricting their playtimes to times when no member of the Student Council is available, that student risks expulsion.
Expulsion
If a student is expelled, the student will be given written notification via in-game email. Depending upon the reason for the expulsion, the student may or may not be eligible to rejoin the coalition at a later date. Under normal circumstances, only the student in violation is expelled. However, in severe conduct cases, all of a player’s characters may be expelled and the player may be prohibited from ever rejoining the supergroup with any character. Any student who is expelled for any reason and later rejoins the coalition loses their previous rank, if any. In special cases, an expelled student’s rank may be restored at Office Hours.
