Johnny, in the Library with the Rope...

Post by Johnny Dangerous »

It's the early afternoon and classes are out for the day; at least for those that don't have detention. Johnny Dangerous hits the schooll library and takes over a table, furiously going back and forth between it and the book racks.

After about half an hour he has quite the stack going and sits down, oblivious to anyone else present - clearly intent upon his studies.

"Oh, that's just totally gross!" he says out loud to no one in particular as he peruses one musty tome. A stern look from Sister Salvation quiets him quickly.

It's at this moment that Sapphire Angel glides in low up to the table opposite JD. As she barely pops up over the top of the book he's intent upon, Johnny jumps back in his seat, startled by her sudden appearance.

"Uh, hey Sapph," he whispers as he glances at the clock on the wall.

Angel looks to Johnny, as she walks up on him.

"What's totally gross? What'd you find out? Anything that I haven't already discovered?"

She looks at him, hoping for something new. If only she could tell the other kids at the school what's going on with her. She's glad, though, that she can at least get the help of Johnny, even though she had to tell him the truth.

"Nope, nothing yet," he replies with a frustrated look. "But I've only just started."

He turns the open tome to her so that she can see the picture displayed on its pages. It's a picture of a cadaver with the top half of its head missing.

Grimacing once more at the image, he looks up to see Angelique smiling at him.

"What?"

Grimacing once more at the image, Johnny looks up to see Angelique smiling at him.

"What?" he says.

Angel just shakes her head, smiling.

"It's nothing really. I'm just glad that you're willing to help us all out with this. I really want this to work. I want us all to have a normal life again. And by you taking on this project and understanding, even if it's only a tiny bit of what has happened to me and the others, it shows me that I can trust some people with the secret. Hopefully, we'll find a way to reverse everything and then no one will ever have to know what happened in the first place."

She makes a noise and action, as if sighing then looks more in depth to the tome that Johnny turned for her to look at.

"It mostly folk stories. Maybe we could find something more to the actual facts behind the reasoning and not the end results for handling the problem. I'm rather attached to my head, thank you."

Angel chuckles a bit and pushes the book back to Johnny.

"Well," he whispers, shrugging, "I have to start somewhere. How am I to tell the difference between a fairy tale and the real thing? Besides, you never know where you'll dig up the truth."

Sapphire Angel considers this a moment and then reluctantly nods her head.

With a sad smile, Johnny continues, "You know, I couldn't just stand by and do nothing with the three of you in trouble! And if that means that I get in trouble... well, that's the price of friendship I guess. I just wish that I had time to help Kris with her problem, too!"

Straining to pick up a rather large and old book, he shows the cover to Angel before putting it back down with a loud thump! Making a grimace by way of apology in Sister Salvation's direction, he opens it to the first page.

Angel winces at the thud, then looks over to Sister Salvation, as she lowers her head and mouths the word oops. She looks back to Johnny, worried.

"I still need to talk to Kris, too. She needs to get to Dr. Green before we lose her. I just hope that she hasn't found out in the wrong way."

She looks over to the pile of books on the table, shaking her head. She reaches for one and opens it up, while scooting around to sit next to Johnny. She skims over the words, frowning , then slightly chuckling.

"Oh, this is obviously not true. I've proven that one by just being here. I have a normal sleeping schedule just like everyone else. I'm still able to make it to school"

She flips the page to a picture of what looks like an old wood carving, drawn out. She scoffs at it, rolling her eyes.

"People fear what they don't understand. They called them monsters. Maybe some of them were... maybe some of them just wanted to be left alone. It's all about survival... and it sucks."

Johnny frowns, both at what was said about Kris and the unfortunate pun.

"What do you mean you hope that she hasn't found out in the 'wrong way'?"

"Siren was at Pocketr D, spying on Karl and Nieves, when I walked up to talk to them. We were discussing Kris' condition and she blew things way out of proportion. I just hope that Siren didn't twist the truth, like she was doing that night, calling me evil and crap... just because I was talking to Karl and Nieves..."

She looks down and to the book once more, wondering what's going to happen once the procedure has taken effect.

"Hey," he says trepidaciously as he gets her attention, "I told Kris. I ran into her last night and I couldn't believe that no one else had told her!"

"She's in a lot of pain."

"You told her? Hmm.. I was hoping to get to her before everyone else. I better get outta here, then. I'm gonna go try to find her and talk to her. I'll catch up with you later, Johnny"

And with that, Angelique closes the book in front of her, smiling half-hearted and concerned, then walks out of the library.

"So that's it then, huh?" Came a sly purr from above.

Johnny, startled, looked up. Perched atop the high shelf of books, the cat peered down at him, a mixture of curiousity and mild irritation on her face. Johnny adjusted the glasses on his nose. He started to speak, but then just shook his head and looked back down at the musty tome.

The cat vaulted from the bookshelf and landed with barely a sound. "Don't $#%@& ignore me, bookworm," she growled. "Angelique's a %#$@$ vampire?"

"It's really none of your business," Johnny said, his voice as even as he could manage.

"Screw that," said the cat, her small form coming closer. She hopped up to sit on the table next to Johnny, her feet dangling. "That bloodsucker is my damned roommate."

Johnny looked up and met the cat's luminous eyes. "I didn't know that."

The cat waved a hand dismissively. "Whatever. Now tell me what the %$#& is going on."

Walking over, Sister Salvation gives both of the students a stern look.

"Johnny, you've been warned, but you, Miss Pussycat, should know better! Both of you keep your voices down or you'll be spending all of your free time for the next month with me."

Nodding as the nun goes back to her desk, Johnny turns to the felinoid on the table.

"Look," he whispers, "I made her a promise that I'm not breaking. You're going to have to talk to her to get your answers."

Maybe it was because Faster didn't seem to be in anywhere near a level-headed disposition, but Johnny did the only thing that he could think to do.

Shooting his arms out around the two closest stacks of books, his teleport is accompanied by a green flash and a sharp clap caused by air rushing in to fill the space where he was just a moment ago.

He thought to himself that he'd probably overreacted because he just didn't know the cat all that well. There'd be hell to pay for it later if he was any judge of character.

Hopefully he'd grabbed the right tomes. And who the hell was she calling, bookworm, anyway?! Disgruntled yet determined, Johnny sat down underneath the legs of the statue in the park that Sapph seemed to like.

If he didn't manage to find a lead in these pages he was going to have to take a more direct approach; a thought that he did not relish.

Conclusion?

Post by Johnny Dangerous »

Days pass and Johnny skips school and other social arrangements. He moves around quite a bit and stays invisible in order to avoid others. Many days pass without sleep.

Modafinil works wonders. Yet the few promising leads that he uncovers are dead ends. Johnny grows more desperate, and his lack of sleep, despite the drugs, begins to take its toll.

He's convinced that someone or something is preventing him from finding the cure. Sapph and Kali's lives hang in the balance! Det's, too.

"I will not fail!"

And in the end he has to concede that he's getting nowhere while the clock is still ticking. He wants to help Kris, but he doesn't have the time to do both. He wants to tell Amy, but he knows that she hates Angel and he's worried what it will do to their new relationship. He's only just 16, and it shows.

That f'ing Karl! He's no help at all. Science and magic combined to cure a vampire... BS! Johnny knows that there's a magical cure to it... but somehow he just can't find it.

He hits his low when he forces a small coven of the Circle to beat each other unconscious. Unbelievably - and perhaps because of his quite necessary state of self-control - he stops short of mentally husking the last Thorny standing, who is held in mental domination. He lets it go and teleports away, having gained no information whatsoever from them.

That's it. I have to find her!

Paragon City, Atlas Park, M.A.G.I. headquarters -- "Azuria, please! I've done a lot for you. I'll owe you big time, just get your friend across the hall to mod my comm. There's someone that's gone missing and I need to find her. It's life and death!"

Cool, at least one thing this week went his way.

Now, what did that engineer say? Activate the comm just so. Something about working like sonar, pinging the target, but that it wouldn't work normally while it was in tracking mode? Whatever.

"Hi, all," he said over the comm, tired and without any enthusiasm.

"JD! Where you been, man?" "Johnny!" "Yo, Jonboy."

"Hey guys. Been busy with stuff," is all that he replied before switching his comm unit to its newly hacked functionality.

There are advantages to teleporting. The main one is that you get around places quicker than almost anyone else, and they can't see you coming.

So he methodically visits each section of the city, hoping against hope that she has her comm, and it's on, unlike the other night when she "accidentally" left it in the quad next to the sleeping she-cat.

Steel Canyon, Galaxy, Kings Row, Pocket D, Skyway, Talos - nothing!

Wait... there's a return ping in Founders' Falls. He teleports better than the distance of a football field in one direction, and the feedback seems to get stronger. Another direction and it gets weaker.

Think, Johnny... right! Triangulation!

ping............ ping...... ping... ping.. ping, ping, ping.

He clicks the comm back to normal mode.

Johnny's been invis near Sapph before and she can always seem to sense him. He thinks it's a combo of her heightened sense of smell, and some other mental power of hers. He's not sure, but he's going to come in downwind of her with his mind masked as well as he can.

They're right out in front of the medical center, when he hears, "I don't know, Vox. It just started making weird noises. I was listening in on them, but I've turned it off now."

"Okay...," is all that Sapphire Angel's companion replies with in a tone that's clearly unsure.

"Wait... I sense something." Angelique concentrates and begins turning in place.

Damn, the gig's up. She can still detect me.

"Johnny! What are you doing here?" Sapphire Angel says, as he uncloaks in front of the duo. The young man named Vox takes a step back. Johnny's so strung out that he can barely concentrate, but something about the other male strikes him as familiar.

"I could ask you the same thing, Sapph. You skipped out on me almost a week ago. I've been trying to find the cure."

It's then that Johnny first really notices the changes to Angel. It's not the clothes - he's seen this particularly risque outfit on her before, and he'd blush if he weren't only semi-conscious - but rather the change in the hair color, the sunken, dark eyes and the pallid, deathly skin.

"Angel, are you ok?"

The conversation wanders to various places. Johnny relates that he's convinced that someone is fouling his research. Angelique chuckles and makes thinly veiled sexual and vampiric-related innuendos at things that are said.

Johnny begins to fade, stumbling in place. He blows off radiation in a healing form, as he always does in an attempt to maintain safety. Except this time some of it isn't in healing form.

"You look like you could use some rest," Vox says with an English accent, taking a step back.

"Johnny, hold it together," Sapphire Angel says, just beginning to realize how strung out he truly is. The radiation wasn't strong enough to do any damage, but that doesn't mean she likes it.

A moment passes and then another burst of energy radiates out from him, followed rapidly by several more.

"Johnny, NO!!!" She screams, as her arms reflexively come up to shield her face.

"RUN!!!" he manages as he looks straight up into the skies above. A loud clap resounds at ground level, as the air rushes in to fill the spot where Johnny was standing just a split second before. Another port, and then another, straight up into the sky... as far away as he can manage to get. And then the air becomes rarified. He blacks out for a moment, and then comes to. His powers are out of control, the magical family curse that he inheritted from his father taking over.

With each 'port there's another explosion. He's damaging buildings that he appears too close to, but at least he's not near the ground... near the people. One final teleport miraculously places him above where he started, and takes the last of the energy in his body with it. At the same instant, Sapphire Angel attempts to use her new powers to contact his mind. There's a sort-of mental 'snap' and he plummets to the ground from several hundred feet up, landing with a loud thump in front of Vampire Angel and Vox.

Her eyes go wide! NO!! A fragment of her humanity asserts itself. Not this boy who she's come to think of as a little brother! He's naive and means well, and has only tried to help. To save her life, he thinks, and Kali and Detective's.

She lets loose with all of the healing that she can muster. "You..," One wave after another. "Will..." All targeted on the dying boy's broken form. "Not..." There... some bones mended. "Die..." And now some arteries and soft tissue. "On..." But there's something wrong with his mind. "Me!!"

Sapphire Angel falls to her knees as Vox comes up and places a hand on her shoulder. "Angel, no, you're exhausting yourself."

But Sapphire Angel does not reply. She cannot for she is no longer in control of herself as her body rises from the ground, transforming and sprouting beautiful wings. She is radiance personified. A Guardian Angel has taken her, as has happened before when she is utterly drained, physically and emotionally.

"WHAT HAS HAPPENED HERE?" Angel turns on Vox, "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HER, DARK ONE?"

"...amy?..." Johnny barely breathes as he convulses in unconscious agony on the ground.

"Me? It was that other. He could not accept the truth. Accept that he failed. Only I can save My Angel!" Vox backs away from the floating form that has descended upon him.

"...my..."

"YOU THERE," Angel turns on the unconscious and delirious Johnny. "WHAT DID YOU DO?" The only reply she/it gets from the incoherent boy is, "...Kar..."

As Angelique DuBois's body turns back round on Vox, several unmarked black vans surround the square in front of the medical center, keeping back to a safe distance.

"..amy?..."
"....mom?..."

Vox fades into nothingness. The Angel turns once more to the writhing boy on the ground.

"Miss Angel, please step away from him. We'll take it from here." Comes a voice from a man dressed in a black suit, with matching black sunglasses. Several occupants have stepped out of the various vans, including a few who are obviously medical practicioners of some sort based upon the stretcher and other equipment they have at hand. None of them move forward, however.

"YOU WILL NOT TAKE THIS BOY!"

"...Ameth..."

The sounds of energy weapons powering up from the distance and above is unmistakable.

"Please, Angel, do not make me ask again. We're the boy's legal guardians. We know how to handle him and his special situation. He's still very dangerous!"

"...amy.i.."

"WHERE WILL YOU TAKE HIM?" the Angel queries, demonstrably untrusting of these identically garbed men and their motivations.

The man who is in charge replies, "We have a facility on the outskirts of the city, safely away from any populated regions. I'm afraid that's all that I can say." He looks at several of the other agents nearby, on edge and getting ready to call the shot.

"JOHNNY," the Angel floats in close to him on the ground. "FOCUS ON AMY!"

The guardian angel touches his mind and it all falls back into place. Johnny's head shoots up as his eyes, full of green energy and terror, snap open. With a woosh and a clap, he's gone.

The men in black scatter back to their vehicles and hurriedly head in all different directions. The pursuit is on.

....

Amethyst Shade sits alone in the quad, studying. It helps take her mind off of her missing boyfriend. Maybe the romantic picnic on Talos for his 16th was too much? Johnny was certainly a shy one.

*CLAP!* As if in answer to her thoughts, he appears on the floor next to her bed. He's barely able to prop himself up as he looks into her eyes, the green radiation fading from them to be replaced by tears.

"Amy," he weakly implores. "We have to go ... we have to run. They're after me."

She doesn't understand, but at that moment she doesn't have to. The boy that she loves more than anything else in the world has just said that they have to go and she believes him to the core of her being.

"I think I know a place we can go for a while," she replies, taking him into her arms, all forgiven for now.

....

Somewhere a dark figure smiles to himself. He's patient. He's waited a very long time. The boy thinks that he can have her. So does the Other.

But HE knows the truth, knows that she's destined to be his throughout eternity, once more and again, until the Sun no longer burns down from the heavens.
