*Whir, whir, whir, Ker-click, Fwoomp*
The baseball screamed through the air like an artillery round. Well, in Paula's mind it did. Cocking her arms back as the white blur hurtled toward her, she calculated where it was going to be. Where the bat was going to be. Where the two would intersect.
*CRACK*
The ball soared and flew away, as the wooden bat reverberated solidly in the latin girl's hands. In her mind's eye, there were cheers and chants, and bands played their festive tunes, as she ran the bases of the diamond, the opposing teams' players heads hung low in defeat. To all who stood and watched the girl stood for a dreamy moment before...
*THOOMP*
Pally shook her head, and blinked a few times, looking down at the destroyed remnants of the baseball that had just struck her in the forehead. It was odd that it didn't hurt, yet still jangled her senses just slightly. Looking back to the little cannon, she remembered that it was going to pitch another ball, shortly. She had to practice. She had to show the coach there was enough interest for a baseball team to be sponsored...

She watched the pitching machine.
*FWOOMP*
Cocking back, slightly, Pally's eyes followed the ball, gauging its speed and where it was going. With a graceful, and almost prophetic arc, the bat swung around.
*KA-RACK-ACK*
The ball soared in a beautiful arc, and vanished from sight, unseen by the latina, who was more preoccupied with the now shattered bat. Near the Atlas Park Entrypoint Security Gate, several hundred yards away, a PPD officer directed traffic, and was delayed as a small piece of cork, and a scrap of white leather thumped onto his hat softly. Upon the scrap were the letters "Loui" and some stars.
"Kids," he muttered as he shook his head and went back to his directing of traffic.
Back at the park, Palilla stared at the bat, disappointed. This meant an earl end to her practice. But, on the same token, she could now go shopping, and buy an entire baseball uniform, then go check in with Nissa. Maybe something had changed, and there would be good news. Maybe she would catch Kearan, and make him a past tense problem...

"What's this?" Tristaan had been walking around campus trying to get a better feel for his new home when he'd seen it stashed near one of the sports fields. "A pitching machine..." It was small, old, and beaten up, but it looked like it would still throw a ball. "I didn't know Saint Joe's had a baseball team. Been a few years... wonder if I can still hit a ball." A quick search turned up a bat and some balls, and moments later Tristaan brought the machine to life.
*whir, whir, whir, ker-click, fwoop!*
Tristaan watched the ball fly at him, readied himself, and...
*whoosh*
Missed. "Guess it's been longer than I thought." Tristaan readied himself for the next ball. "Looks like I need some more practice."

Even at a distance, Palilla heard the machine's sounds. What? Was somebody else playing around with the pitcher? She could have sworn she stashed it good enough to not be seen. Trotting back she saw the new kid swing. He was just a hair slow and a bit too low. She gave him two more swings before he hit the ball. Something in her mind said he was out of practice, or a new player.
*fwoop*
His eyes trained, he tensed where he needed to, and...
*swish*
Still a tad off on timing. He had good form, though.
*fwoop*
Again, he did it all, she was totally prepared for the swish, and...
*PANK*
The aluminum bat made that familiar sound, and the ball sailed pretty well. Smiling, she clapped, and gave him an encouraging shout.

Putting a hand to his head, Tristaan winced. That was pretty stupid of him. Of course the machine wasn't going to stop spitting balls at him just because he looked away. "Yeah, I'm okay." Grinning, he added, "I've got a pretty thick skull."
*fwoop!*
The next ball sailed safely past, a few yards away. "Looks like I'm pretty badly out of practice. It's been a few years since Little League." After a brief pause, he smiled. "Thanks for getting me out of harm's way. I'm Tristaan, by the way."

"Well, I'm Palilla (pronounced pah-lee-yah). Joo played baseball," she asked. "I'm tryin' ta show da coach we got a team dat wants ta play. Interested?"
Turning to the machine, Pally walked over, at least two balls bouncing off of her, harmlessly.
"Get off me," she yelled at the machine, then turned it off. "'Course joo can call me Pally!"

Tristaan chuckled at the machine's inability to phase Pally. "Looks like that machine has met its match."
After leaning the bat up against the fence, Tristaan walked over to Pally. "Sure I'd be interested. I'm glad someone around here's interested in something other than football. How many people do we have so far?"

Laughing, Tristaan replied, "Well, it's a start at least. Any ideas on where we're going to pull the rest of the team from? I heard there's a cheer squad, maybe they'd help us recruit people." Grinning, he added, "It'd be more opportunities for them to bounce around and show school spirit, after all."
"Cheers quad, huh," Palilla asked, smiling. "Joo like da idea of all dose girls bouncing around, giggling and clapping? I guess dat's okay. We could always use someting ta distract da other teams, while dey play, huh?"
She elbowed Tristaan, and chuckled.
"C'mon, joo! Let's get sometin' ta eat, an' brainstorm!"
