Brandon stood with Reed. "Wouldn't be fair to the other guys. We should worry about Coach, guys."

He went with the crowd, quiet and concentrating. For perhaps the first time that semester, he prayed seriously. "God...let Coach be okay, okay? Um...thanks." The awkward phrase went through his mind over and over as he walked, and by the time he got to the bus it was ingrained and running in the back of his head.
We've got nothing to keep us from Startover, Georgia.
We'll leave all the baggage and start over there.

Sam reluctantly followed the team to the bus, as a few Bulldog fans filtered out as well. The 'Dogs themselves remained behind, the faculty trying to salvage what they could of the homecoming celebration.

"Be a shame to win by forfeit on homecoming." One said to the other.

"We were pounding them anyway." His friend said with a shrug. "Maybe they should've finished it out."

"Are you kidding? That's St. Joseph's, Freak High. They'd go all mutant. Their coach is the only thing that keeps them from shooting lasers out of their eyes and things on the field. He makes them normal or something, he's like a sponge or something. Sucks up all their freakiness. "

"Not all of it. " His friend chided. "Did you get a look at some of those fans?"

Kara stared at the two, focusing her best cold, deadly glare on them until they looked away. She sighed at herself; her reaction was not helping, most likely. But it was either that or make them think that they were chickens for the rest of the night. She packed her things up and followed everyone else.

As Stephen spoke to the team, Bri instinctively found herself at his elbow. No mater what had passed between them, they were friends. And Stephen looked like he could use a friend right then. She lightly touched his arm, nodding sympathicly as he turned to board the bus. She grabbed what few personal items she had brought with her to the field and followed the somber river of blue and white.

A few students milled around the hospital, or clung to their cell phones awaiting word. They were few, but comforting for the time being.

"He's awake, stable, and really ticked off that we might have to forfeit. He'll be staying overnight for observation."

God damn, the mood had been sulky yesterday. Even #^%%ing Bri had looked depressed. It was infectious; Elly couldn't work up the will to go to the D after, even though she barely knew the coach. You weren't supposed to have strokes or whatever the hell the coach had here in Paragon. Heads blown off by robot-mounted laser cannons, sure...

Her alarm went off. She was due on patrol in 15 minutes. She dragged her attention off the ceiling and started to roll out of bed.

In her mind, she saw the coach topple over again. This image was followed by her likeness vaporized by a Rikti battleship and she was dead and she was dead and she was...

About two hours later someone at MAGI noticed she wasn't in Princess form and "helpfully" activated her bracers for her. It didn't matter to Elly; she didn't budge from her bed for the rest of the day.
